The Motorcycle Diaries?

Likely confirmation of the New Hollywood/Bert Schneider-Bob Rafelson set with Easy Rider (the motorcycle), Head (the four monkeys or rather Monkees), Five Easy Pieces, The Last Picture Show, The King of Marvin Gardens, A Safe Place and Drive, He Said.

Yes, as a box set. It was initially going to be put out by Sony, but they apparently licensed it to Criterion. The plus side is that supposedly, now we'll get a Blu-Ray release of the box set.

I've only seen Easy Rider. This could be interesting.

Didn't Easy Rider just get a pretty nice Blu Ray release? I don't understand why they are only releasing these in a box set... Are they going to be all decked out with extras and everything? This just seems kind of stupid. I've only heard of two of these movies (I am interested in them, though).

Easy Rider was actually one of the titles Sony put out in a Blu-Ray digibook. I was surprised when I initially read about it that it would be included, but I can't really complain.

I just saw Easy Rider for the first time last night. I'm sorry I put it off for so many years. What an amazing flick. That, along with Five Easy Pieces would make this set a must buy for me.

Do you happen to know if they'll be sold individually? Does Criterion do that for their sets? I gotta say, I was never big on Easy Rider. The only one I think I'd be interested in is Head. (Hopefully on Blu-ray!)

At this time it's unlikely.

if Five Easy Pieces and Last Picture Show get a blu release as part of a set, I dont care what the other films are like, I'm buying.

You mean that's not "Jumanji"??

;)

Why do i have a feeling this refers to the movie "Head." I see the Monkees on the bike and the movie was produced, written and starred Jack Nicholson. Maybe i am way off.

This.

IMO Five Easy Pieces is the definitive 'New Hollywood' film.

Though it's not a BBS production, I'd love to see Criterion put out The Last Detail as well.

because that's what people in this thread and elsewhere have all deduced as well - and posted long before you.

This set could be something pretty amazing. I just hope they don't price it at $30 a title - $10 or so like they usually do...if it has 7 films I hope it's as close to $100 list as they can get it. Given how they've been able to have things like Zissou available at lower prices, i'm hopeful. But I suspect it'll probably be more like $150 list...which would suck. If they aren't going to make any of them available individually, that's going to be a hard box to move many units of given that the most well known title is already widely available in a great release. Last Picture Show is probably the best film in the set, but not nearly as well known, and black & white, which far too many people have an aversion to that might otherwise be interested in the other films. This is all uncharted territory though, so we'll see I guess...

Yeah, if they price it low it means we are probably going to get little to no special features a-la Eclipse.
