Dumping DVDs: Do you watch them before you get rid of them?
 

What I'm asking is, when planing to get rid of a DVD you haven't watched in a while, even one you didn't like, do you rewatch it for a second opinion, or dump it without blinking an eye?

I'm not real big on dumping stuff. Generally speaking, I bought it for a reason. On the rare occasion I do dump a title, there's no need to rewatch it as my opinion is pretty firmly set by that point.

I've pretty much limited myself to going through my unwatched pile each month. Some of these DVDs are films I've never seen, while others are ones I've seen before in the theater, cable, VHS, etc. After each viewing, I make a pretty quickly decision on whether a title is worth viewing again at a later point. Otherwise, it lands in the trade/sell/give away/burn pile without any additional thought.

Exactly. The one time that I sold off a bunch of titles, I wound up regretting it and buying most back eventually.

If I'm dumping DVD's it because I decided I didn't like them enough to be in my collection. Therefore, no re-watching is necessary. It usually means I watched it recently anyhow.

If you've seen it before and it's total junk then there is no need to view it again before selling it. But beware making the decision to toss stuff you "feel" you won't ever watch again. Our moods change day by day and over time. I've sold things off and later (even a few years) end up buying it back. A sequel is announced, a new edition is out, or I just really feel like watching it again. Then I have to track it down and buy it all over again. You could end up paying more for it the second time around. Especially if it ends up rare / hard to find.

But in any case if you really want to sell something and think one more viewing will kill it off for you ... then watch it one more time and then sell it (and hope you don't regret it later).

I have a couple 2 or 3 DVDs that I'll be getting rid of sooner or later, One DVD because my wife and I both thought it was depressing as hell and decided neither of us ever wanted to see it again (Children Of Men), and there are a couple where I ended up buying the extended version of so I have no use for them anymore. Typically though, I don't need or want to watch these again so no, there'll be no rewatch before dumping. -kd5-

Almost every time I've sold something I've regretted it.

But I totally get the OP's point and often do re-watch/read something before giving it away.

I once was hurtin for money and sold a lot of my dvds... probally 100. I regretted it since, and have had to buy some of them back. But I needed the money bad.

I've bought some flicks for $2 or $3 at Big Lots/GoHastings that after watching once as blind buys passed on. (Borderland, Sublime) For the couple bucks I got my moneys worth, but don't need them on my shelf as I'd definitely never revisit them.

I make too many blind buy's -- especially with Hollywood Video having closed recently (I bought over 100 movies for 50 cents each I believe, and another 100+ or so at around $3 each -- and that included over 30 Criterion's) As I watch those I decide whether or not I want them after-wards. I think with the prices I've paid on my films I think it's worth having them in my collection as blind buy's and not simply selling them off. Especially because they are all films I've wanted to see for one reason or another. However, occasionally, having such a large collection DOES lead to a dud or two. And when that happens I feel no regret in selling off those titles.

I've let go of a few titles that I've only watched once or twice but I have a pretty good idea if I'm ever going to watch it again. I bought Contact when it was new years ago, but then after reading the novel I had no desire to ever watch it again, so I was okay with selling the DVD without a rewatch.

Also, with Netflix I can always have it at the house within a few days if the urge hits me, or sometimes even on instant view.

I don't sell movies unless it's a unplanned double dip and I can't return to the store. Then I just stick it in a garage sale and get anywhere between $3-10 for it (depending on the title). I've taken a few to pawn shops & other used DVD stores, but they seem to give a dime or two per title, not worth it even for the titles I've only paid 50 cents for.

Most movies I contemplate getting rid of is because they really are not worth watching again. I have many good movies I would rather spend the two hours time re-watching, why waste it on a film you know you really don't like.

My test is always the channeling surfing test. When you're aimlessly channel surfing and you come across a movie that is in your DVD collection do you select that channel and watch some it?

The way I see it, if you can't even be bothered to watch it while channel surfing, you'll be less likely to get up, pop in the DVD and watch it.

Blind buys are fine if you paid $2-3 each, I think of them as rentals that I get to keep. I don't mind selling or trading them if they were not worth a re-watch.

I do this, but usually if I come across a movie on TV that I own I would get up and put in the DVD - otherwise what's the purpose of owning it?

I dumped about 100 DVDs recently. Barely even noticed, didn't give any a second thought, haven't since.

I just dumped "A Simple Life" Season 1. I said to myself I have to many DVDs I'm getting rid of one so it was between that one and the Kardashians.

The only time I've sold stuff is when I used to buy every new title that would come out. Weather i've seen the movie or not. About half of those titles I didn't care for and eventually sold them.. (at a loss obviously).. Now I only buy movies i've seen before or I know I will like for sure(like Inception). or recommended Criterions, that if i don't like. should be able to recoup my $.

I did 2 thing to rid of DVD that with blind buy (many time) DVD and blu-ray replace DVD.

Usually if I purchase it's because I expect to want the movie or think I can get my money back through re-sale. Once I decide to sell a film I rarely revisit because if I'm ready to expunge I get pissed that I'm stuck with the filth for now and feel guilty I even bought it. It seems rare to be able to sell an item and get anything respectable for it now.

Exactly. This is a good way to prove to yourself that the DVD is worth owning and hanging onto.

One time I sold off a few titles (over fifty) because I needed the money, of course sense that time I bought those plus a lot more as that was awhile back, there were some cheap blind buys ($1.50 each at a pawn shop) that I watched and placed in a pile to go elsewhere as I doubt I will ever watch them again when there are tons of films I like more. NEVER blind buy anything that costs $10-$20, possible waste of money, I do not even spend that on films I have seen and know I will want to own. Now if the film is okay and there is a possible chance I will watch it again maybe not in a year or two yet at some point I may just hang on to it because it is lucky to be worth a dollar and for the way I store my films it takes up no space at all.

I only buy what I like to watch so I have never been in this situation

Sometimes when you buy blind, the movie that interested you just isn't your cup of tea, or sucks, or does something else that drives you up the wall. Then out it goes. No reason to keep it. But I only blind buy movies that are $2-3. Then if its not a keeper, I haven't paid much more than I would have to rent it through Netflix. Same principle for TV series. I'll blind buy something only if it's cheap, say under $10. There's more potential loss there if I don't like it, but more potential gain if I do.
