Nice.

I've had mine ready to go for about a month now. Of course, all I did was edit the one I used last year a bit in Microsoft Paint.

Thinking about doing this challenge this year.

What about early 80's slashers like The Burning or Madman? Are they ok?

Yeah, those are Ok. Especially those that made the video nasty list. Check out the references at the bottom of the article for info on the full list.

Although horror films are generally welcome, I'll just mention again that we have a whole challenge in October for Horror, so it's best to approach this challenge as a chance to watch non-horror exploitation and drive-in flicks. If you do watch Horror, watch the shittiest, cheesiest most exploitative Horror you can find.

Nice. I just ran across one of those Warner classic gangster collections that I realized would work too.

I just realized that the drive in picture Caligula used for the title is like 5 minutes down the road from me. I was wondering why that kept looking so familiar to me.

and Dimension X and Rkillgore, those are both awesome.

Probably. Hard to tell since there's no titles. but I don't see any objections.

Yeah, love the banners. Good old South Drive In. I'd love to win the lottery, buy it, and then turn it into a "real" drive-in with 60s-70s movies every week.

Yeah, I think the movie-to-disc ratio and the fact that we can't identify the titles from the cover (just trying to sell it on the cast names) both work in its favor

Most of those are TV movies (Concrete Cowboys, Maybe I'll Come Home..., To All My Friends..., Death Sentence, Katherine), the others low-budget features. BORN TO WIN is more of an arthouse film, directed in New York by Czech New Wave critics' favorite Ivan Passer, definitely not a B-movie, even if it DOES star Karen Black (alongside George Segal). I remember watching them shoot a scene from it in Times Square.

Art house type movies count for this challenge, as far as I know, due to the niche factor. Unless I'm remembering wrong from last year.

I had fun with this last year, but I'm so busy this April I can't aim too high. However, I will participate as much as I can and everyone...I love the effort being put into the banners etc. I'm going to spend some time scanning these threads over the coming weeks.

I couldn't say on this since I didn't compete last year but he's probably just thinking about the B-movie description in the OP

"A B movie is a low-budget commercial motion picture conceived neither as an arthouse film nor as pornography."

Everything Is Illuminated was already rejected on the basis of non-MS3TK-ability, which I think doesn't bode well for arthouse films

Yeah, we're pretty much the opposite of art house films here. If you weren't afraid of getting molested in the john, then it's the wrong movie.

That's a good question. My instinct was to say no, since they are A pictures from a major studio, even though they started off a wave of ripoffs that count. However, The Grindhouse Database lists them as Vigilante/Revenge films, although I can't find any entries specifically for the films.

Any other opinions?

Re: Second Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2011

I'd say no because in my opinion, this challenge should be about the wave of ripoffs. That being said, since Academy Award nominees are being allowed*, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if were allowed since it seems be somewhat consistent with other things being allowed. To me, allowing it is similar to allowing something like Star Wars, which also spawned it's fair share of ripoffs.

I haven't seen any sequels, so I'm not sure if any of them got as stupid as Robocop 3.

*Which I disagree with since we just had an Academy Awards challenge, which I think is where it should be watched.

Yeah, that confirms what I was thinking. The mention on Grindhouse database seemed more descriptive of the category rather than confirming the films themselves. It's like allowing The Exorcist. It spawned tons of ripoffs that are welcome, but it is definitely an A picture.

Selfishly I've been meaning to watch the Dirty Harry movies and would love to count them, but I agree they don't have the right feel. Kind of like counting Harry Potter for the animation challenge on the basis of CGI.

I'd say let Dirty Harry wait. There are just too many other options out there to take advantage of. It's the little unearthed gems and the cheeze that make this challenge fun.

Re: Second Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge March 31-April 30 2011

Even big studio movies in the 70s seem kind of low budget, so it's the hardest to differentiate these types of movies. Even Star Wars was a low budget movie at only ~$12M. All the studios had shut down their special effects departments so Lucas had to reinvent the special effect himself making it seem more expensive than it was. But this is what adds to the cheap look of the decade. All films were naturalistic.
