What is your breaking point for buying new/used DVDs?
 

I want to see what the breaking point for purchasing new/used DVDs is.

The scenario is that you have two identical releases. One is brand new, sealed. The other is used, but is in "like new" condition. All inserts intact, disc surface has been played, but there are no marks. What is the worst case scenario you would be willing to accept.

To appease Mr. Peepers :D, I would "Buy the used disc for $2, instead of the new disc for $4."

Since they're both pretty much equal, I'd buy the cheaper one.

I chose, 'Buy the used disc for $2, instead of the new disc for $4', if it's Like New and in the same condition as New/Sealed but missing the wrapper, then why not save some money?

In my case though, it's more like 'Buy the used disc for $3, instead of the new disc for $15'...:) -kd5-

Actually I usually won't pay more than $1 for most used discs, even for movies I don't have. I think I was being overly generous in my first selection. It would have to be something I REALLY wanted and would probably have to be a BR or rare SE in spotless condition for me to pay $2. But for even those discs that end up in the $5 Walmart bin, I doubt I'd fork over 2 bucks. I think the reason for this is EXPERIENCE. There are many times I got a marginal deal on something that later turned up as a great deal someplace else. I just picked up 3000 Miles to Graceland NEW in an eBay auction for a lot avg of .85. I had earlier paid 1.00 for it used. Not a big deal, but I think you see my argument.

I'd go the cheaper route as well, all I care about is whether the movie plays or not. Of course, all used discs get disinfected as soon as I get them and never had a problem with something being totally gross (i.e. covered in fecal matter).

I have one question for the OP, where in the hell do you find $1 used discs? Even amazon marketplace's $0.01 titles are more than that after shipping (unless it's fulfilled by Amazon and you have Prime). The cheapest used DVD I've seen is $2 at a pawn shop (usually when purchasing more than one)....

If it's a title I'm interested in, and the total net cost including shipping and tax is cheaper for used, and there's some type of quality guarantee, and they're both complete, I'll buy the cheaper one.
However, that comes with a caveat - while I buy new dvds online, I don't really like buying used online unless it's from someplace like here, because youre not sure about the quality/condition and it's a hassle to return. So I'll pay more for a new title, online, because the condition is a lot more assured.
That said, I also don't find dollar disks except at the Dollar Tree, and I don't want any of those titles. The best I've done recently is Blockbuster used where I got season 1 of My Name Is Earl and two 3d movies for about fifteen dollars. That was before the closure clearance, I didn't find anything there then.

My best pawn shop deal was $1.50 when purchasing ten or more and that was for a limited time.

I would go with the cheaper disc.

In your scenario, I would purchase the cheaper disc/set every time (provided it was something I wanted).

I also take into account condition of the case/slipcover and if it's a multi-disc title, the condition of all the hubs.

But at the price range your talking about here, I'd probably buy the new for just a few more bucks.

I would save the money and buy used. If the disc & case are unblemished, who cares if it had been played 1 time or 1000 times? You'll never know the difference.

When it comes to discs, I'll never understand why some people simply refuse to buy used and usually pay more than twice the price.

Whatever the cheapest amount is, every time. As soon as I get a disc I immediately toss the packaging and file it away, so the only thing I care about is the condition of the disc itself.

In this scenario I chose $4 New/$2 Used
