Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
I saw someone suggest that one disc will have all the Sniffles cartoons while the other will have the Hubie and Bertie cartoons. That seems to make sense.

Guess it's going to be years before we see any new Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck cartoons.
I truly don't understand how such a great DVD Train like The Looney Tunes Golden Collection got derailed like it did.

How were the sales? I'm a longtime fan, but that initial price always put me off. I bought almost all of them used, except for finding vol 4 at Costco for $18 just a few months ago. I know they had to sink money into them for the restorations, but I wonder if they could have done better with cheaper 2 disc sets.
And personally I really disliked the single-character discs. Like a lot of people, I know these shorts from Saturday morning cartoons, where they would have an hour or hour and a half block of mixed shorts. I have to think that might have sold a little better also.
Edit: So are these Platinum collections a lot of repeats of the GC DVDs?

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
It got derailed because Vol 6 had a huge amount of cartoons that almost no one wanted, so sales were low, so they never made volume 7.

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
6 volumes with 60 cartoons each, and none included such classics as:
Fool Coverage (the best of the Daffy salesman vs Porky consumer tunes) "...and one baby zebra..."
and
Upswept Hare - a great Bugs vs Elmer short
IF they had included good shorts vs shorts that "almost no one wanted," maybe sales would have been higher. It's not like they ran out of quality shorts! Like, where's the one where Bugs and that fatter male rabbit compete for the affections of a girl rabbit ("Hare Splitter"), or "Rabbitson Crusoe"
You learn your lesson, you make the next set better, and keep going!

They just wanted to milk it and it bit them in the bugs. The high price tag turned off your average joe. Even I got to admit that I didn't run out and buy each set when they came out because of the price and i love Bugs. Outside of the first one I grabbed them at Big Lots and Costco.
I'll order this set though. Loved the first blu-ray collection.

ding. ding. ding.
I'm sure everyone here will point to sales or Sams club deals, but the fact is if you walked into Wal-Mart, Target or Best Buy the GC collections were $50-$60 on a daily basis. That's a tough sell for 60 year old toons that can be caught on television any day of the week.

Nah, that's bullshit. I'm not a rich man, but I saved up my lousy $60.00 for each awesome set that came along. It was only once a year - you're telling me you can't scrape together sixty dollars for old tunes that are now in pristine condition? Where are your priorities?
But I'm seriously, you guys.

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
I believe that when Vol 6 was announced, it was going to be the final release in the Golden Collection line. So I don't think it was the sales of Vol 6 that killed it.

I mean, really! They started out with such promise, and delivered for so many years...I simply thought it would continue to be terrific, but nothing stays terrific forever, I guess.

Is this also going to come out on standard DVD as well, like Volume One did after the initial BD releases? Just wondering.

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
Which might have been a mistake. They tried to go after the casual fan with the Spotlight Collection and the more hardcore fan with the Golden Collection. Two disc sets could have appealed to both, and spreading 3-4 releases through each year might have been more successful.

Yes - the article at the link in post 77 says it is coming out in both formats. I interpreted it as both versions being released on the same day for vol 2.

I've updated the lists to reflect the shorts on Volume Two of the Platinum Collection. Thanks for the posts everyone.
---
There's only 10 unreleased shorts, but that's better than nothing. I'm a sucker for Looney Tunes though, so I'll get this once it's on sale for a reasonable price, like I did with Volume One.

The Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes Comedy Hour - 'Porky and Friends: Hilarious Ham' 18-'Toon DVD Announced - The latest in the 'Looney Tunes Super Stars' is coming on 11/6
He may be short, pink and pants-less, but when it comes to animated superstardom, Porky Pig proves: the sty's the limit! Now, remastered to pristine, make-your-eyeballs-bug-out condition, these 18 landmark Looney Toons spotlight Porky and pals in a plentitude of porcine cartoon perfection, including Pilgrim Porky's half-baked attempt to put duck on his Thanksgiving menu (Tom Turk and Daffy), followed by Porky as a wildly wacky wagon train scout (Wagon Heels). Then, there's Porky's ham-handed scheme to thwart a ravenous rodent with a robot cat (Mouse Menace), and our piggy protagonist as a clueless cop trying to evict vagrant Daffy from his department store digs (Riff Raffy Daffy). And th-th-th that's NOT all folks! There's further fun afoot with Porky, Elmer Fudd, Bunny and Claude and more in these swine-sational classics from animation's Golden Age!
Once again aimed at the casual fans, rather than the passionate collectors, the folks at Warner Home Video have today announced Looney Tunes Super Stars' Porky & Friends: Hilarious Ham on DVD. This single-disc release priced at $19.98 SRP contains 18 classic cartoon shorts. The titles of these can be found on the rear box art seen at bottom, and immediately below you can see the front of the package for this November 6th release. Check it out:

I did a quick check and I think only two of the shorts have appeared on the LT Golden Collection sets.
* Wagon Heels - Golden Collection V5
* Boob In The Woods - Golden Collection V1

Re: Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies on DVD: The Official Thread
I just don't understand why there has to be so many double-dips on the Platinum Collections. Frankly, the number of repeats are keeping me away. I just don't understand why WB doesn't release the *few* "new to DVD" shorts on single disks for those who've purchased the GC sets.
I fully expect the argument many make in favor of the MOD programs: "I'd rather have it this way than not at all". I *firmly* believe that's exactly what the executives want - that enough people will believe this to support inflated prices and/or re-re-release of material. I don't buy into those arguments. In my book it's as if it were never released.

Only 2 repeats out of 18 for the Porky Pig? Wasn't the Pepe le Pew one also a pretty low ratio like that?
I could see myself picking them up for cheap if that's how they are.
EDIT: According to the DVDTalk review of the Pepe disc, it's 3/17 repeats. Not as good a ratio as Porky, but I think I can let myself buy these two at least.
