Ash Ketchum's August 2011 Animation Challenge: from Astro Boy to Zoids

1. ASTRO BOY (1963/Japan, b&w, anime robot series, Mushi Productions/NBC)

The granddaddy of Japanese animation and the first animated half-hour TV series in Japan and the first Japanese animated series to be shown in the U.S. The DVD set I have has only two eps. in their original Japanese, so I watched those, plus two others in the set, to make my first entry in this challenge. "Ditto" is quite an interesting episode because it's about the first robot to be elected president anywhere (the country he's elected to run is called "Goshen") and what happens when the human who created him, with the intention of using the robot to aid his own run for President, tries to overthrow him.


2. BAREFOOT GEN (1983/Japan, color, 83 min., anime wartime drama)
DVD/in Japanese with English subs.
Dir.: Mamoru Shinzaki. Manga by Keiji Nakazawa.
Spoiler:
Animated feature based on the manga memoirs of a man who, as a boy, survived the atomic bomb blast at Hiroshima at the end of WWII. The manga had way more political material and a critique of the Japanese military government. The film condenses events from four volumes of the manga. Cartoonish boy characters move within a graphic depiction of the gruesome effects of the bomb on people and the cityscape. It’s a jarring, but effective mix and ends on a note of hope. The manga is much harsher, particularly in the way it shows how Japanese society was reduced to a dog-eat-dog world in the aftermath of the bomb. Followed by a second film three years later.

“The Island of Mystery,” posits that ancient statues found on an island were left by a race of alien visitors 200,000 years ago. This predates Erich von Daniken’s “Chariots of the Gods?” by nearly ten years. “The Return of Cleopatra” looks at unrest in modern Egypt and how a robot Cleopatra is positioned to exploit it. Some bits foreshadow the recent unrest in Egypt, such as having the group behind it all be called “the Crimson Brotherhood,” a la the Muslim Brotherhood.

4.GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (1988/Japan, 88 min., color, anime wartime drama)

Spoiler:
Heartbreaking drama about a brother and sister in Japan in the last months of World War II and their struggle to survive after they’ve been orphaned. Detailed account of their day-to-day battles with starvation and deteriorating health and the breakdown of society around them, as American bombers devastate the homes and infrastructure, leavened with flashbacks to happier times and the persistence of memories, even in the youngest. The fireflies the orphans use to “light up” their cave home are a metaphor for their own brief lives. While BAREFOOT GEN boasts the raw power of its graphic images of death and destruction, GRAVE has moments of delicate artistry and is the more cinematic of the two.


5. DANGAIO (1987/Japan, 85 min., color, sci-fi mecha anime adventure/OAV)
VHS/Vols. 1, 3/in Japanese with English subs.

Classic 1980s OAV giant robot action, this time piloted by three hot babes and one dude. They were given amnesia and trained to pilot these fighting vehicles which combine into the monstrous “Dangaio,” but they retained enough of their memories to resist and rebel against the space pirates they were supposed to be working for. The credits on this production read like a Who’s Who of 1990s mecha anime: Koichi Ohata (Genocyber), Shoji Kawamori (Macross Plus), Masami Obari (Detonator Orgun), Hideaki Anno (Evangelion). This was one of the first anime releases to be distributed on VHS in the U.S. I distinctly remember the ads for it 20 years ago on the back of assorted fan magazines. The distributor was U.S. Renditions, which I believe turned into ADV. Manga Entertainment later edited (butchered) the three volumes into one volume and released it in a dub-only version. I prefer the original, even though I’m missing Volume 2.

6. MAGIC USER’S CLUB aka Maho Tsukaitai! (1996/Japan, color, magical fantasy-high school comedy anime/OAV)

Five high school kids with nascent magical powers form an after-school club (which has to share space with the much larger manga club) and their aim is to combat a mysterious alien force that observes the kids (esp. the hot girls) and sometimes tries to abduct them. Lots of fan service. Very funny at times. If Harry Potter was done like this, I’d be that franchise’s biggest fan. I have three episodes of this 6-part series on a fan-sub VHS (where the translated title is "Magical Hop Step") and two more on a pre-record VHS from Anime Works. I’m missing ep. 4. Not clear why it's called "Magic User's Club" [singular] and not "Magic Users' Club." [plural]

The final episode wraps things up, sort of. The alien entity hovering over Japan is never quite defined. I would have liked a longer series. There was a TV follow-up, but I don’t know if it’s ever been released here. I have no episodes from it.


7b. GREAT DANGAIOH (2001/Japan, color, giant mecha sci-fi anime/TV series)

TV remake of “Dangaio,” which I viewed a couple of nights earlier. In this one, they defeat the enemy in an exciting, conclusive battle in the very first episode. So where do they go from here? Hard to tell from ep. 2. Doesn’t stick close to the original. Seems influenced more by “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” The three young lead characters definitely echo the three from “Evangelion.” I have more eps. of this on DVD.


7c. OH MY GODDESS! (1993/Japan, color, magical girl fantasy anime/OAV)

One of those anime series where a nerdy guy magically acquires a hot magical girl companion, the answer to his every dream, yet doesn’t know what to do when she gets there. This girl is Belldandy, some kind of Nordic goddess, who enters into a contract with the college boy, Keiichi, and the two move into an abandoned temple which gets magically refurbished.

Okay, This is a five-part series, each part on a separate VHS tape from AnimEigo. Pts, 1-4 are 29 min. each, while Pt. 5 is 40 min. Would it have hurt to put them all on one tape? If they ever came out with a DVD containing the whole series on one disc, I wouldn't buy it. I don’t like the series enough to upgrade. I only paid about $10 for all five tapes, used. Now that I’ve finally watched them, I can pull them off the shelf and move some DVDs in there. In these eps., more girls are pulled into Keiichi’s orbit, including Belldandy’s sisters—older, sexier Urd and younger, temperamental Skuld. Somewhere along the line, a force comes along to pull Keiichi and Belldandy apart, causing emotional anguish to both. This series is much more dramatic than comical. “Tenchi Muyo” handled this kind of plot situation much, much better, with a more astute mix of high comedy and drama. You got to know those characters and care about them. Not these. Keiichi and Belldandy and company never come to life.


9. BAREFOOT GEN 2 (1986/Japan, 85 min., color, anime drama)

This sequel to BAREFOOT GEN (see #2) is set three years later (1948) and shows the continuing struggle of Gen, his mother and his adopted younger brother Ryuta to survive in the ruins of Hiroshima. We see the occupying American soldiers at large in the city, including riding around in jeeps throwing gum and candy bars to the hungry kids. Gen and Ryuta fall in with a group of homeless kids who make their living in various rackets centered around the thriving black market. There’s no real narrative arc, just a series of random scenes which culminate in a tragedy and a rather forced upbeat ending. The characters look less cartoonish here. I’d already watched BAREFOOT GEN earlier this week (in preparation for a presentation of it to students on Thursday), so I watched the sequel today, on the 66th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.


10. JUNGLE TAITEI YUKI GA MIRAI O KAERU (aka Jungle Emperor Leo Special) (2009/Japan, 106 min., color, animated TV special)

Dir.: Goro Taniguchi. Based on the manga by Osamu Tezuka. Reboot of “Kimba the White Lion.”

This is a high-tech remake of “Kimba the White Lion,” in which Panja, the white lion, and his cub Leo (the one who was called Kimba in the U.S.) and all their animal friends are virtual prisoners in a nature preserve on a volcanic island that actually houses a massive underground complex built by a megalomaniac corporate tycoon with sinister plans for the animals. The tycoon’s little son, Keiji, flees the complex to mingle with the animals and finds he can talk to them and understand them. He becomes friends with Leo. The basic plot is easy to follow without subs., but there are key nuances and actions that need serious explaining and it got more and more frustrating as it went along. However, it’s consistently beautiful to look at, with theatrical quality animation. The animal scenes are generally very cute. I bought this at a Japanese video store. Will it ever get released in the U.S.? The last Kimba remake, JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO (1997), did.

11. HYPER-COMBAT UNIT DANGAIOH (1987/Japan, 72 min., color, sci-fi mecha anime adventure/OAV)

This is the condensed English-dubbed version of DANGAIO, listed above (see #5). Part 1 is reduced to an 11-minute rehash. Part 2 is cut down to approx. 25 min. while Part 3 is mostly intact. Since I don’t have Part 2 on VHS, this is my only chance to see any of it. The English dubbing, with heavy doses of profanity, is annoying. Why couldn’t they just have released all three parts intact on one disc with a bilingual soundtrack? I don’t get it.


12. GANTZ (2004/Japan, color, animated sci-fi TV series/Gonzo)

I watched eps. 1-4 for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge and then I read the first two volumes of the manga. Vol. 2 ends right at the beginning of ep. #5. Too trippy to try and summarize, but clearly one of the most daring and original of anime series I’ve seen in some time. The girl who survived in ep. #4 comes back to her life only to find that her real self survived the suicide attempt, meaning she can’t go back home because her “real” self is there. So she goes and lives with the protagonist, Kei, a perennially horny high school boy who is only a “fax” copy of his now-dead real self. Which creates some interesting tensions. And humor.


13. GENSHIKEN (2004/Japan, color, animated comedy-drama TV series/Bandai)

Spoiler:
An animated look at Otaku (fan) culture in Japan, focusing on a college club devoted to the “study of visual culture,” which seems to mean primarily pornographic anime-themed fanzines. The girlfriend of one of the members is appalled at the group’s behavior and obsessions. Until they ask her to cosplay. I read Volume 1 of the manga also. Excellent look at modern life for a certain class of young people in Japan. Filled with realistic details.

Pulled a random VHS tape off the shelf, from a spinoff series I have no other episodes from, although I have episodes from earlier series in the El Hazard franchise. Needless to say, it took a while to figure out where and when it was set and who the main characters were. (Plot: three high school students and their teacher find themselves in an alternate dimension that looks like something out of the Arabian Nights, complete with magical priestesses and a beautiful princess.) Interestingly, each episode is completely different from the others, so there were plenty of surprises and no formula to fall back on. A cute, fun show, with a very pretty setting.


15. GANTZ (2004/Japan, color, animated sci-fi TV series/Gonzo)

Things keep getting weirder in this series. More people die, including a boy and his grandma and a quartet of roughneck bikers, and turn up in that room with the main characters and then have to go out and hunt aliens. Things move pretty slowly because nobody wants to make a decisive move. None of them really want to kill the aliens, even though their own survival depends on it. I find this inaction more than a little frustrating.


16. ASHITA NO JOE aka TOMORROW’S JOE (1970/Japan, color, animated drama TV series)

Classic anime show about Joe, a slum kid who becomes a boxing champ. I watched the first four eps., which precede his long stint in prison. He leads a group of orphaned kids in a series of moneymaking schemes in a shantytown neighborhood in Tokyo. An old drunk who used to manage boxers wants to train Joe after watching him fight off a band of Yakuza. But Joe’s arrogance and cockiness get him in trouble. Beautifully designed and animated with strong facial detail in the adult characters and bold graphics used to bring the slums and industrial areas to life. Later turned into two movie versions, which I also have. The first anime from the ’70s that I’ve watched for this challenge.

17. OH MY GODDESS: THE MOVIE (2000/Japan, color, 106 min., animated fantasy)

This is much more elaborate than the “Oh My Goddess” OAV series. There’s a serious conflict among the gods and poor Belldandy is deprived of her memory leaving Keiichi and her sisters to try and jog it back. It gets very complicated and pseudo-philosophical. The combatants practically talk each other to death. There are some very pretty winged fairy characters including one who takes the form of a hot college girl who joins the Motor Club so she can stay close to Keiichi and Belldandy. At one point she strides through the campus looking for Keiichi, barging into every class in progress until she finds the lecture hall he’s in. She brushes aside the instructor and walks up to Keiichi and pulls him out of his seat and out into the hallway. Lucky bastard.


18. ASHITA NO JOE aka TOMORROW’S JOE (1970/Japan, color, animated drama TV series)

When I first came across this series on the used VHS shelf in Book Off some ten years ago, I bought the first volume and one volume from the middle of the series to sample it. When I went back to buy the rest, they were all gone. This is the middle volume. I picked this one because it had a complete boxing match in it. It’s Joe’s first professional bout after getting out of prison. The fight takes up all of eps. 38 and 39. It’s quite a spectacle. It’s like an old Warner Bros. boxing drama, but done in the 1970s by Japanese animators. I love this series and wish I’d bought the whole thing when I had the chance.


19. PHOENIX (HI NO TORI) (2004/Japan, color, animated cosmic-historical-sci-fi TV series/Tezuka Production)

This TV series was an ambitious attempt to adapt Osamu Tezuka’s life work into anime, following various one-shots in the 1980s. Given that the TV series was only 12 eps., there was a limit to what they could do, so they picked among the different volumes. The first four eps. were based on “Dawn,” set in ancient Japan and dealing with various people trying to stay alive amidst constant warfare, pillage and plunder and the attempts to kill or capture the legendary Phoenix. I consider this TV series one of the few Tezuka-based anime productions made after his death (in 1989) to retain the purity of his vision.

20. THE VIOLINIST OF HAMELN (1996/Japan, color, animated fantasy TV series)

The onscreen title in the subtitle on the fan-sub is “Hameln the Violinist,” which makes more sense since it’s about a violinist named Hameln who can play “magical music” to fend off demons as he escorts Princess Flute to her home kingdom to combat the “evil ones.” (His violin looks more like a cello, though.) Each episode has its own classical music theme: in #1, it’s Mozart’s “Requiem”; in #2, it’s Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker”; in #3, it’s Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”; and in #4, it’s Rossini’s “William Tell Overture.” Although this looks like it’s set in medieval Europe somewhere, the signs are all in Japanese and the characters actually reference Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Which would put this after those guys lived. There’s a pianist who also plays magical music and who joins the main characters in ep. 3. He carries his piano on his back. Intriguing ideas, but suffers from extremely limited animation.

Spoiler:
“The Resurrection” is only two episodes, which means cutting out a lot from the “Resurrection” manga. It’s a straight sci-fi story about a young researcher on the moon who is nearly killed in an explosion and given a part-mechanical brain, which causes him to “see” humans as monsters and an ordinary robot as a beautiful girl. “Transformation” is based on the “Strange Beings” manga and is about a poor girl who kills a Buddhist nun and is forced to take her place and relive time until it’s her turn to be killed by herself. “The Sun” is about a prince-warrior who has a wolf’s head grafted onto his own and is caught up in regional struggle between provinces in China, Korea and Japan. There are three more episodes devoted to “The Sun” in the next anime volume. The theme of eternal life and the Phoenix being reborn runs through this entire series.


22. ASHITA NO JOE (TOMORROW’S JOE) (1980/Japan, color, 152 min., anime boxing drama/movie)

What they did here was take the entire 79-episode TV series from 1970-71 and edit it into a movie version for theatrical release. So the first four episodes, which I already saw, are condensed into 17 minutes, while the two later episodes I saw that were devoted to a single boxing match are condensed into seven minutes. At least I get to see parts of Joe’s saga that weren’t in the eight TV episodes I have, including his time in prison. And the big bout at the end with his prison buddy-turned-boxing champ Rikishi. That takes up 18 min. I like the TV eps. better.

23a. DRAGON CENTURY (1988/Japan, 54 min., color, anime fantasy/AIC)

Spoiler:
Two strung-together made-for-video episodes about dragons coming to Earth. One is set in contemporary Tokyo with the military battling the emerging dragons, the other 200 years later in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo where dragon bouts are staged in the ruins of the Tokyo Dome. A cute girl basically calls the shots for the dragon hero in each episode. (Yes, it’s the same dragon 200 years later.) The dragons are here to ward off an oncoming demon attack, but the military attacks and kills most of the dragons. Bad idea. Neither story is developed well enough. Why didn’t they just make a one-hour episode devoted to one story? Or make a longer series? Nicely animated, though.


23b. THE VIOLINIST OF HAMELN (1996/Japan, 30 min., color, animated fantasy movie)

Spoiler:
A short theatrical movie designed as a pilot or something for the TV series which followed soon after. (See #20) It’s much more comical in tone than the series, with lots of slapstick amidst the battles with demons. I don’t quite get it. One of those really odd pieces that just doesn't seem worth the effort. Because it's such a short movie, I count it as a half-entry.


24. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011/U.S., color, CGI-heavy sci-fi, 20th Century Fox)
Seen in a theater.

Spoiler:
The first non-anime I've seen for this challenge. Rather cartoonish CGI apes went a long way toward enforcing, rather than suspending, my disbelief throughout. Then when they started attacking humans I wanted to see every last one of those hairy bastards blown apart by Expendables-style automatic weapons, CGI or no CGI, the worthless little shits. But, alas, that wasn't the ending we got. Flock to your zoos, humans, and make sure those "Goddamned dirty apes" are locked up where they belong!

The first episode in the multi-series “El Hazard” franchise. Not sure how, but three Japanese high school students and one of their teachers are sent into an alternate dimension that looks like medieval Persia but with flying craft. The lead student, Makoto, male, resembles the missing Princess Fatora, so he’s called upon to impersonate her.


25b. EL HAZARD 2: THE MAGNIFICENT WORLD (1997/Japan, color, 58 min., anime fantasy series/OAV/Pioneer)

“El Hazard” is a lot like “Tenchi Muyo!” only set in an alternate universe. A young hero from Earth is surrounded by beautiful women companions as they go off on a journey to find his wayward high school teacher who ran away on the day he was supposed to marry a priestess. Other hot babes abound, including a villainess named Diva. Pleasant diversion and nicely animated and designed.

26a. EARTH GIRL ARJUNA (2001/Japan, color, anime eco-fantasy/TV series)

A high school girl from the archery club gets picked to be a new incarnation of an ancient spiritual warrior just in time to fight some ancient worm-like giant monster which attacks a Japanese nuclear power plant. The boy at school who likes her gets caught up in it, too. There’s a strong ecological theme to it, but, alas, I didn’t understand much of it. I didn’t find any of these characters worth rooting for. Maybe they’ll get more interesting in later episodes, although this volume is all I have. It was made at that awkward point in anime history when they were trying to figure out how to incorporate CGI into 2-D animation. There’s a debate over nuclear power in it, ten years before the March 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan.

“The Sun” continues its story of a nobleman-warrior with a wolf’s head who is caught up in a war between Buddhism and the ancient gods of the land. Interestingly, the Buddhists are the bad guys. The “Sun” manga was in two volumes and is the longest story in the “Phoenix” manga series. There’s a whole parallel story set in the future that’s completely omitted from the anime. (I can understand why—four episodes would not have been enough.) “The Future” is based on the “Tale of the Future” story in the Phoenix manga and cuts out quite a bit, but retains the important elements of Tezuka’s vision of a post-apocalyptic world and its sole human survivor. Ep. 13 takes place over the course of about a billion years. An absolutely amazing finale to a breathtaking series.

I love 1980s OAV (made-for-video) anime. The artwork and design are beautiful, there are plenty of R-rated elements that were not allowed in TV series, and the stories are generally given just the right amount of time to tell them. This 3-part epic tells the story of three ninja “Shadow Warriors” who are destined to put a stop to Nobunaga Oda’s rise to power in Japan in the 1580s. Much of this is based on the historical record, except, of course, the part where Oda becomes a “true demon god” and aligns with the demonic “Seven Ninjas of Oboro,” to unleash monstrous demons on their opponents. Imaginative and action-packed. These three parts were also edited together and cut down by at least a half-hour to make a feature film called WRATH OF THE NINJA.


29. DOG OF FLANDERS (1997/Japan, 102 min., color, anime drama/movie/Pioneer)

Back in 1975, there was a successful anime TV series in Japan based on the famous novel, “Dog of Flanders.” In 1997, the director of the original series was called back to do a full-fledged theatrical animated film based on the novel, which has been filmed in live-action many times in the west. (I saw the 1960 version starring David Ladd in a theater when I was a kid.) It’s a beautifully made film, but an absolute heartbreaker and far more tearjerking for me than GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES. It’s about a poor boy, an aspiring artist, and his dog and their desperate travails in 19th century Belgium. The achingly beautiful music score is by Taro Iwashiro and the end song, “When I Cry,” is performed, in English, by Dianne Reeves. An English dubbed version was released, but it’s about nine minutes shorter.

The first episodes of the newest season of Pokémon. Ash Ketchum (now there’s a familiar name…) enters a new region and a new round of tournaments and gym battles. He also picks up a new female traveling companion. Her name is Iris and she’s darker-skinned than any previous main character on the show. It’s not clear what ethnicity she’s meant to be (not that such a thing is EVER clear in anime), but she’s very cute and perky, and not nearly as sassy as Misty was. Some adorable new Pokémon are introduced here, including Oshawott, Tepig and Deerling. The series is now in its 13th year. P.S. I read somewhere on the web that the character of Iris is meant to be black.

After watching the movie version made 22 years later (see #29), I dug out my one tape of the TV series that it was based on. The tape has the first five episodes. They’re much more upbeat than the movie. The series starts when its child protagonists are about two years younger. The episodes are less plot-driven than focused on the characters’ everyday lives and we see the kids explore the world around them and get to know each other and experience nature firsthand. This show is just an absolutely beautiful work of art and I found it completely absorbing even without subtitles. I wish I’d bought the whole series when I had the chance. This series was the first offering of the famous series, "World Masterpiece Theater," in which literary works from the west were adapted into animation. I have several other tapes from that series ("Little Princess," "Pollyanna," "Anne of Green Gables," etc.), all in Japanese without subs.

“Urusei Yatsura” (aka Those Obnoxious Aliens) is arguably the funniest anime series ever. It’s the one about the horny high school boy who lives with a hot alien babe named Lum, yet he’s always chasing other girls. It’s got a large, ever-growing cast of insane characters, and it never runs out of lunatic imagination. It’s a satire of Japanese social mores and customs and relies a lot on knowledge of Japanese history and culture. The manga creator, Rumiko Takahashi, was surprised at its popularity in the U.S. Ms. Takahashi, the preeminent female manga artist in Japan, also created “Ranma ½” and “Inuyasha,” among many other popular titles. Mamoru Oshii went on to direct GHOST IN THE SHELL.


33. WONDER WOMAN (2009/U.S., 74 min., color, anime superhero DTV movie/Warner Bros.) DVD
Dir.: Lauren Montgomery. Based on the DC comic book. Voice cast: Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Alfred Molina, Virginia Madsen.

I don’t like the tone of this. Everyone’s saracastic and full of wisecracks and too cool for the room. And the voice acting is so bland—you have a cast of good actors and they’re just reading lines. Where’s the sense of wonder? Where’s that innocence and sense of righteousness that these comic books had? This is an origin story, so Wonder Woman should have been a little more innocent, more curious, more awed by things out in the world. Why is the hero such a dick? I got tired of everyone slapping him so often. It got so I really didn’t care about any of them. And his banter with Diana is downright boring. I didn’t like the design of the characters either. Maybe I should stick to anime for this challenge.

I read volume 1 of the manga and then decided to get Vols. 1-2 of the anime. The manga was more intriguing. The plot is one of those typically bizarre tales of mystical transformation that seem, at times, to make up 90% of anime production. Here, a 14-year-old boy turns into a winged master thief named Phantom Dark, who steals art treasures out from under the noses of the police. Only problem is, he can’t control the transformation when he’s around a pretty classmate that he has a crush on. I found the second episode confusing, so I popped the DVD out rather than stick with eps. 3 & 4, and put something else in. Maybe I’ll return to this disc before the Challenge is over.

This series has quite a cult reputation, but I found it to be a feeble knock-off of “Cowboy Bebop.” It has a comic tone, but it’s never funny. There’s a lot of shooting and destruction, but nobody gets killed. The hero, Vash the Stampede, is a flamboyantly dressed outlaw who’s astoundingly inept. He’s followed by two annoying young women who turn out to be insurance investigators. One of them is named Meryl Stripe—seriously. It’s set on a planet that looks like the Old West, but everyone has high-tech weapons.

Cute and charming series about sophomores in an all-girl high school who are members of the Light Music Club. They need a fourth member to keep from being disbanded and through a set of comical circumstances they wind up with Yui, an avowed klutz who can’t play a single instrument. They work at temp jobs to get the $ to buy her a guitar and then prevail upon her to learn the damn thing. When she fails her exams and has to take a make-up, they all have to help her study for it, again, to keep the club from disbanding. It’s a slice-of-life comedy about four girls who form a band and find they have to put in a great deal of effort to sound like something and, thankfully, they don’t have the distraction of boys. A real breath of fresh air. A friend of mine once cosplayed as Mio, in the costume featured in the picture above, at an anime convention and a photo of her appeared in The New York Times the next day.

Well, I was wrong in my assessment of Iris (see #30). She’s getting sassy all right, and a lot more contentious than Misty ever was. She and Ash get a new traveling companion in Cilan, a gym leader and Pokémon Connoisseur who feels he can learn from Ash. He’s dressed like a waiter at a high-end restaurant and even whips up a gourmet meal for them on the road. Team Rocket is portrayed very differently here, including being outfitted with dark new uniforms. They’re more subdued and focused, completely no-nonsense as they take orders from their boss via laptop and do exactly what he says. Quite a change for them. The new Pokémon come in a wide variety, including one that’s very pig-like and one that has a few quirky ideas of his own. I couldn’t find ep. #8. I must have missed it.


37. THE LITTLEST WARRIOR (1961/Japan, 69 min., color, animated historical drama/movie/Toei)

This is the English-dubbed version of a film that was only Japan’s fourth animated color feature. The VHS copy I have was made decades ago from a syndicated TV print that has a © 1975 marker on it. I bought it about 15 years ago or so from a used video bin. The image is cropped and the color is somewhat faded. The print is 13 minutes shorter than the Japanese version. It’s still a beautiful movie. The dubbing isn’t bad and the original songs are redone beautifully with English lyrics. I watched this in conjunction with the original Japanese version so I could see what was cut for the dub.


38. ANJU TO ZUSHIOMARU (1961/Japan, 83 min., color, animated historical drama/movie/Toei)

This is an animated feature based on a classic Japanese folk tale that was filmed in live-action in 1954 by Kenji Mizoguchi as SANSHO THE BAILIFF. It’s a tale of a well-off family undone by an envious, treacherous lord, with the two children sold into slavery. There are fairy tale elements, such as the spectacle of the family’s drowning maid transformed into a mermaid and the sister walking into a pond and transforming into a glittering swan. I’d previously seen it only in its English dub form, THE LITTLEST WARRIOR (see #37), in a cropped and faded print, so finally seeing it in its original form, in widescreen, with beautiful color reproduction is like seeing it for the first time. It’s a breathtaking work of Japanese art. Some very beautiful scenes featuring slow pans of the Mikado’s estate and other palatial grounds were cut from the dub—too slow-moving for children, I imagine--as well as a few dialogue scenes and two songs.

Apparently, you need to know what happened in “Slayers Next,” the second season, which I’ve never seen and have no episodes from.

Oddball short-length OAV series set in 1920s Tokyo, involving a group of girls who run an all-female theatrical troupe but also pilot early mecha combat vehicles in a war with some secret entity called “Black Web.” Nicely animated and designed, with interesting characters, but the plotting is way off. Ep. 4 seems to have nothing to do with Ep. 3. I haven’t seen eps. 1-2, so I was kind of lost. The music is really nice, though. I’ve seen the later SAKURA WARS MOVIE, which was pretty spectacular, but was undermined, for me, by its strident undertone of anti-Americanism.

As long as the job doesn’t require stealing Pokémon, Jessie and James are apparently quite competent. What a surprise. And they wear dark hats, shades and trenchcoats. Even Meowth. Maybe they should get their own series now.

Unusual collaboration between Marvel Comics and King Features Syndicate designed to produce a series making use of King Features’ famous comic strip characters, Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician and Lothar. They all have kids, too, so that’s what was supposed to bring in the kid viewers. I need to see more eps. to see if I like this series or not. But I did find the audio commentary interesting. They pointed out that the voice actors all did their lines together, like a radio show, a practice that’s very rare today, when actors are more likely to come in, do their lines alone and leave it to the editor to cut and paste the lines where they belong. That’s one reason English-language voice-dubbing sounds so lifeless these days—no one to play off of.

In eps. 14 & 15 we meet a black female adult character in the big afro’d-Lenora, who works at the Nacrene City Museum as a curator, the second significant black character in the cast this season (after Iris). She beats Ash in a gym battle. And, unlike the voice actress for Iris, the actress doing Lenora's voice is black. (I checked.)

Ash & Co. get lost in Pinwheel Forest and meet a temperamental artist named Burgh whom Cilan makes fruit salad for (and sleeps next to!) in the gayest episode yet. Question: how do they fit their sleeping bags and cooking implements in those tiny backpacks? Ash sits with a fake Pokémon connoisseur who’s out to get revenge for Cilan beating her. The episodes where they don’t have official battles are the more interesting ones.

I watched the first two eps. for the TV on DVD challenge and have always been meaning to get back to this DVD and see the rest, but it’s been so long since then that I had to re-watch the first two eps. This is the one where Ash meets a new girl, Dawn, another ten-year-old, who becomes his Misty-like traveling companion. Brock, from the first season, shows up out of the blue and joins them. (The newest season, which I’ve watched 19 eps. of so far for this challenge, has yet a new girl, Iris.) Most of the Pokemon eps. I have are on VHS, taped at EP speed off the Cartoon Network, so it’s nice to see some on DVD. The colors and backgrounds are so beautiful. I should get more of these on DVD.

I re-read the manga before re-watching this movie, which I’d previously seen when it played theatrically in Feb. 2002. I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. It’s very different from the manga, which had a much stronger story and more interesting characters and relationships. This one plays up the sci-fi trappings, political machinations and retro-futuristic backgrounds, which have lots of awkward CGI FX inserted into a 2-D animation story. The characters and story lose out. The manga was an early story by Tezuka which plays like a rough draft of “Astro Boy,” which came later.

It’s dangerous to mix seasons of Pokémon for this challenge, because the episodes tend to blend in with each other and I really want to finish Pokémon Black and White while the earlier eps. are still fresh in my head. But I wanted to finish the eps. on this disc so I wouldn’t have to go back and watch the first four again when I decide to continue with this season. Lots of good stuff in these eps., including some interesting Pokémon-to- Pokémon interaction. In addition, there’s the dancing Ludicolo trio and Team Rocket’s fake gym adorned with psychedelic day-glo colors, all a ruse to cover their Pokémon -stealing scam.


47. ICZER-ONE (1985/Japan, 100 min., color, anime sci-fi OAV)

Three-part series bundled together on one movie-length disc. With the Iczer series, “Dangaioh” (see #5 and #11, above) and “Vampire Princess Miyu,” Hirano attained a place as one of the masters of 1980s made-for-video (OAV) anime. This one’s got everything notable about the format: beautiful designs for characters, monsters and mecha; bright colors and bold lines; copious nudity; nubile young heroines; ample gore; surreal imagery; giant robot battles; mass destruction of neighborhoods in Tokyo; and grotesque tentacled monsters doing questionable things to the heroine (while keeping it safely out of “hentai” territory). The plot has to do with hot alien babes wanting to take over Earth by sending monsters to possess humans. High school girl Nagisa loses her parents to the monsters and is recruited by super-heroine Iczer One (in tight pink body suit with black boots), an alien herself, to join in saving Earth. I love '80s anime.

I tend to prefer the episodes where they don’t battle. “Venipede Stampede” is particularly good because it shows a Venipede swarm (think football-sized centipedes) invading a city and the resultant debate that Ash has with rival Trip over how to combat it, with Ash favoring reasoning with the creatures and trying to understand what caused their migration from their natural habitat outside the city, while Trip lines up his fire Pokemon to burn up the invaders with flame attacks. So you get a sense of Ash’s philosophical stance after years of training Pokemon. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, yet the next one completely ignores it, leading me to believe that there’s a missing episode that did not get dubbed for American broadcast. I wonder why.


49. ASHITA NO JOE 2 (1981/Japan, 112 min., color, anime drama/movie)

This was a much better quality DVD than that for ASHITA NO JOE THE MOVIE (see #22) and the animation is much more polished, not a surprise since it came ten years after the original. This is more of a straight boxing story than the previous movie and TV series, which had all sorts of sociological details left out of this. Joe also faces a greater variety of international opponents, including two from South America, one from Korea and one from Indonesia (who jumps around the ring like a monkey!). More English is spoken in this. “Joe, you very strong man.” Beautiful animation and design, but much less involving than the earlier versions.

I taped some random episodes once and decided to watch them now when I needed to watch something that didn’t require taking notes. And, whaddaya know? There’s plenty of good stuff in these episodes to write about. Why didn’t I tape more of this series? Why didn’t I get all three parts of “Last Son of Krypton”? Part II is wonderful! There’s a scene where young Clark flies for the first time that encapsulates all the joy and wonder of being a superhero. And it’s done with such grace. The Mxyzptlk episode is quite good and draws on the original comic book story from the 1940s. And Gilbert Gottfried does the voice! Great stuff.

I had no idea what was going on, who these brats were, or where and when the friggin’ thing is set. Just a random episode taped off Cartoon Network when I was taping Pokémon episodes. It’s no Digimon, believe me.


51. DIGIMON DATA SQUAD (2006/Japan, color, anime fantasy battle TV series/Toei)

I’m a fan of the original “Digimon” series and I very much enjoy this variation on it, with a more hard science fiction approach to the subject and older kids involved as members of a secret agency designed to keep Digimon out of the human world. Interesting for its focus on the characters and their interactions, including intense rivalry between team members Marcus, a scrappy unpolished fighter from the streets, and Thomas Norstein, a supercilious high achiever from an Austrian family with royal roots.

I didn’t really like the stories here, but I enjoyed the design and animation. I also don’t understand why Bruce Wayne is portrayed as so humble and ordinary and dully dressed. Isn’t he supposed to be a rich playboy?

And she doesn’t get punished for it! Both of these episodes are quite action-packed and full of adventure, including attacks by angry bat and spider Pokémon.

53. DOCTOR STRANGE (2007/U.S., 76 min., color, animated superhero DTV movie/Marvel)

I saw one DC animated movie so far for this challenge (WONDER WOMAN, see #33), so I felt I needed at least one Marvel title. So I put in this one, hoping for some of that beautiful psychedelic and surreal color imagery from the comics I remember reading in the ‘60s, the ones that were drawn by Steve Ditko. None of that is in the movie, a remarkably colorless and unimaginative work that doesn’t even introduce Dr. Strange as a magical superhero until almost an hour into it. It’s slow and ponderous and everyone talks in a low, deep voice, so I found myself being lulled to sleep quite often during the course of it. The end credits feature illustrations from the original comic, which makes the entire preceding movie look pale and artless in comparison. The DVD case says 95 min., but the movie itself is 76 min., about on par with the running times of most DTV superhero animated movies. Rated PG-13 because citizens get killed, including being stripped down to their skeletons, during Dormammu’s monsters’ attacks on New York.

Futuristic urban sci-fi mixed with psychic power and demon-hunting, set in Tokyo in 2028. Short movie, which was followed by an equally short sequel. The heroines are an all-female team of special agents from the AMP, Attacked Mystification Police in the subtitled version, but “Abnormal Mystery Police” in the dub. This movie focuses on recruiting young psychic Katsumi Liqueur and persuading her to join the unit. Beautiful animation and design, although the story isn’t really strong enough to stand on its own. It’s more like a setup for a series to follow. In fact, it was later revamped as a 26-episode TV series in 1998. I have eight eps. from that and I’d hoped to watch them for this challenge. As I recall, Movie 2 was just an elaborate flashback, so the TV series was probably an improvement. I wonder if the monstrous demons in it will make the series episodes qualify for the horror challenge in October.

Although the DVD case doesn’t indicate it, this is actually “Zoids: New Century,” the second Zoids series and the actual episode numbers are 76-79. In any event, by all rights I shouldn’t enjoy this since it’s yet another anime battling game series in the mold of “Yu-Gi-Oh” and countless others. Yet I do. Partly it’s because the premise isn’t so ridiculous. Here teams of young adults (older characters than you’d find in Pokémon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, etc.) pilot mecha combat machines designed to resemble animals and fight with them against opposing teams as a competitive sport in vast desert terrain landscapes on another planet. I love the way the mecha is designed and animated, with very fluid movement. They move like CGI creations but look like 2-D animation. The inclusion of so much CGI in post-1997 anime was often quite awkward, yet this looks very smooth and polished. Don’t know how they did it, but it works. The characters are amusing and not annoying, if not very deep. But there’s always Gundam if you want deep.

This basic structure is that of a person with powers being pursued by other people with powers who are part of a highly secret, very powerful organization. The main characters are mostly adults with only one teenager which is a bit different for shows of this type and there is quite of bit of explicit but not graphic sex, violence, and depravity thus the mature rating. The first third of the series was very strong but the plot became repetitious as every couple of episodes a new foe had to be fought. There is an overall arc but its revelation is poorly paced and there is an end which does clearly wrap up the story (which is not always a given in anime) but there was a lack of tension as the finale played out. Although the characters were all interesting and not cookie-cutter, I felt almost no attachment to any of them. A nice try at something a bit different, enjoyable at times but sometimes very slow moving.

This was fun. The fight scenes were all well done and the fairly basic plot was enhanced by the multiple Earths idea. The voice acting was adequate. Owlman was my favorite character followed by the just-a-little-bit-hot Superwoman. I also liked how they included some other superheroes from both worlds. I did miss the JSA though. I guess that would have been just too many characters for one movie.

Several stories of individual GL Corps members told in the framework of an overall arc. Nice epic SF feel, excellent animation, above average voice acting. My only complaint is that I didn't really care for Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordon. Not that he did a bad job, just that I wanted someone a little more heroic sounding. Just a matter of taste really. The arc story was actually somewhat similar to the live action theatrical release but Emerald Knights is sooo much better.
