Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Movies count as 1 entry each.

TV shows count according to length as they are aired on TV(including commercials):

• 30 minute shows count as 1/4 an entry
• 1 hour shows count as 1/2 an entry
• 2 hour shows count as 1 entry

So you need 4, 30 minute shows for 1 entry or 2 60 minute shows or any combination that gets you to 1 entry. While X-Files has a runtime of around 43 minutes, on-air it's an hour show.

If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show. This is based on the theory that the run time for a 30 minute show is between 22-24 minutes.

For mini series, do count each "day" that it aired (assuming that each day was a 2 hour block). For example, Dune: The Mini Series, would it be:

When listing TV shows, keep them together for one entry.
Example: How do I list TV shows and other short stuff if I don't have enough for an entry?

At the bottom of your post/list, keep a Temp TV section. Add stuff there until you get enough for an entry.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

July 1st:

1. Ultraviolet (2006): I've always enjoyed this film. Goofy, but fun and stylish. Does loads better when it isn't dipping into melodramatics. Earns more points for having Vietnamese Vampire Clans.

2. Event Horizon (1997): Hellraiser in Space. Definitely follows the "Haunted House" formula of some Horror Films, but atmosphere, dread and selective gore make this film a ridiculous treat. Wish Paul W.S. Anderson continued to make films like this.

3. Cube (1997): Simple but menacing premise. Film would go on to influence many others that followed it and spawn some pretty awful sequels. Would probably be better off shorter than 90 minutes. Acting all around is solid minus the hilarity that was Maurice Dean Wint.

July 2nd:

4. Jason X (2001): Friday The 13th Series gets sprinkled with a little Sci-Fi Love. D-Grade fun, filled with robot nipples, cross dressing scientists, a David Cronenberg cameo and Jason Voorhees as Lord Zedd. More good times than you can shake a stick at!

5. The Running Man (1987): It's hard not to love the concept of this film or getting to see Classic Arnie. Pretty fun film. Though to be honest, I tried not to laugh at any of the Stalkers and failed. From Opera singing Dynamo, to the completely random Jim Brown appearance. The one-liners are complete gold.

July 3rd:

6. Total Recall (1990): I've never seen this film uncut, so this viewing being the first time, made it all that more interesting. Complete off-the-wall fun for it's (almost) 2 hour run time. FX work is solid. How creepy is Johnny Cab? Also who would I be if I didn't mention the mutant with 3 boobs?

July 5th

7. Contamination (1980): Snoring Alien Eggs and Gory Chest Explosions can't save this flick. Everything interesting pretty much happens in the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the film. Makes the rest of it extremely tedious to sit though. Apparently everyone looks like they are on Maternity Leave before exploding.

Thursday, July 1st 1 - Gojira (1954) - The original Japanese film is so different from the typical Godzilla monster movies we're used to; not a monster-on-the-loose film but more an anti-war/nuclear testing allegory. I wouldn't have appreciated it much as a kid, just the very few big guy action scenes, but love it now. 2 - Again with film historian commentary.

Friday, July 2nd 3 - Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956) - The American bastardization is still a fun film, the one I fell in love with as a kid, but I now view it as the much weaker of the two versions. The insertion of the Steve Martin scenes, while interesting to hear/think about technically, makes for a pretty silly experience overall. They deleted way too many good scenes as well, including most of the references to the atomic bombings of Japan. 4 - Again with film historian commentary.

Saturday, July 3rd 5 - Gojira no gyakushû (1955) - First time viewing of the original Japanese version of the Gojira follow-up. I enjoyed it, but wasn't it convenient that Godzilla liked to just stand around in that box canyon? 6 - Gigantis the Fire Monster (1959) - US version adds a ton of narration, cuts a lot of the human elements, and loses a decent score for a bland non-fitting one; but adds dubbing by George Takei! Crap, now I want to watch all the Star Trek series. 7 - Again with film historian commentary. 8 - Kingu Kongu tai Gojira (1962) - Just as I was about to pop in my King Kong vs. Godzilla DVD, I had a horrible thought, which became a horrible realization after some googling. I only had the US version of the film. My goal is to watch the original versions, so I had to find it quickly. Discovered that there is no region 1 release, and possibly no legitimate release at all, so I resorted to means I usually don't delve into to get it.

Sunday, July 4th 9 - Legion (2010) - Brought the amazing film Moon over to a friend's to watch via my brand new laptop with HDMI-out. Find that the crappy software won't allow me to view BDs via HDMI, crap! So she rents Legion over FIOS-on-demand. Pretty crappy, but at least I steered her away from Avatar. 10 - King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) - Loved this as a kid, until the ending. No way King Kong comes even close to beating Godzilla. Seeing it now, the ending seems quite ambiguous to me, but wtf with King Kong's electricity absorbing powers? 10.5 - Supernatural, S1E1, Pilot (2005) - Weird, just noticed that the lead actress of Legion, Adrianne Palicki, was the girlfriend in this episode. 11 - Supernatural, S1E2, Wendigo (2005) - Some of my first strong television memories are of Kolchak, the Night Stalker. Love that show, hey wait, why aren't I watching it? Oh well, maybe next year. But Supernatural is starting off as a worthy successor. 11.5 - Supernatural, S1E3, Dead in the Water (2005) - Creepy kid in the water. I think I'm in love with Amy Acker. 12 - Supernatural, S1E4, Phantom Traveler (2005) - Saw most or all of this first season before, and remember really loving this show back when I first discovered it. Surprised I put off watching the rest of the series this long. Really looking forward to the rest of it, own seasons 1-4, looks like I need 5. 13 - Independence Day (1996) - Bit the bullet and decided to watch this because of the date. Not a particular favorite, many parts of it I downright hate, but I do enjoy it for the most part. Decided to make it as "new-to-me" as possible by opening up my $5 blu-ray of it, and watching it with a commentary and the technical trivia track. Too long to finish in one sitting, finished most of it on Monday.

Monday, July 5th 14 - Mosura tai Gojira (1964) - First time seeing this original Japanese version. Sort of upset with myself finding that I apparently don't own the original Mothra. Wanted to watch it as it takes place before this film obviously. I could have sworn I owned it, but can't find that three film Toho pack anywhere. I'll likely order it and watch it later in the month. 14.5 - Supernatural, S1E5, Bloody Mary (2005) - I hate to admit this, but I am often still a little kid when it comes to fear. After watching this episode, a take on the don't-say-bloody-mary-three-times legend, I couldn't look into the mirror when I brushed my teeth that night.

Tuesday, July 6th 15 - Supernatural, S1E6, Skin (2005) - Love the music in this show, lots of 70s - 90s rock, and very happy that they have apparently retained all the rights for the DVD releases. This will hopefully be my slowest day of the Challenge. While I'm not aiming for 100, my listed goals will put me at close to 90, and I'm way behind schedule already.

Wednesday, July 7th 16 - Godzilla vs. the Thing (1964) - The US version this time. Interesting that the US distributer decided to be secretive about it and market it without the Mothra name. Only a few small changes between versions this time, unlike the first three films with fairly major differences. 17 - Godzilla vs. the Thing (1964) - Again with film historian commentary. While I know appreciate this film as perhaps the best of the series in overall filmmaking, I hate the fact that a frigging moth and caterpillars are shown as being able to beat Godzilla. They should have been lizard food in mere seconds. 17.5 - Supernatural, S1E7, Hook Man (2005) - Nothing too original in this one, but still a fun watch. 18 - Supernatural, S1E8, Bugs (2008) - Some weak CGI, but a decent enough episode otherwise. Very weak CGI though.

Thursday, July 8th 18.5 - Supernatural, S1E9, Home (2005) - Love the pop culture references throughout the series. Dean had a great line in this one, something like: "We're all good, (episode's female psychic) got her Zelda Rubinstein on." 19 - Supernatural, S1E10, Asylum (2005) - Another solid episode. Yes, for the entire series the acting is slightly bland, and the writing a bit deriative, but this show really clicks with me. 19.5 - Supernatural, S1E11, Scarecrow (2006) - Creepy monster. Nice Jeepers Creepers feel. 20 - Supernatural, S1E12, Faith (2006) - Wasn't there an X-Files episode just like this? Either way, great episode, loved the Reaper.

Friday, July 9th 20.5 - Supernatural, S1E13, Route 666 (2006) - About time Dean got some of the loving. 21 - Supernatural, S1E14, Nightmare (2006) - Not sure how much I like them giving Sam powers like that. Seems like it will turn into an easy out for the writers. Hopefully they won't abuse it. 21.5 - Supernatural, S1E15, The Benders (2005) - The first non-monster episode. Well, they were monsters, so, the first all-human episode. Ok, maybe you could call them less than human..... 22.5 - Planet of the Dinosaurs (1978) - Wow, this film was definitely right for the Rifftrax treatment. Looking forward to viewing that, and regretting that I watched it "naked" first.

Saturday, July 10th 23 - Supernatural, S1E16, Shadow (2006) - I thought I watched the entire first season years ago, but these last couple episodes aren't looking familiar. 23.5 - Supernatural, S1E17, Hell House (2006) - Nice premise and homages, but a bit weak overall. 24.5 - Planet of the Dinosaurs (1978) - Again with Rifftrax. I still need to listen to a few more before I make up my mind, but I'm not enjoying the rifftax (es?) as much as the original MST3Ks. I think I just miss the robots.

Sunday, July 11th 25.5 - Cinematic Titanic: The Oozing Skull (2007) - Nice riff on the 1972 travesty, Brain of Blood. 26.5 - Mystery Science Theater 3000, Night of the Blood Beast (1996) - 1958 film - This was very cool of Shout! They offer the show two ways, as presented on Thanksgiving 1995, with the live crew segements, and the regular version. guess I'll have to watch it both ways.

Monday, July 12th 27.5 - Mystery Science Theater 3000 - The Corpse Vanishes (1989) - The 1942 film is a guilty pleasure for me, enjoy all aspects of it actually. Cheesy fun, an interesting plot even if poorly executed, and Bela. 28.5 - Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Warrior of the Lost World (1993) - This 1983 film reeks badly.

Tuesday, July 13th 29.5 - Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Santa Claus (1993) - I'm a Christmas junkie, but don't think I'll ever want to watch this 1959 film again without the MST3K enhancement. 30.5 - Naked Lunch (1991) - Not sure what I just watched, but I had fun doing it.

Wednesday, July 14th 31.5 - Sora no daikaijû Radon (1956) - Known primarily as Rodan, this was my first viewing of the original Japanese version. Love the tension and uncertainty building up to the reveals. 32.5 - Rodan! The Flying Monster (1957) - Not a huge fan of Rodan as a monster, but I like the film. The "human parts" are well done for a kaiju film. 33 - Supernatural, S1E18, Something Wicked (2006) - I guess this is normal for all television series, but I like how they are slowly filling in some of the backstory on the characters. 33.5 - Supernatural, S1E19, Provence (2006) - Ok, this makes like five episodes in a row that seem brand new to me, so I guess I never finished season one back when it was being aired. Red numbering it is. 34 - Supernatural, S1E20, Dead Man's Blood (2006) - Vampires! Finally! Never heard that trick about dead man's blood. Now I'm thinking of Boston Brand.... 34.5 - Supernatural, S1E21, Salvation (2006) - The Winchester family is going to run out of friends.

Thursday, July 15th 35 - Supernatural, S1E22, Devil's Trap (2006) - Another cliffhanger, but I guess one season is a bit too short to conclude the major storyline. Wonder if they planned it out that close to a full conclusion when they were unsure of a season 2, making it easy to finish things up if it had been cancelled? 36 - Missle to the Moon (1958) - Wow, a plot that could have been decent, but pretty poor execution. I know they weren't working with much of a budget, but those "rock creatures" are ridiculously bad. 37 - Missle to the Moon (1958) - Again with rifftrax. Not quite sure which version was funnier.

Friday, July 16th 38 - Mothra (1961) - First time viewing of the original Japanese version. Can't find my DVD, but more and more sure that I own it, so I found it online. Does that make me a bad person? Wasn't a Mothra fan at all as a kid, but viewing her films now I see them as quite well-made.

Saturday, July 17th 39 - San daikaijû: Chikyû saidai no kessen (1964) - First time viewing the original Japanese version of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. As always, a very nice DVD release by Classic Media. I wish they were able to produce versions of all the films, that would make my year if I ever heard that news.

Sunday, July 18th 40 - Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1965) - Now the US version. This is one of my favorite Godzilla films, definitely was when I was a kid, and likely was one of the ones I saw most often as a kid. When I remember my childhood viewings of Godzilla films, I remember these "lots of monsters" films more than the ones with only one or two monsters. Great combination of suit acting and wire work on Ghidorah. 41 - Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster (1965) - Again with film historian commentary.

Monday, July 19th 42 - Kaijû daisenso (1965) - Original Japanese version. Enjoy this film very much, nice combination of multi-monster action and decent human storylines. 43 - Monster Zero (1970) - I wonder why the US release was delayed almost 5 years. After viewing research of the film led me to sad story of the life of Nick Adams. 44 - Invasion of Astro-Monster (1970) - This title has apparently become the most popular one. This viewing was my favorite, as it was with commentary by DVDTalk's very own Stuart Galbraith IV! Great commentary, as are his reviews here.

Tuesday, July 20th 45 - Godzilla Versus the Sea Monster (1966) - Way too much human stuff and not nearly enough monster action in this one. Not even sure if I ever saw this one before, but I probably did as a kid. 46 - Son of Godzilla (1967) - Fairly decent story and execution, but I was never a big fan of Minilla.

Wednesday, July 21st 47 - Destroy All Monsters (1968) - This was my favorite as a kid, and may still be. Would love to see a better DVD release of this one. 48 - Inception (2010) - Best film of the year so far. This is right in my breadbox, a sci-fi thriller that makes you think. 48 - Gojira-Minira-Gabara: Oru kaijû daishingeki (1969) - Japanese version isn't too different from the US. Two big negatives are that it was completely aimed at a children's audience for the first time, and it also used lots of stock footage from the earlier films. Despite these flaws, I enjoy it, perhaps because I still have the mind of a child. 49 - Godzilla's Revenge (1971) - US title doesn't make much sense, I don't see much revenge going on here. 50 - All Monsters Attack (1971) - Again with film historian commentary. Weird how all these films seem to have so many darn titles. Yet another fantastic DVD release from Classic Media. 50.25 - Æon Flux pilot (1991) - Bought this set years ago, for an exclusive at Circuit City iirc, and am finally going to watch it all. Watched this first episode twice, once with creator commentary. Cool that the main character besides Æon is named Trevor. 50.50 - Æon Flux season 2 (1992) - Five shorts comprise the so-called second season of Æon Flux, the pilot being all of season one. Love these things! So bizarre, and awesome endings! 50.75 - Æon Flux season 2 (1992) - Again with creator commentary. 51 - Æon Flux, S3E1, Utopia or Deuteranopia? (1995) - First full length episode.

Thursday, July 22nd 52 - Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (1971) - Trippy. It's like they gave the reigns of the franchise to a bunch of coked-up hippies. It's fun I guess, and enjoyed by me for being one of my only drive-in theater memories. 53 - The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) - Oh.my.God. 54 - The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) - Again with Rifftrax. Nice double feature here I guess. Take two franchises, and totally F with them. 55/56 - Neverwhere (1996) - Really enjoyed this one, but surprised that the production values seemed so low. Like all of Gaiman's works that I have tried, film and comic books, but must shamefully admit that his novels have been gathering dust in my to-read pile for up to 20 years now. I apparently gave up reading when DVDs were invented. Sadly, that is close to true. 57 - Event Horizon (1997) - Love this film. Great blend of sci-fi and horror, fantastic performances especially by Sam Neil, nice ending.

Friday, July 23rd 58 - The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) - Trying to open up a few of my blu-rays for these Challenges, as for some reason they tend to stay in my unwatched piles. Started this early this morning, more later when I finish, but it looks very promising so far.

Saturday, July 24th 59 - Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) - The inclusion of a manga artist as a lead character made me think of Chasing Amy, one of my favorite films. Surprised at how bloody these Japanese versions are compared to the edited US versions I'm used to.

Sunday, July 25th 60 - Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) - This is sort of my favorite film of the series, but mainly for nostalgic reasons. This is perhaps the only Godzilla film that I have a full memory of seeing in the theater. My family was on vacation in Akron Ohio, and my cousins, sister, and I convinced our parents to take us to the theater to see it. About halfway through, a projector or power failure messed things up, and they ended up restarting the film. At the end, as everyone was about to file out of the theater, an employee told us that they had messed up again, and didn't play a part of the film. They let us all stay for yet another viewing, so we basically saw the film two and a half times back to back to back. I'm sure our parents were pissed, but we kids loved it, and Jet Jaguar and Megalon have always been favorites and what I picture when someone mentions Godzilla. I was a huge Ultraman fan before this happened, so that may also explain my love for this film. 61 - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) - Nice variety of monsters here. We have good old Godzilla of course, bad guy Godzilla who turns out to be Mechagodzilla, trusty old sidekick Anguirus, and cool new King Caesar.

Monday, July 26th 62 - Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - My first time seeing the original Japanese version. Once again, I'm surprised by all the blood edited out for the US version, and impressed by the Classic Media DVD release. 63 - Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - The US version of the film. Plot here was way too similar to others in the series. Aliens capturing our human heroes, who manage to escape their ropes and save the day. 64 - Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - Again with expert commentary.

Tuesday, July 27th 65 - Mystery Science Theater 3000, Godzilla vs. Megalon (1991) - My favorite television series combined with my favorite film of my favorite franchise. If my house was burning down and I could only grab one DVD, it might be this set. 66 - Godzilla 1985: The Legend Is Reborn (1984) - How in the world is there no region 1 DVD release of this? I searched online and ending up with a probable boot, but will buy a legitimate region 1 release if it ever gets done. Very interesting how they once again made significant changes for the US version, again with Raymond Burr as sort of a narrator and reporter Steve Martin. He was never referred to as Steve in the film, reportedly so as to avoid confusion with the comedian.

Wednesday, July 28th 67 - Gojira vs Biorante (1989) - I think they were eating shrooms before they wrote this script, but it is quite interesting, with some new concepts brought to the table. And again, released in 8 different countries, but not the US.

Thursday, July 29th n/a - La lune à un mètre (1898) - I only watched this for checklist purposes, but wow, Georges Méliès was a genius. I keep putting off buying a boxset of his films, I need to get on that. n/a - Le voyage dans la lune (1902) - Ibid. n/a - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1912) - More checklist fodder. I'm thinking of collecting all of the various film versions of the Jekyll and Hyde story. I think there are at least 50 so far. Watched these three online at work, just to fill in a few more things on the checklist. But looking at the number of holes I have in it, finishing it will be impossible.

Friday, July 30th 68 - Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) - Nearly had to abort my Challenge/Godzilla goal today. I ordered this DVD over a week ago, but it still hasn't arrived. This film wasn't available on Netflix streaming, and I couldn't find any working torrents. Luckily, I found it being hosted at crackle.com, some ad supported video streaming site that looks legit, but at this point I don't really care. Interesting, didn't realize we had a time travel Godzilla film. Time travel stuff is one of my guilty pleasures, so I was destined to love this one. 69 - Gojira vs. Mosura (1992) - Really enjoyed this one. Mainly old ideas, but a few new twists, and Battra was a cool monster. 70 - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993) - Lots of big monster variety and fights. But seriously, second brains? And how often are we going to see one monster sacrificing itself for the greater good? It's getting old, and I know there is more of it in the later films. 71 - Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla (1994) - 72 - Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) - 73 - The Terminator (1984) - Ugh, maybe I'll go for the checklist after all. I'm off work for a few days, and can probably stay awake most of the next 48 hours and finish it off. One of my favorite films, love Linda Hamilton in this. 74 - Parasite (1982) - Checklist fodder, but I actually sort of like this. Demi Moore's first starring role btw. n/a - At 3:25 (1925) - For the decade checklist only, but very nice little French film. 75 - Aerograd (1935) - Not very sci-fi-ish, but they list it that way for some reason. Mainly a Russian propaganda film. 76 - Beetlejuice (1988) - Almost chose a different Tim Burton film, but I've been meaning to re-watch this one anyway.
