Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

First time viewings are in orange.

Oct. 2

1: Octane (2003) [DVD] - while driving home, a mother and her teen daughter are targeted by a cult involved in several automobile "accidents". I was lucky to stumble across this little gem a few years back. It came on network TV late one night, quickly catching my interest with it's exceptionally shot visuals and moody score. This film has style to spare. Combining the road and conspiracy genres, it's an interesting watch throughout with many standout scenes and an intriguing aura of mystery. The sequences in the various truckstops make for the best scenes of the film, particularly those involving a sinister motivational speaker, though there's also fun to be had as certain characters party in a diesel's empty tanker trailer. The film only flounders somewhat with a weak conclusion, but overall, it's a hypnotic experience that I've rewatched several times.

Oct. 4

2: Bloodbeat (1985) [VHS] - a family's Christmas reunion gets off to a bad start when the son brings home his girlfriend, leading to an awkward feeling of deja-vu between her and the boy's psychic mother. Weird things begin happening, the weirdest of which happens to be the presence of a glowing samurai warrior who's murderous tendencies appear to be linked to the girlfriend's orgasms. Bloodbeat is one of the more bizarre films you could ever see. What we have here is a slasher shot in Wisconsin by a French director with a ghostly samurai as the killer. It's actually pretty effective for the first two-thirds of the running time, particularly a creepy home invasion and ensuing chase. Through some splendid editing, this sequence is interspersed with the girlfriend's writhing and upward-thrusting in bed. It's also undeniably cool seeing a samurai as the villain in a slasher. During the final third, however, the film veers off in an unsatisfying direction with over-the-top antics and ridiculous special effects. Disappointing, but not enough to ruin the film for me. Oh yeah, excessive overuse of violin chords too. I saw this one a long time ago, so long that I'm counting it as a first viewing.

Oct. 6

3: Shallow Grave (1987) [VHS] - four college girls are on their way to Ft. Lauderdale when they have a blowout that strands them on the side of a rural Georgia road. One of the girls needs to use the restroom, but with nothing in sight, she heads into the woods to do the deed. She wanders too far for her own good, as she winds up seeing a man murder his lover. One thing leads to another as the killer, who happens to be the local sheriff, looks to eliminate all witnesses. A long-time favorite and one of the more effective entries in the slasher subgenre. Acting is stronger than the norm, and the authentic southern atmosphere lends the film an added boost in flavor. Tony March is solid as the murderous sheriff. His mental slide from self-conflict to warped mania manages to unnerve. He also has the trust that being sheriff brings to a person, so the girls have virtually no one to help them. Now, I admittedly didn't care about most of these girls from the get-go. Only Carol Cadby as Patty is likable. She's far more grounded than the others, and it helps that she's quite stunning to boot. The remaining three girls are airheads with grating personalities. Color me surprised when somehow, as the film went on, I actually managed to warm up to Sue Ellen as well. This is important, as there needs to be some emotional weight for one to be invested in their attempts to get Deputy Tom Law to believe them. Immersed in rural, small town atmosphere and containing a real sense of futility, Shallow Grave is a winner.

Oct. 7

4: The Flying Serpent (1946) [DVD] - this disposable cheapie stars George Zucco as an archaeologist who discovers Montezuma's treasure and uses the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl, to kill those he thinks might pose a threat to his secret fortune. This is basically a remake of The Devil Bat. In other words, nothing new. Nothing particularly memorable either, though Zucco does well enough in his role. The special effects for Quetzalcoatl were better than I expected, but they're still not very convincing. This is just your typical 40's flick with all the predictability and lousy attempts at humor you'd likely expect.

5: Sauna (2008) [DVD] - following the decades-long war between Russia and Sweden, a group of soldiers from both countries is assigned the task of defining a new border. Among this group are Eerik and Knut, two brothers who couldn't be more different. The former is a vicious soldier who has been fighting his entire life, while the latter is a civilized collegian who came along due to his expertise in crafting maps. On a scouting run separate from the rest of the group, the two encounter a farmer and his daughter. Bad things happen and the brothers rejoin the expedition the next morning, but what transpired at the farm leads to severe feelings of guilt for Knut. Continuing their trek across a barren swamp, the men eventually come across a mysterious town where no such place should exist. What's more, something seems very off with the inhabitants and with the sauna that stands just outside of the village's reach. Sauna is a picture that festered in my mind for a good while after my initial viewing last December. I didn't know what to expect going in, but I came out thinking that this was one of the most intriguing horror films I had seen in years. The film boasts a strong period setting and some effectively unsettling moments (all about that first time Knut catches a glimpse of a figure across the swamp) set against a mood of pure despair. The acting is resoundingly strong across the board, most notably that of Ville Virtanen as the bloodthirsty Eerik. His character is that of a murderous sociopath who has never known anything but war, yet Virtanen instills the part with a certain sense of empathy and regret underneath the seething hatred. I'm still not sure that I fully understand everything that goes on in the film, but half of the fun is speculating. There are numerous layers here to keep your mind busy with interpretation. All in all, a fascinating film that is rewarding in more ways than I can count.

Oct. 8

6: New Year's Evil (1980) [Netflix streaming] - a rock show host dubbed Blaze gets threatening phone calls during her New Year's Eve gig. The caller informs her that he'll murder a different person each time the clock strikes midnight in one of the four continental U.S. timezones, and odds are that she'll be his final victim. One of the few slashers to have eluded me over the years, it was nice to finally scratch this off the list. It's far from a top-tier effort in the subgenre, however. The killer, played by Kip Niven, isn't the least bit threatening. He only dons a mask towards the end of the film, so he doesn't have that to fall back on either. Also, too many scenes of dancing punk rockers and shitty music for my taste. There are some quality stalk and slash sequences. Most notable is one victim's unpleasant surprise in a garbage dumpster. We also get a hefty helping of cheese, mainly from the killer himself and Blaze's dopey son. The bit with the former dealing with angry bikers at a drive-in is gold. Overall, I was entertained, but it's not exactly good.

Oct. 10

7: Satan's School for Girls (1973) [Youtube] - following her sister's mysterious suicide, a young woman enrolls herself in the girl's college she was attending to investigate what really happened. This 70's telefilm can sort of be looked at as an earlier, far less extravagant version of Suspiria. After a strong opening, emphasis is firmly placed on the investigation aspect. We get a good cast, as was often the case in these old TV efforts. Pamela Franklin, so good in And Soon the Darkness and Legend of Hell House, plays the lead role of investigating sibling. Also present is the lovely Kate Jackson, as well as Cheryl Ladd under a different name. There are some good moments here, but a few too many scenes of exploring dark corridors slow the film considerably. The ending is predictable, but I suppose that's to be expected given the title. It's worth a look, but don't expect one of the better TV horrors.

Oct. 11

8: Catacombs (1988) [Netflix streaming] - taken off the shelf and retitled Curse IV: The Ultimate Sacrifice, this was actually made before the second and third entries in the unrelated series. This one deals with a possessed man who was sealed in the walls of an old monastery 400 years ago. Fast-forward to the present and a young teacher's arrival to the monastery somehow frees the demon from it's prison. I'm a fan of the other three film in the Curse "series", and while I enjoyed this one to an extent, it's easily the weakest of the four. The film boasts an exciting opening sequence, but things get bogged down when we move to the present. Of the cast, Laura Schaefer is certainly attractive, but the only good performance here is that of Jeremy West as the strict Brother Marinus. Atmosphere is also solid, Pino Donaggio contributes a typically good score and there's a really effective bit with a possessed statue towards the end. This scene alone is worth seeing the film for. On the other hand, the film would benefit from a different actor in the hero role. The guy they chose annoyed me, and so did the bedridden priest who goes on and on about nonsense. His character should've been omitted entirely. I also can't believe that an obvious continuity error was allowed to remain during the scene where Schaefer walks in on the monks having dinner. A mixed bag.

9: Panga (1991) [Netflix streaming] - an American bride's sister is visiting her and her sugar plantation owning husband in South Africa. While out one afternoon, the sister disrupts a native tribe's voodoo ceremony in an attempt to keep them from sacrificing a goat. As a result, a witch doctor puts a curse on them. It isn't long before a demon from the sea is stalking the family and anyone else they know. Originally titled Panga, this is also known as Curse III: Blood Sacrifice. I caught this on MGM-HD last October, but couldn't resist making a Curse double-feature when I saw it available for streaming. I actually enjoyed it even more this time around, perhaps because I wasn't so tired. I also have to say that while I found Jenilee Harrison quite attractive last time, I was really taken aback by how stunning she is during this re-watch. The African locations make for nice eye candy and we get Christopher Lee in a secondary role as a doctor who may be involved in the killings. The score for this film is rather odd, but you can't deny that it's catchy. It was stuck in my head for a good day afterward. Speaking of odd, there's a neat sequence where a character is burned alive after he's caught spying on the main characters from a sugar cane field. You would have to see the scene to realize how bizarre it really is.

Oct. 13

10: Doppelganger (1993) [VHS] - what the hell? Really odd film with Drew Barrymore playing a woman who believes her doppelganger is going around wreaking havoc. This is one nonsensical movie. The climax makes no sense.
Spoiler:
I mean, half the characters we meet are all the same guy wearing masks? And then there's the big split... Yeah. I have no idea if there actually was a doppelganger or what, and if there wasn't, did the crazy guy with the masks screw Barrymore's roommate on the kitchen floor? How would that work?
Now, I'm not going to say I hated this. I was very entertained just witnessing all the weirdness, stupidity and laughable dialogue unfold. It was almost surreal at times. Also, the scene where the roommate is accosted by the supposed FBI agent is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a long, long time. I was laughing out loud at how awful an actor Dan Shor was. Anyway, I'm not sure what they were thinking, but it sure was amusing. I'd watch this again over all the other crap Barrymore has been in. Those Adam Sandler flicks? Ugh!

Oct. 15

11: Lost Things (2003) [DVD] - four teens head to a secluded beach for a fun weekend, but the trip turns into a nightmare. This unknown Australian gem is seriously eerie throughout. Like Long Weekend before it, this film milks it's lonely beach setting to create a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. The storyline isn't exactly original, nor is the ending hard to pick up on, but the film goes about things in it's own unique way and winds up being an oppressive, enigmatic experience despite mining familiar territory. Most intriguing were the bizarre time anomalies and the question of what the beach, complete with rods sticking up out of the sand, truly is. Adding to the mood is an otherworldly score that again reminded me of Long Weekend, more specifically the cries of the sea cow. The score here sounds strikingly similar. The journey to the film's conclusion, where the double entendre of the title becomes apparent, is a compelling one. Some may be let down in the end, but there's enough going on even after the revelation for me to feel otherwise.

Oct. 17

12: Something Evil (1972) [Youtube] - a married couple and their two children move into an old country estate in rural Pennsylvania. The father spends most of his time working in NYC, but his wife stays home tending to the kids and coming up with various art designs. It isn't long before she's plagued by bizarre happenings, and while her husband is disbelieving, she comes to the conclusion that a devil is haunting the estate. This TV movie was Steven Spielberg's follow-up to Duel. While nowhere near that film's level, it is a reasonably effective little haunting yarn. The late Sandy Dennis carries the picture with her frantic, on edge performance. Ralph Bellamy of Rosemary's Baby is on the right side of the occult this time as a friendly neighbor who supplies Dennis with info on devils and protection from evil. The haunting is predominately low-key, though it occasionally moves into more pronounced territory when attacking others and even causing a fatal car accident. The creepiest scenes involve the sounds of a baby crying in the still country night and Dennis desperately trying to find out where the cries are emenating from. What she eventually finds makes for a rather disturbing visual. As a whole, there's nothing particularly remarkable here, but it all works just fine.

Oct. 18

13: Blood and Lace (1971) [Netflix streaming] - after her whore of a mother is murdered by a hammer-wielding nutjob, teen Ellie Masters is sent to live at the rural Deere Orphanage. She immediately begins plotting her getaway, as she wishes to track down the father she never knew. What she doesn't realize is that Mrs. Deere and her handyman, Tom Kredge, won't let anyone leave under any circumstances. If it comes down to murder, so be it. As she deals with this sadistic twosome, Ellie also realizes that she's being stalked by a masked creep with a claw hammer. Often referred to as the sickest PG film ever, I had wanted to see this for years. When I finally happened upon a tape, I was disappointed when I quickly came to the realization that it was a cut print. The opening hammer murder wasn't as explicit as I'd heard, and the scene where Bunch seduces Walter in the barn was really chopped up. Thankfully, not only does this print on Netflix look incredible, but it's also fully intact. This is such a great, truly warped little nasty. The twists just keep on coming, getting sicker and more twisted as the film goes on. The ending is a real kick in the balls. Gloria Grahame and Len Lesser own the film as the pair of crazies who will get those welfare checks at any cost. Melody Patterson is an arrogant bitch as Ellie, so I never felt much remorse for her. Blood and Lace is pure, untarnished nihilism on film. There's nary a sympathetic character in sight as the sleaze and melodrama run rampant. One also has to wonder if Wes Craven was inspired by this film's masked freak when he came up with the look of Freddy. The only thing I don't care for here is the music. It's overwrought in several places where something more subdued would have added to the overall effect.

14: The Initiation of Sarah (1978) [Netflix streaming] - timid Sarah and her popular stepsister, Patty, are pledging sororities at their new college. Patty gets into the most celebrated sorority on campus, but Sarah is only accepted by the least prominent. It doesn't help that Patty's new sorority sisters are elitist scum who do all that they can to make Sarah and her sorority mates miserable. Sarah has a power, though, which takes hold when she's angry. Her shady housemother, Ms. Hunter, is intent on helping her harness the power to use against their rival sorority. I actually like this made for TV Carrie cash-in more than De Palma's horror classic. A large part of that is due to the likability of Kay Lenz in the titular role and the connection I feel to her. I also love the storyline centered around sororities, hazing and campus rivalry. Throw in Shelley Winters as Ms. Hunter, who views her sorority as more of a cult, Morgan Fairchild as the queen bitch and Mia Farrow's sister, Tisa, and you've got quite the cast. Honestly, this doesn't even feel like a TV film. It had been a while since my last viewing, but as I sat watching my Netflix stream, I was taken with how it never once struck me as something made for television. There was even an absence of the typical fadeouts for commercials. This is much more than just a Carrie copycat. The characters have real depth, there's a solid message about one's own self-image, the lush photography is terrific and the story leaning towards the occult makes for a unique take. I do love De Palma's film, but I also love that it inspired something like this. The Spell, on the other hand, not so much.

15: The Pit and the Pendulum (1991) [Netflix streaming] - finally caught up to this after wanting to see it for years. I would have seen it much sooner had the DVD not been OOP. During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, the Grand Inquisitor, Torquemada, rules with an iron fist. If he accuses someone of being in league with the devil, they're tortured and often burned alive. A baker's wife soon falls victim to such an accusation when she stupidly interrupts the whipping of a young boy. The baker tries to free her as Torquemada begins having feelings for the woman he declared a witch. Stuart Gordon's take on the Edgar Allen Poe tale is sick fun. Lance Henriksen gives a commanding performance as Torquemada. He absolutely rules the film much like his character rules Toledo. Jeffrey Combs and Oliver Reed are also on hand in smaller roles. The opening sequence is the film's best. Things sorta' die down after that, never quite reaching that kind of off the wall energy again, but it's still an enjoyable effort overall. The ending is nothing special.

Oct. 21

16: The Redeemer (1978) [DVD] - this interesting curiosity happens to be one of my absolute favorite slasher films. In fact, only 1974's Black Christmas (which is also my favorite horror film in general) beats it. Released mere months before Carpenter's Halloween would kick-start the genre, it's an extremely eerie picture. There's a sense of the foreboding here that is more prevalent than in most horror films I've seen, let alone slashers. For the uninitiated, it's about a mysterious morality killer who tricks a group of "undesirables" into attending a fake high school reunion, only to pick them off once they get there. If you think this sounds a bit like Slaughter High, you'd be right. This came first, and it's religious subtext alone makes it far more intriguing. The six so-called degenerates include a lawyer, a gay actor, a lesbian, a rich snob, a cute girl who takes pride in her appearance, and a cocky former football jock with gluttonous tendencies. The Redeemer himself comes off as a little over the top at times (the scene in the auditorium for instance), but this actually works in the character's favor, as it really makes him seem like an absolute lunatic. Indeed, the Redeemer is a very creepy individual. Throughout the film, he dons many different costumes (as the Terror Train killer did a few years later), each one representing an aspect of each victim's life. These costumes can be unsettling, and they really add to the film's effectiveness. Perhaps the creepiest scene in the entire movie is when the lesbian is yelling for a man to let them out of the school, and that man turns out to be the Redeemer dressed up as the Grim Reaper. He proceeds to pound on the bars with his scythe, toying with her. This is a bleak, dread-inducing slasher that never has been regarded all that highly. Personally, I think it's easily one of the best films of it's kind. Too bad the DVD transfer is of such poor, choppy quality that it makes the film come off as being more disjointed than it actually is.

17: Paranormal Activity 2 [Cleburne Cinemark 6] - a sequel to the outstanding Paranormal Activity certainly wasn't needed, and upon first hearing about it, I wasn't even sure if I'd see it. Well, I was clearly unable to resist the temptation. Taking place before, during and after the events of Oren Peli's original, this one follows Katie's sister, Kristi, and her family being tormented by the same demon that was after Katie and Micah in the first. Despite what many reviews are saying, definitely not as good as the first one. Now, there are some effective scenes which I won't spoil here. However, what they try to do here creates plot holes within the first film, and I didn't care for where this one tried taking the story of the first either. There are also far too many jump scares this time around. That said, looking at this one as strictly non-canon, it's solid enough. Still, the only thing this has over the first is Katie in a bikini... Wow!

Oct. 23

18: Wrong Turn (2003) [Fox 4 DFW] - a group of twenty-somethings are hunted by deformed hillbillies after a wreck strands them on a rural West Virginia road. I hadn't watched this one in many years despite the DVD being in my collection. I did, however, see the awful sequel a while back and ignored the third. This wasn't as entertaining as I remembered, but it's still decent enough. The locations and the lovely Emmanuelle Chriqui are the main draws. The carnage on display is typical, but fun.

Oct. 25

19: Jaws of Satan (1981) [Netflix streaming] - cheeseball flick in which the devil takes the form of a king cobra and begins stalking a priest. During the second snake attack, there's clearly a pane of glass between the serpent and it's victim. The relationship between the lead girl and her snake expert love interest is laughable, and neither of them can act worth a lick. At one point, the former is trapped on her bed by a large snake. She calls the snake expert, who is at a motel down the road, and he gets there to help her before the snake does anything despite having lots of time. We also get a young Christina Applegate, who was quite the ugly kid.

20: Monster Dog (1984) [Netflix streaming] - speaking of cheeseball, we also have this little movie from the director of Troll 2. Alice Cooper stars as a rock star who takes his crew back to the old castle he grew up in for the shooting of a music video. Unfortunately for the group, someone among them appears to be some sort of monster dog. This is all over the map with several bits of unintentional humor. The dubbing, for one, is quite amusing. So is the opening music video, and don't even get me started on the posse that shows up midway through or the ridiculous dream sequence that goes for much too long. On the upside, we do get a fair helping of gore, the castle is a fun setting and there are plenty of dogs on display. What can I say? I'm a dog lover.

21: Dark Tower (1987) [Netflix streaming] - a newly built office building in Spain is plagued by a series of fatal accidents seemingly caused by a murderous presence. Freddie Francis was the original director on this film, but problems led to Shock Waves director, Ken Weiderhorn, taking over. Neither took credit for the film, but it's not bad. Michael Moriarty stars as a company man investigating the deaths and Jenny Agutter is on hand as the building's chief architect. The most entertaining character is that of a paranormal investigator who Moriarty contacts midway through. The big reveal behind the haunting is predictable, and the climax feels like it would be more at home in a Tales from the Crypt episode. The story doesn't have a lot of meat to it.

Oct. 28

22: Community "Epidemiology 101" (2010) [NBC 5] {WILDCARD} - the college Halloween party is overtaken by zombies. I love this show, and this was one of the best episodes yet. I can't believe they actually had zombies in the show and kept it as canon rather than a one-off episode like so many other shows do for such specials. Too cool!

Oct. 31

23: The Pyx (1973) [DVD] - Karen Black plays a hooker who gets thrown from the roof of a building, and Christopher Plummer is the detective who must uncover who was behind it. This Canadian gem is criminally overlooked. It starts with Black's fall and then goes back and forth between her life leading up to it and Plummer's investigation. Both stories are intriguing, and the combination of the two gives the film a mournful atmosphere. The sense of regret and overall sadness is predominant throughout, never letting up. Even after the credits roll, the feeling remains. It's a hard-hitting piece of work. Is it graphic? Not really. It garners it's power from mood and character. Black has rarely been better than she is here, and Plummer also excels, especially in his final scene. The mystery at the core of the film comes to a most satisfying conclusion, the scene detailing Black's fate being the best of the picture. Well, it and the concluding scene are both fantastic. The film's alternate title spoils the mystery.

24: Lisa (1990) [Netflix streaming] - Lisa (Staci Keanan) is 14 and boy-crazy, but her overprotective single mother refuses to let her date until she turns 16. While out getting groceries one night, Lisa literally runs into Richard and instantly develops a crush on the much older man. She uses sneaky tactics to get his phone number and begins calling him repeatedly, engaging in seductive conversations without revealing her identity. What Lisa doesn't know is that Richard is a serial killer who was leaving the scene of his latest crime when she bumped into him. Director Gary Sherman's output has always been largely ignored. Even Dead & Buried, which is one of my absolute favorite horror films, wasn't widely known for the longest time. The film contains some strong performances. Staci Keanan carries the picture. She is infinitely charming with a quick wit and my kind of quirkiness. Cheryl Ladd is well-cast as Katherine, and her chemistry with Keanan is palpable. Short of casting Jordan Ladd herself in the titular role, I don't think we could have seen a more believable mother and daughter pairing. D.W. Moffet makes for an interesting maniac. Rich and suave, he could easily get women, but he would rather slaughter them. Dubbed the "Candlelight Killer" by the press, he leaves messages on his victims' answering machines warning them of what he's about to do before he does it. We get some solid suspense here, particularly during a scene where Lisa finds herself stuck in Richard's vehicle. It's made worse by the fact that she doesn't know just how bad it would be if he found her. The film's climax is also tense and surprisingly violent. We also get an amusing bit, be it intentional or unintentional, where Richard uses Katherine to head-butt her own daughter. I will say that the film falters a bit towards the end, mainly due to a poor decision made by one of the characters. This in turn makes for a predictable finale. I also thought that the look of the film wasn't as impressive as it could have been, especially taking into account the eerie, fog-drenched photography of "Dead & Buried". Joe Renzetti's score sort of made up for the generic look, being moody whereas the atmosphere wasn't. In the end, this is a worthwhile effort thanks in large part to the performances on display. It's a well-acted film, and the suspense benefits as a result.

25: Spellcaster (1992) [Netflix streaming] - a group of people win a trip to a castle where they'll be filmed as they search for a million dollar check. Once there, they begin falling victim to various creatures conjured up by the castle's owner. This is another film that wasn't as fun as I remembered. There's not much to it, and a few bits don't make sense in hindsight. It's still an enjoyable effort, though. The John Carl Buechler creature effects are solid, and the female half of the cast is made up of some pretty attractive women, not the least of which is a young Gail O'Grady.

26: Puppet Master II (1990) [Netflix streaming] - the puppets resurrect Toulon and target the paranormal researchers who have set up shop in the Bodega Bay hotel. There's also a new puppet, the flame-throwing Torch. These films are nothing great, but the first five are plenty fun. After the fifth, they go to pure shit. This one holds a special place in my heart since Torch is my favorite of the puppets. He sees a fair amount of action here, even frying an unruly kid at one point. The nods to The Invisible Man with the Toulon character are nice, and one of my favorite horror girls, Charlie Spradling, stars as one of the researchers. That said, the relationship between the two leads is a joke. They fall for each other in less than a day. We also get a really stupid ending.

27: The Evictors (1979) [Netflix streaming] - a couple moves into a new house, but they are soon menaced by a prowler who keeps showing up. Charles B. Pierce, the man behind The Town that Dreaded Sundown and The Legend of Boggy Creek, directed this outstanding mood piece. Jessica Harper and Michael Parks play the married couple, and both are superb. It was great seeing the lovely Harper in another horror film. Vic Morrow is the real estate agent who sales them the house. He's fine, though his role isn't the largest despite his top billing. The slow-burning pace works brilliantly here. The 40's atmosphere and impact of World War II are also well-realized. Some effective sepia-toned flashbacks further the mood, as do the hushed nature of the townspeople in regard to the house's history and the lovely scope photography. There's one aspect of the story that was easily predicted by me, but others not so much. This is one of the true unsung gems of the 70's. I'm glad that I picked such a winner to end the challenge with. Easily my favorite first time viewing of October, and my favorite in quite a good while, too. The thought of this either not getting a release or being relegated to shitty MOD DVD-R disgusts me to the core.

Goal was 108.... Proud to say I kicked ass compared to last year.

First time views: 71

Best first time view: Going to Pieces is probably my tops... a nice little slasher documentary. Honorable Mentions: The Call of Cthulu, [rec]2, Eyes Without a Face, and The Wicker Man.

Worst first time view: It's a tough call between The Last Winter and The Last Horror Movie. Gonna have to go for The Last Horror Movie though... It bored me to tears. Daughters of Satan gets an dishonorable mention, but hey, it had Tom Selleck!

I've also, got to say... I don't think there's any way possible (short of me being unemployed in October) that I could beat this goal next year. I think it might be time to retire. lol I don't see how some of you guys have done over 200 in previous years.

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

Word, yo.

October 1st

1. The Manitou....2.4/5, in honor of Tony Curtis, a few creepy scenes but the script writer should be shot.
2. Diagnosis Death....1.5/5, lame all around, but one of the nicest flashbacks I've ever seen.
3. Orphan....2.5, very irritating, but a last minute twist almost saves it

October 2nd

Epic Fail

October 3rd

4. Killer Movie...2/5
5. Dead Of Winter...1.5/5
6. Bad Reputation...3.5/5, very surprising and well done

Reserved. Hoping for at least one movie per day, with a grand finale on Halloween!

Because I am participating in other similar movie challenges / marathons, I decided to keep a list on Google Docs. Find the link in my signature.

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

2006 = 36 movies
2007 = 50 movies
2008 = 31 movies
2009 = 52 movies
2010 = 20 movies --> My weakest showing - but given how busy I've been this year, that's no surprise.

October 2, 2010
--

October 3, 2010
1. Growth (2009) --> 3/5 Yikes! 3 days in and this is only my first film. Oh well, there could be much more worse ways of starting off than this parasitic creature feature.

October 4, 2010
--

October 5, 2010

October 6, 2010
2. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) --> 4/5 I've always liked this slasher film.

October 7, 2010
--

October 8, 2010
3. The Corpse Vanishes (1942) --> 3/5 A silly but fun Bela Lugosi Poverty Row horror flick.

October 9, 2010
4. My Soul To Take (2010) --> 3/5 Wes Craven in 3D. 'Nuff said!

October 14, 2010
--

October 15, 2010
6. You'll Find Out (1940) --> 3/5 Uneven horror comedy - made appealing by the great trio of Karloff, Lugosi, and Lorre!

October 16, 2010
7. Lake Placid 3 (2010) --> 2/5 SyFy Channel sequel that treads very familiar creature feature territory.
8. White Zombie (1932) --> 4/5 Enjoyable Bela Lugosi thriller from early in his sound career.

October 17, 2010
9. Stand by Me (1986) --> 4/5 Stephen King's "The Body" served as the inspiration for this.

October 18, 2010
10. Zombies on Broadway (1945) --> 2/5 Lame 1940's horror comedy; Bela Lugosi and Sheldon Leonard are about the only good things about it.

October 19, 2010
11. The Walking Dead (1936) --> 4/5 Atmospheric supernatural revenge tale with Boris Karloff in his prime!

October 20, 2010
12. Scared to Death (1947) --> 3/5 The fact that it's the only color film Bela Lugosi made is enough of a curiosity to make this interesting.

October 21, 2010
13. Spooks Run Wild (1941) --> 3/5 Another Lugosi curiosity: a horror comedy pairing with the East Side Kids.

October 22, 2010
14. The Black Cat (1934) --> 4/5 Fantastic pairing of Lugosi and Karloff!
15. The Raven (1935) --> 3/5 Another good pairing of Lugosi and Karloff.
16. It Came From Outer Space (1953) --> 3/5 Good, if slow, Universal sci-fi horror from the 1950's, based on a story by Ray Bradbury.
17. This Island Earth (1955) --> 3/5 Another good Universal sci-fi horror from the 1950's, this time in color.

October 27, 2010
--

October 28, 2010
--

October 29, 2010
18. The Gorilla (1939) --> 3/5 Bela Lugosi & Ritz Brothers horror comedy that's funnier than it has any right to be.

October 30, 2010
19. Saw 3D (2010) --> 3/5 Billed as "the final chapter." Yeah, right.

October 31, 2010
20. Under the Mountain (2009) --> 3/5 Too dense adaptation of the Maurice Gee novel.

Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

1. +Let the Right One In+ (2008) 115 min. More coming of age story than vampire story, it is an unusual take on both genres that succeeds at both. The pace is slow, but the violence is fierce when it happens.
2. Tales From the Crypt: +Report From the Grave+ (1996) An experiment to contact a dead serial killer goes wrong, in a story reminiscent of H. P. Lovecraft's works./+Confession+ (1996) Predictable story of an ace police detective interrogating a cocky suspect in a serial killing case, redeemed by excellent performances by Ciaran Hinds as the detective and Eddie Izzard as the suspect. /+Kidnapper+(1996) A disturbed man takes in a pregnant woman, but finds the baby gets in the way. Steve Coogan takes his character from slow-witted to deranged, in the process obscuring a plot twist./+Smoke Wrings+ (1996) 25 min. Story of cut-throat competition in an advertising agency has a Twilight Zone feel, with Ute Lemperer as a sexy boss and Daniel Craig as a cocky outsider on the rise.
3. The Thing From Another World (1951) 87 min. Classic tale of soldiers and scientists in an arctic research post battling a powerful alien. One of the best horror and sci-fi movies of the 1950s.
4. The Thing (1982) 108 min. This remake returns to the original short story that the 1951 classic was based on for inspiration, and surpisingly improves upon its predecessor. The shape-shifting abilities of the alien create an overwhelming atmosphere of paranoia, when odd behavior can be the result of fear or of contamination.
5. +Village of the Damned+ (1960) 77 min. Strange group of children born months after a mysterious event in an English village threaten its people and perhaps the world. Creepy sci-fi horror.
6. +The Orphanage+ (2007) 106 min. A family moves into the site of the orphanage where the wife spent part of her childhood, causing her to become obsessed with the connection between strange events in the past and a tragic mystery in the present. Very spooky.
7. +Children of the Damned+ (1964) 89 min. British scientists and world governments pursue conflicting strategies for dealing with a group of six strange children from different nations. The source of the threat is reversed from its predecessor, as militarism and the arms race are exposed.
8. + Blood of the Vampire+ (1958) 85 min. Mad scientist experiments on prisoners in an attempt to cure his blood disorder. Unusual romantic horror movie set in 18th century England.
9. +The Black Torment+ (1964) 86 min. Predictable, well made gothic romance with aristocrat and his new bride menaced by mysterious events related to family secrets and the death of his first wife.
10. +The Adult Version of Jekyll and Hyde+ (1972) 91 min. Ugly doctor obtain's Dr. Jekyll's notebook and creates a potion that transforms him into a beautiful, murderous blonde. Movie misses the point of the story, since both personalities are equally evil. The true horror in this awful soft-core roughie is in the acting, effects and direction.
11. +The Monster Walks+ (1932) 60 min. Heiress returning to family home after her father's death faces an unknown menace. Typical example of the old dark house mystery genre.
12. The Vampire Bat (1933) 63 min. Strange killings arouse superstitious fears in German town. The strong cast and able direction enhance a standard B horror movie.
13. +The Mystery of the Wax Museum+ (1933) 77 min. How are the wax museum's sculptures so life-like? Lionel Atwill is very good as the sculptor injured in a fire at his previous museum, and Fay Wray really can scream.
14. +Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things+ (1973) 87 min. Theater group try to raise the dead, wish they hadn't. Romero-influenced zombie movie falls far short of Night of the Living Dead.
15. +Dead of Night+ (1974) 88 min. Soldier killed in Vietnam returns to his family changed. Some of the horrors that the Vietnam War brought home to American society are metaphorically transformed into literal horror.
16. Masters of Horror: +Homecoming+ (2005) 59 min. The dead soldiers of our current wars return to vote. George Romero and Bob Clark meet satire on the cynicism of our electoral politics.
17. The Invisible Man (1933) 71 min. Scientist discovers formula for invisibility, then struggles to reverse the process. Classic sci-fi horror.
18. The Invisible Man Returns (1940) 81 min. Mine owner escapes execution using the formula provided by a descendant of Dr. Griffin and tries to prove his innocence. The sequel almost matches the original.
19. Tim Burton : +Vincent+ (1982) 6 min. A poem about a boy who idolizes Vincent Price. A lot of fun./+Frankenweenie+ (1984) 30 min.//Stories of Robert W. Chambers: +Tupilak+ (2002) 13 min./+The King in Yellow+ (2003) 6 min. //Misty Mundae & Kate Bordeaux: Voodoun Blues (2004) 5 min./Sour Milk (2003) 6 min./Night of the Whorror Hoppers (2002) 3 min.//Elvire: +Ghoultown-Mistress of the Dark+ (2009) 5 min./Coors Light Commercial 1 min./+Elvira-Haunted House+ 4 min.//David Lynch: +Six Figures Getting Sick+ (1966) 4 min./+The Alphabet+ (1968) 4 min.
20. The She-Creature (1956) 77 min. Hypnotist brings up ancient monster from the unconscious mind of his subject. The stiff performance by Chester Morris as the apparent charlatan who actually does what he says he is doing works surprisingly well.
21. The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954) 79 min. Scientists try to capture a creature which has survived in a remote lagoon in the Amazon since prehistoric times. Julia Adams is one of the most beautiful damsels in distress ever, and the camera work, apparently planned for the 3D effects, conveys a sense of menace in 2D through frequent use of point of view shots.
22. +May+ (2002) 94 min. Quirky horror comedy with an awkward, misfit young woman seeking a romantic partner, finding that she likes only parts of her prospects, and coming up with an unusual solution to this problem.
23. Masters of Horror: +Sick Girl+ (2006) 59 min. Bug-obsessed lesbians fall in love, but their relationship develops in an unusual direction. Fun horror comedy with a message of tolerance.
24. +The Woods+ (2006) 91 min. Rebellious girl is sent to an isolated boarding school where the teachers appear to have a strange interest in certain pupils. Scary atmosphere is undercut by a plot that seems over-familiar and a little vague.
25. +The Invisible Woman+ (1940) 72 min. Model takes up the offer of scientist to become invisible. The comic revenge plot and slightly risque jokes make for a lighter movie than its two predecessors.
26. +The Invisible Agent+ (1942) 81 min. Another descendant of Dr. Griffin uses his formula to go to Berlin to foil Axis sabotage plot against the U.S. Effective World War II propaganda movie features beautiful Ilona Massey as a double agent with questionable loyalties, but is marred by silly pranks by invisible man Jon Hall against Gestapo officers.
27. +The Invisible Man's Revenge+ (1944) 77 min. The last sequel is closest in tone to the original movie, as an explorer seeks revenge on his former partners, who cut him out of his share of the treasure that they found. It returns to the theme of a man becoming increasing alienated from humanity as a result of an invention which gives him tremendous power.
28. Werewolf of London (1935) 75 min. Botanist attacked by a werewolf in Tibet brings the curse to London. A classic horror movie that deserves to be better known.
29. +Dog Soldiers+ (2002) 105 min. English soldiers on a training exercise come under siege by Scottish werewolves. Great horror action.
30. +She-Wolf of London+ (1946) 61 min. Savage attacks by a mad woman or a "wolf-woman" cause a young woman to fear that she is a victim of her family's curse. Very good mystery horror movie with beautiful June Lockhart as the young woman who fears what she may have done in the night.
31. +The Brute Man+ (1946) 59 min.
32. +The Descent+ (2005) 100 min.
33. +I Bury the Living+ (1958) 77 min.
34. +Scathed+ (1995) 41 min. Slow developing movie may qualify as horror by virtue of its gore near the end and its self-conscious surrealism, but it takes a long time to build up to a minor joke.
35. +Plague Town+ (2008) 85 min.
36. Tales From the Crypt: +Mournin' Mess+(1991) 25 min./+Dead Right+ (1990) 28 min./+'Til Death+ (1990) 26 min./+Mute Witness to Murder+ (1990) 26 min.
37. Frankenstein (1931) 70 min.
38. Bride of Frankenstein (1935) 74 min.
39. Son of Frankenstein (1939) 99 min.
40. The Wolf Man (1941) 70 min.

42. +Ginger Snaps+ (2000) 108 min.
43. +Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed+ (2004) 94 min.
44. +Trick 'r Treat+(2007) 82 min./+Season's Greetings+ (1996) 4 min.
45. Films to Keep You Awake: +The Christmas Tale+ (2005) 75 min.
46. Little Shop of Horrors (1960) 72 min.
