Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
I updated the first post per Trevor's modifications. I wasn't really sure what to do about suggesting soundtrack albums. Let me know how you'd like that worded so it's clear that it's not obligatory in any way.

Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
If you get the FLIX channel, which is a free version of Cinemax or Showtime, they show a handful of Criterions every week.

I don't know if it will be of much use to anyone but me, but I updated my post on the first page with what I think is a complete list of all 140 Criterion titles that are currently exclusive to Hulu.

Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
Incidentally, you can add the ICheckMovies.com Criterion widget to your list pretty simply. It just tracks how many of the Criterion titles you've checked vs. the current count (675 at the moment). http://www.icheckmovies.com/profile/widgets/

We should change the link in the checklist for the non-DVD Hulu to this post/list. Thanks again Sondheim! |
Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
First off, I botched the date for the Burt Lancaster Criterion films. It's actually tomorrow (August 25th).

"Feel free to explore soundtracks from Criterion titles and add blurbs about your listening experience within your checklists. While these shouldn't count as numbered titles on your list, it can help expand your knowledge and appreciation of a film. You might want to add this as an "extra credit" item on your checklist." Like I said, feel free to edit any of that as you see fit.

Here's their schedule for 1 September. You can change the date to look ahead from there. I've looked through the first six days of the month and didn't see anything that I think is Criterion, but on the other hand they're showing Ernest Goes to Jail at 6:30 on the 6th, so there's that.

Maybe Eclipse will put out an "Ernest" barebones set. They could do the five theatrical releases that he had, not the last five that were straight to video (I only know this because of Wikipedia...).

Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
I can't find anything on hulu about using your facebook account to signup for a free month trial of Hulu Plus. Is that offer expired? If so, looks like I'll only have a week to use hulu plus during the challenge.

I see it right on the hulu main page under that big scrolling ad thing they have.

Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
I know most of the criterion movies are gone from Netflix streaming library, but while looking through their dvd library to add to my dvd queue for the challenge, I stumbled across a couple of them that are still available to stream. The Producers and Caesar and Cleopatra are both available to stream on Netflix and I don't see a date that they are being taken down.
|
Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
In preparation for next week, I just went to my local library and cleared them out of all their Criterions that I didn't already have. Between that and my own collection, I should have about 30-35 queued up for next week. I can't wait to rematch some Fellini classics and discover some gems from Fuller and Kurosawa that I've never seen.

MinLShaw, there are even three Eclipse titles listed. |
Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
Oh, and I just found this, too.
September 22nd is the end of the deal between Netflix and Criterion for streaming titles. |
Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
I'm in for this challenge. Still have a couple eclipse set from the last sale that I haven't dove into yet, and I've been meaning to rewatch some of the films I have in my collection.

September 22nd is the end of the deal between Netflix and Criterion for streaming titles. [Update 8/27/10 - I went back to InstantWatcher.com to check on the status of upcoming expiring Criterion films, and it appears that this entire list has disappeared from their listings. I checked on a few of the titles, and it looks like their streaming end dates have been extended! I will be updating this post later, with the correct dates, but it looks like something happened between this post going up, and now.] |
Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
Netflix wants to support the challenge!
(Not sure I'll still be subscribing to the streaming by that time.) |

Re: 2011 The Criterion Collection - Challenge #3 Discussion Thread
24 hours (on the East Coast) until the start of the challenge. So, what's the first pick going to be for everyone.
I'm probably kicking things off with Rashomon. It's been a while since I've watched it, so it'll be good to see it again. Also, got some List Thread OCD kickin' in...some of you need to delete your conversational posts. I don't want some of the newer participants to get confused about the threads. |
