Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
I haven't read this acknowledged anywhere, so I want to make sure it is known: The audio commentary is out of sync on the Piranha DVD. It is slightly delayed, so often the actors' dialogue isn't heard until after they close their mouths. (I own the SD, I don't know about the Blu-ray)
I emailed Shout Factory about this. To their credit, the reply was quick, but this is a defect we're stuck with: This commentary was on a previous release and we attempted to match it to our new master. It’s often hard to synch audio from one master to another (or in this case match the audio from the previous DVD – so compressed audio - to our new master). The frame rate is probably different. I don’t think we’ll be going back to fix this because it could take hours and hours to try and match it and it will probably still go out of sych from time to time if the film element reels we used and the reels used for the previous transfer don’t match exactly……. And there is still the issue of the audio commentary coming from the previous disc having been compressed. We were unable to use the original commentary files on tape because they were old and stretched out so they were unusable. |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
:hscratch: Why would this matter? You're listening to it for the commentary, right?

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
i read this in the dedicated thread and still don't know what this means.

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
Add me to the confused list. You don't watch the people doing a commentary. Why would syncing be an issue?

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
The audio on the trailer in the special features (SD version) is WAY out of sync. (I didn't clock it, but it's easily 3 seconds off.)
Kinda ironic since the trailer starts off with an audio roll and clapper board. |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
I'm assuming the probelm exists on the blu-ray also, right?

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
So, you are saying the audio AND the commentary tracks are BOTH out of sync? Your analogy using Gremlins seems to suggest this.

It affects the quality of a scene-specific commentary, since the commentators are commenting on things as they happen.

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
Their explanation is fine for me. I'd rather have the commentary than not have it at all.
Personally, my memory stinks, but I think I can hold on for a few seconds and figure it out. |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
shout factory put a lot of time and money into these releases, even releasing the bulk of Corman titles on blu - if out of all their hard work, the only problem is an audio commentary that's a few seconds out of sync, i will take it.

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
Yeah, but we still want to know if the film's audio track and the commentary track are both out of sync. I can't imagine why both of those elements would be linked together so that they were both out of sync with the video.
Or maybe the commentary track features the director trying to recite all the lines from the movie ... Or .... Aww, fergit it ... |

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
Is the commentary out of sync or is it the actual movie dialogue ? This is very confusing.
|
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
I assumed that commentary tracks were a completely separate audio track. The movie volume drops when a commentator is speaking and rises again when there's a gap. If Shout only has access to the final finished commentary track, then when you're listening to the commentary audio, you'd also be getting the movie audio/dialogue from that earlier release. At least, that's how I read the OP's complaint.

:horse:
Okay, here's what I'm guessing: 1. The audio track on the non-commentary version of the film is fine. 2. The audio track on the commentary version of the film is out of sync with the video. 3. The commentary is in sync with the audio of the commentary version, which makes it out of sync with the video. Now I need pancakes. :hungry: |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
It seems I speak a language of confusion. Fortunately, I have interpreters:

Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
I'm assuming that the commentary starts in synch and then goes gradually out of synch, so that it's the worst at the end of the movie.
If so, what a BS response from Shout. At least they could have resynched the audio every 5 minutes or so, so that it didn't ever get really badly out of synch. The fact that the original commentary audio was unusable is not surprising. I've seen much more important assets neglected worse. |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
i watched the movie and played the commentary on and off and it was all good for me. didn't notice, didn't care, didn't give a shit. decent movie with an excellent presentation package. i'm happy.
**edit** i actually played this late last night with commentary and every scene i listened to was scene specific and actors' dialogue was spot on as well, so have no idea what this out of sync stuff is. maybe just your copy, LD? anyone else notice that the commentary was very much scene specific? |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
The Teague/Hirsh commentary on the Death Race 2000 Blu-ray is also out of sync. I didn't notice problems with the Corman/Woronov track though.
EDIT: Hirsh points out an out of sync line on the commentary, so perhaps it's the original audio that's off. |
Re: Piranha DVD Commentary OUT OF SYNC
I was looking at the Piranha DVD at Best Buy today and I noticed that the slipcover said 1.85:1, while the case said 1.78:1. The Blu-ray also says 1.78:1. So, which is it? And what is it supposed to be?
