UPDATE...
I'm not sure how the OP fared, as he never updated after the second day. I, on the other hand, have met my goal and then some. I finished 2010 having watched 450 dvds. I've been on the fence about it, but I'm going to give this personal challenge another whirl here in 2011.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

Good luck with that. 450 movies in a year is just a lot.. But about 1 and a 1/3rd titles a day.. so not unfathomable. 3 movies a day however is just a lot of time to be invested and I hope it doesn't interefere with regular life.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

Yeah, my pace was actually really good IMO. I had quite a few days where I didn't watch anything at all. Then, I'd follow that with a day off from work doing nothing but watching movies. I was out of work for a month last year, so that definitely aided my cause some. I'll sacrifice some movies for a year of good health, lol.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I fell behind on keeping track of what I did in November and December but I came in around 1000 by seeing what I checked for those two months at icheckmovies.

I figure I'll start tracking more stuff in my unwatched thread

I'm at 6 at the moment. Off to a fairly quick start, but it'll balance out soon enough.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I saw about 175 movies for the first time last year, including some stand-up comedy specials that I suppose shouldn't have counted. We streamed a lot of TV content in May (including all four seasons of My Name Is Earl and every episode available at the time of 30 Rock and The Office), which ate up movie time. My reading was way down from 2009, but still occupied a decent amount of my time. In any event, while I can see hitting the pace for 1000 movies in a year, I can't see it being enjoyable for me. For those who attempt it, I suggest using the Rank 'Em thread to track your progress. Also, if you're into blogging it could be interesting if you forgo the obligatory summary and instead denote the context of your viewing. Good luck!

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I watch 20-30 a month, it's not possible for me to do more then that.

So I guess I could get to about 300 or so a year.

The beauty of not doing it as a themed challenge is nice since you can switch genres at will. The only other thing I can add, from previous marathon viewings, is the bad movies seem even worse while the really good will give you a nice boost.

I'm going to keep track of what I watch as well...I think I can do at least 500 this year as I need to escape from my crappy life as much as possible right now...so far I have seen 7.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I'll try for it this year. Hell, I've got nothing else to do yet. My goal of 500 horror movies last year failed thanks to me having to finish up college but now I spend about 5 or 6 hours a day looking for work and the rest of my day's spent watching as many movies as I can. I'm using the Rank 'Em thread to keep track of them. I've seen about 14 now, not counting the 2 or 3 my son watched every day while I'm looking up job info.

I think this year I'll give a special focus on trying to see as many of the movies on the icheckmovies lists as I can.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I'm keeping track of what I'm watching this year, this first week of the year has been spent moving and settling in, I've only managed to watch 5 films, but I plan to try and tackle my unwatched movies as much as possible this year, I'd like to end the year with either watching or selling every unwatched film I have, I'd love to get to a normal person's level of buying a movie and watching it, not buying dozens of movies a month and trying to watch stuff you bought years ago also.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

My previous record from many years ago was 365 movies in a year, so it was my goal last year to break that record. I was happy to come out of 2010 with a total of 370.

My DVD collection has about 2100 titles, many of them still unwatched. Having a numbers goal motivated me to finally unwrap some DVDs I'd had for years. 2010's total was also boosted when I finally sold off the rest of my laserdiscs and forced myself to watch many beforehand. Throughout the year I would count up the totals to see if I was above or behind the final goal (April 1 to see if I were ¼ of the way there, etc). I began falling behind during a summer job, which prompted me to play catch-up.

The totals goal also helped me connect with some movies I'd been putting off. So 2010 was the year I discovered the "Ma and Pa Kettle" series was far better than I expected. Also that the "Charlie Chan" series includes some truly excellent movies. And that the TOHO monster films are very admirable when you watch the original Japanese versions.

For 2011 I'm looking only to break the new record, so 371 or more. For personal reasons I don't count TV shows at all, nor "commentary viewings."

1. Fight club - 5 star - Bluray

3. Oldboy - 4 star - DVD
4. The Goods - 3.5 star - DVD
5. Young Frankenstein - 4.5 star - DVD
6. The Hangover - 5 star - Bluray
7. Snatch - 4.5 star - Bluray
You got a long way to go. 993 movies and list hasn't been updated in over 5 months which means you need to watch around 142 movies a month.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I'm currently at 29. Last year, I managed to get in 53 in January. Not going to hit that this year. However, I had a 9 day vacation from work where my wife was recovering from surgery so all I did was watch movies.

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

There's probably no way I'll watch 1,000 movies this year (or any year). My main goal this year is to watch my entire "unwatched pile" which has taken over one wall of shelves (probably about 200 or so). These are just the ones that were bought but never watched, I still have 50 or so that I've never seen or would want to revisit at some point.

That said, I've only watched 23 movies this month and majority of them were first time viewings!

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

I know I'll never come close to 1000, but it's nice to have a lofty goal. I've only seen one new movie so far in 2011 (True Grit) because I've been concentrating on the TV on DVD* Challenge this month. I'm hopeful to hit movies hard with the Academy Awards Challenge and we'll see how it goes from there. I'm already counting on watching The Bridge on the River Kwai and Doctor Zhivago on Blu-ray, but having seen both several times before neither will count for this. Doesn't matter; I'm stoked about seeing these in HD!

EDIT: Setting up the formatting for my "Rank 'Em 2011" post I discovered that I haven't seen any first-time movies yet; True Grit was at the end of December!

Re: 1000 movies in a year(log)

It's been a couple of months since anyone has commented on their progress so I thought I'd bump the thread and see if anyone is hanging with this. I've decided I'm only counting first-time viewings, and that I'm excluding commentary tracks from my count total. I am, however, counting short films. I figure if I still get a check mark for it on I Check Movies and can rank it on Flickchart, then I should be able to count it toward my total. A couple nights ago I finally saw The Adventures of Robin Hood (which I loved) and the Blu-ray release includes six short films, all of which I also watched. That gave me seven movies on one disc! I'm at 49 movies so far, and 1000 seems all but impossible right now.

I'm still at it. I'm currently at 95, still ahead of my 365 in 365 pace. I've been watching The Sopranos pretty much exclusively for the past couple of weeks, so my numbers aren't picking up much.

Wow, now that would be hard, it took me seven years to watch 1,400.
