Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

I've been looking forward to this for months. I'm going to set my goal at 50 again this year, after finishing with a heartbreaking 49 last year.

I wanted to take part last year but couldn't. This year I want to take part and watch at least 31. I'm also in a DVD buying mood. Uh...any essentials to pick up?

I played the last 2 years, started out strong for the first week, with about a flick a day... and then it all kinda had a downfall from there.

Decided to satisfy my horror withdrawals by beginning to watch Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy. Really well done documentary.

Ahhh... Thanks for reminding me. I bought that after last year's challenge and will have to put that on my list. I plan on watching that and the Halloween documentaries this year.

I also thought I'd chime in that I really enjoy seeing this challenge expand to include shows and commentaries. I know for myself, I don't really have ~2 uninterrupted hours on weekdays to sit down and watch a movie, so things like Tales from the Crypt will be perfect for an after work viewing. As for commentaries, I've always put them on my list anyways (with bullets) so it will be nice to have those count. It is rare that you find a real dud and sometimes the commentary is better than the movie! I feel a bit lost when I am actually caught up on my commentaries.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

I'm posting this now since it's fresh in my mind...

- You may have noticed that some of the prize giveaways this year will be done through random trivia questions. Well, in the interest of fairness, they'll be held during the weekend since obviously not everyone has access to DVDTalk at the workplace. And I'll make an effort to always give a heads up a day in advance.

- Be getting your ideas ready for the 31 Days Subset and the checklist because we'll be doing that soon.

- I have this year's Theme Nights near completion and it'll probably be up within a couple of days. Even if you have no desire in participating whatsoever, you should still check it out because there's 43 links worth of good info attached.

That's all I can recall for now.

I was always too busy to join this challenge last year, but seeing how I was laid off this year I expect to have a lot of free time on my hands. My personal goal will be 62 (figuring 2 titles per day - assuming I can dig up enough horror flicks from storage). Let the fun begin!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

In looking over TCM's list of horror titles for October I see both the 1923 and 1939 versions of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"! Seriously?!? Horror?!?

Melodrama/Romantic Drama/Unrequited Love/Historical Drama sure... but horror? I don't see it unless it's solely based on the visage of the grotesquely deformed Quasimodo.

In spite of that faux pas on the part of TCM, I'm in! I may even watch "Hunchback", in spite of my reservations as to its' inclusion, as it's on their list and it's one of my all-time favorite films.

I had lots of fun with the SF challenge and have been holding off watching any horror titles in anticipation! Current number in unwatched pile = 65+

Theater 80/St. Marks used to classify The Man Who Laughs, which is also based on a Victor Hugo novel, as grotesque, but that's a limited and obscure genre, so horror seems close enough. Actually, the abuse of Quasimodo might make it a horror movie. Neither version dwells on the torture, but they don't shy away from showing it either. Sometimes the monsters aren't the ones with the physical deformities.

I'll never come close to 100; baseball is the only sport I follow and I gorge on the post-season (and for once, it looks like my Reds will actually be part of it!). But I'm hoping to at least use this challenge as impetus to whittle down the Unwatched Pile...which isn't being given so much as a second glance this month as I try my hand at the Criterion Challenge.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

I'm in again. It's the main thing that gets me active on the forum anymore, but that it something I'm trying to change and show up more. I actually tried holding off from horror for most of the year since the last challenge just for this one, but a string of horrible luck made go back and go on my own horror super-challenge for the rest of the year, which I've been keeping track of on my blog. To make the October portion special, I've been holding off on any movie from the 80's or the 90's that feels like I would have watched it on tv in my childhood. I'm looking forward to recreating that warm feeling I had watching all of these movies on TBS, TNT, and USA as the leaves are falling and the cold creeps in.

I'm actually sitting this year out. I've been involved in a personal dvd-related challenge all year so I'm going to continue with that.

I'm with you, MinLShaw. Though it looks like I'll have more time to devote to the horror challenge this year.

We'll miss you, Ed. Perhaps you've mentioned it elsewhere and I missed it--what's the personal challenge you're doing? Not that it's any of my business...

Not a problem. It did come up briefly in a thread here but I'll be damned if I can find it. Essentially, what I'm doing is trying to watch one previously unwatched dvd for each day of the year. I know that I could throw horror into the mix but I don't want to handcuff myself to one genre. This is more of a leisurely thing for me. I've made it this far so I'm gonna finish it up.

I will still be here looking on from the sidelines.

Excited for this. Last year I cleared 50 but never managed to finish the expanded checklist.

Just wanted to throw in a reminder, last year I posted this list: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/56...ml#post9804300
of potential changes to the expanded list, for discussion, if you were interested in implementing any of these ideas.
