Harry Potter Ultimate 3 & 4 - No Extended Editions

From The Digital Bits:

Well, I would say the big release news today, is that Warner Home Video has just announced the next pair of Harry Potter Ultimate Edition box sets. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will both street on DVD and Blu-ray on 10/19 (SRP $39.92 for DVD and $49.99 for Blu-ray). All of the previous DVD and Blu-ray special features will be included, along with the new Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 3: Creatures documentary (on Azkaban) and Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 4: Sound & Music (on Goblet of Fire). Each will also include a bonus Digital Copy. Azkaban will also include a 48-Page Creatures photo book, 2 collectible Character Cards (Hermione Granger and Sirius Black) and a Year 3 Lenticular Card, while Goblet of Fire will include a 44-Page Sound & Music photo book, 2 more collectible Character Cards (Ronald Weasley and Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody) and a Year 4 Lenticular Card. [Editor's Note: We have confirmed with WHV that - unlike the first two Potter UEs - there will be no extended versions of the films on these sets.]

I picked up the previous two Ultimate Editions on Blu-ray during release week (even though I already own all the movies on DVD plus the latest one on Blu). But due to the lack of Extended Editions on these new sets, I'm now reconsidering getting these...

I am holding out on any HP BR until like 18 months after Deathly Hallows comes out on BR so they can release the Ultimate Collecter's Set of all the films in a Nice Box Set then I will buy it

Wow, disappointing. There's got to be some footage they can shovel in there to pad the running time. At least pretend to give us something worth buying.

Agreed, and I'm glad I held out in buying the first two they recently released, as I wanted to see if they would get it right on the other films. I'll just wait...

Admittedly, it's disappointing that there isn't any extended cuts (granted, these films may not NEED one, but it's still cool to see a different version of the same film), but I still plan on getting these...

There definitely is more footage, to my knowledge, EVERY HP film thus far has been shown on TV with more footage.

And with a substantial amount of extra footage that actually adds to the story. I'm not buying these, that was the main reason I bought the other two sets and didn't wait for an ultimate box set. Those first 2 had everything I could want.

^ but there was also a rumour (which some hint is true) that commentary tracks have and will be released at some point for all the films. I agree with you Peeps I'm leaning to not buying these editions.

I'll get by with my dvd special editions that I have been able to get for ~$5 each until they release the ultimate set.

Like many titles, there will never be a true "Ultimate" edition. They will re-release this series until the format dies.

Re: Harry Potter Ultimate 3 & 4 - No Extended Editions

Bill Hunt posted this update today:

Also today, we've got a follow up for you on those two new Harry Potter Ultimate Edition box sets - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will both street on DVD and Blu-ray on 10/19. As you know, we've confirmed that there will be no extended cut of these films on the discs, unlike the first two Potter UEs, and a lot of you wanted to know why. We asked Warner Home Video for a little more information, and what they essentially said was that they would do an extended version if there was significant or important scenes left out by the filmmakers - scenes that would add more than just length to the film if they were restored. So Warner gave the filmmakers the option to create extended cuts, but in the case of both Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire, the directors felt that the best material was already in the film, so there was really no need. Anyway, I just thought some of you would like to know.

Let me guess, he's also a socialist, Kenyan, Manchurian candidate?

That sounds like a studio comment, and I'm sure there's a deeper layer to that. I'll hold out for the super duper "oh wait, I really did want those extra scenes in there" editions down the road.

Re: Harry Potter Ultimate 3 & 4 - No Extended Editions

Yeah, I felt those movies could've had a ton more scenes inserted. I don't believe Warner knows what they are really saying. This is going to cause a lot of hard feelings for many years with the fans. Another problem with the Ultimates was the bigass boxes. Like JJE-187 and AlwaysOAR, I'm waiting for a nicely packaged set of all 8 movies before I get them on Blu.

For next year, when Order of the Phoenix comes out, hopefully they do have alot of unused footage. It's the biggest book of the series, but it's the shortest movie.

Alfonso Cuarón has been quoted regarding the lack of "deleted scenes" for Azkaban many times. He basically knew exactly what he wanted to film and put it in the movie.

Re: Harry Potter Ultimate 3 & 4 - No Extended Editions

^ thankfully though there's a smidgen of deleted scenes for Azkaban in the supplement section, and the TV cut reinstates those scenes into the movie's storyline.
