Code Red is going under next year, so it probably won't be them.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

Finally got around to getting my list ready so I'm set to go tonight. I kept it pretty much the same as last year since I liked how it looked but I'm going to give my thoughts on the movies in a way that's new to me for a little experimentation. I'm hoping to do better than last year but my wife is having surgery to remove a cancerous tumor next week and I'm going to film my senior thesis film towards the end of the month so those are two big potential stumbling blocks that I have no idea how much time they'll need. But, if nothing else, I know it's going to be fun as always.

I'm starting with the Wolfman right now. I probably would have preferred something else but my fiance really wanted to watch it.

"One, two, Freddy's coming for you..."

Thought I'd kick things off this year with a little Nightmare on Elm Street!

I went against my initial plan of starting with Sleepaway Camp and revisited The Dead Next Door for the first time in 5 years (2nd viewing) and it is still awful. Luckily its only 78 minutes (and 8 of that is the closing credits)

I really enjoyed that one when I watched it earlier this year for the first time. I might even give it a re-watch for the challenge. There is always room for more Bava

Indeed, I'm about to start my second film, Hatchet for the Honeymoon and this reminded me to order the Bava Box Set's to watch this month.

I still have 2 or 3 in the second box to watch to finish them up. I should make a point of doing that sometime this month.

I did, too, but the current version...should have stuck with the original.

* * *

I 'm going to try to post reviews for the first time. May not do every film I watch but will attempt at least a spoiler free blurb.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

Finally watched Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), which I'd wanted to see since its theatrical release. It had a Laser Disc release in the Criterion Collection, so it was a nice double-dip segue from that challenge to this. On the whole, I liked it. It feels like an early 90s movie, right down to the ballad over the end credits. The first half hewed pretty closely to the source material and other adaptations I've seen; then it became a bit adventuresome. Kudos for playing up the eroticism, always a significant element of the "Dracula" mythology. I could have done without some of the jerky, first-person cinematography, though.

Also, Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins seemed to each affect different accents at various times; I can only assume that those sequences were shot together, and their voice work changed over the course of the production subtly enough no one really caught it. There are a couple times where Oldman sounds like his villain from The Fifth Element, which was really distracting.

Time Warner digital cable has an interesting synopsis of TCMHD's showing of "Dracula, Prince of Darkness":
Vampire count (Christopher Lee) bites women, falls on something sharp.
Oh, that clumsy Count Dracula!

Started a little after midnight with a viewing of The Evil Dead, got it on BD last week but have been holding off until October started. Strong start!

I ordered the Slumber Party Massacre collection today with a "guaranteed release date delivery" from Amazon. Hopefully I actually get it on Tuesday, I love the first movie!

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

The wife and I got through the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time. I had seen most of the movie in chunks many times over but this was the first time I actually sat down and watched it from start to finish. I really liked it but I don't think it has as much of an effect on me just because I've heard so many people talk about it and deconstruct it.

We also watched the sequel which was the second time I viewed it. I find it much more enjoyable than the original, but it really is a completely different type of horror movie. There is one stretch that feels like it's dragging a little but other than that, it's fairly awesome the whole way through. I love the beginning scene on the bridge. Just amazing.

Then my wife wasn't feeling so good so we quit for the night but I'm hoping to get up early enough to get a good chunk under our belt, one of the very few benefits of being recently unemployed I guess. Overall, we had a pretty great opening night.
