1. Ugetsu (1953) 96 min. Two peasants in 16th century Japan try to take advantage of the war threatening their village. One achieves success in business, the other becomes a false samurai hero by being at the right place at the right time, but both find the costs of their success far greater than they expected. One of the greatest films of all time.
2. Sansho the Bailiff (1954) 124 min. The wife and children of a provincial governor are sold into slavery after he is demoted and exiled for trying to soften the exploitation of the poor in his province. They face a struggle between retaining their humanity by following his teachings of justice and compassion, or slowly climbing back up in the brutal world they live in by assisting in exploiting and crushing their fellow slaves. A harrowing depiction of life in feudal Japan, its Jeffersonian ideals seem somewhat anachronistic, but director Kenji Mizoguchi makes a convincing argument that these are universal values, as at home in Buddhist Japan as in the West in the Age of Enlightenment.
3. Hell's Angels (1930) * 132 min. British pilots fight in France in World War I. The melodrama of the romance between honorable pilot James Hall and slutty aristocrat Jean Harlow, and Hall's efforts to make sure that his cowardly brother (Ben Lyon) does the right thing, are forgettable. The flight scenes are spectacular and the theme of self-sacrifice for the cause carries through to the surprisingly moving conclusion.
4. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) 133 min. Classic anti-war film still hits hard. The battle scenes capture the horror of the never-ending slaughter, but the absurdity of Paul's father and his friends explaining to Paul their plans for victory (based on their reading of newspaper accounts of battle) if the troops just push harder, and the obscenity of Paul's former teacher, no longer pretending to teach anything but patriotism and conformity, trying to use Paul to indoctrinate his next, younger class to die for the fatherland, are equally devastating.
5. Wooden Crosses (1932) * 113 min. Covers similar ground to All Quiet on the Western Front, and is an equally great movie, but seems on the whole less sentimental. Does a good job of capturing the monotony between the battle, and the ending perfectly conveys the film's message.
6. No Regrets For Our Youth (1946) * 110 min. College professor is ousted because of his opposition to the policies of the Japanese government after its occupation of Manchuria, and his daughter has to choose between two of his students, a radical who believes that her father hasn't gone far enough, and a conformist who is afraid to challenge the system and gets ahead by betraying his principles and friends. Somewhat weakened by its vagueness about the principles of the professor and the activities of the opposition group, and its rather mystical emphasis on redemption through agricultural labor seems a bit odd, but the performance of Setsuko Hara as the professor's daughter is outstanding.
7. Captain John Smith and Pocahontas (1953) * 76 min. A movie that doesn't let historical accuracy get in the way of its story, it's a typical 1950s western that happens to be set in 17th century Virginia and uses a few famous names and a famous legend of the period.
8. Glory (1989) * 122 min. The story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, one of the first black units in the US Army, from its formation through its most famous battle at Fort Wagner, near Charleston, SC. The movie unflinchingly depicts the horror of war, while recognizing that the white officers and non-coms and black non-coms and enlisted men were fighting for principles that they were certain were worth their lives.
9. Waterloo Bridge (1931) * 81 min. A prostitute falls in love with a soldier on leave in London during World War I. A well made film with strong performances, especially Mae Clarke in the lead role, although the ending seems a bit of a letdown.
10. Rashomon (1950) 88 min. In 11th century Kyoto, the capital of Japan in the Heian period, a woodcutter recounts four versions of a crime, involving a samurai, his wife and a thief, to his two companions at the Rashomon gate. Whose version is the truth, if any? There are strong performances by the entire cast and innovative cinematography in the first film to produce widespread international acclaim for director Akira Kurosawa.
11. Wild and Wooly (1917) * 72 min. Wild West enthusiast son of a railroad president is sent to scout Arizona town for a possible new spur. The townspeople create an adventure for him, hoping that he will send back a favorable report. Excellent showcase for Douglas Fairbanks' charm and athleticism.
12. Bucking Broadway (1917) * 54 min. Cowboy travels to New York to save fickle fiancee from sinister horse buyer. Early pairing of director John Ford and star Harry Carey.
13. The Last of the Mohicans (1992) * 117 min. Director Michael Mann skillfully adapts James Fenimore Cooper's romance, stripping it down to its essential elements to create a rousing adventure.
14. 1776 (1972) 165 min. The songs are often rather silly, but the story is compelling. The delegates to the Continental Congress wrestle with the conflict between their common interest in opposing British oppression and their individual loyalties to class and state. The ending creates an iconic image of great men, but on the way to July 4th we are shown that they could be petty and parochial, but also visionary and heroic.
15. Elgar (1962) * 55 min. Ken Russell's BBC documentary about one of the premier English composers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The text reveals him as an outsider: a shopkeeper's son who married a general's daughter (her family disinherited her), provincial, Roman Catholic, patriotic but ultimately disillusioned with his society. The combination of music and images reveal his inspirations: the natural beauty of his native Worcestershire, Catholic mysticism, and his passionate love for his wife.
16. Factory Girl (2006) * 99 min. Biography of Edie Sedgwick, poor little rich girl who rebelled against her abusive family by becoming notorious as one of Warhol's superstars. Guy Pearce as Warhol and Sienna Miller as Sedgwick are excellent, but story fails to convince that Edie was a bright light who was under-appreciated before her death, does convince that Andy's true genius was for manipulating his followers rather than for producing art.
17. Fistful of Dollars (1964) 100 min. Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood made a classic western.
18. For a Few Dollars More (1965) 131 min. Classic Sergio Leone western pairs rival bounty hunters Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef in hunt for psychopathic bank robber Gian Maria Volonte and his gang.
19. Back Door To Hell (1964) * 69 min. Three American soldiers join Filipino guerrillas to scout Japanese defenses in preparation for landing on Luzon. Movie focuses on character and motivation as much as on action.
20. Ride In The Whirlwind (1965) * 82 min. Three cowboys cross paths with outlaws with tragic results. Director Monte Hellman's western feels real, and deserves to be much more widely known.
21. The Shooting (1965) * 81 min. Existential western. Woman wants to hire former bounty killer turned miner to guide her to a town. He does it even though he knows something else is going to happen.
22. Just Pals (1920) * 50 min. Town bum takes charge of hobo boy. Amiable comic/melodramatic western takes a jaded view of the "respectable" people of the town. Very good performances by Buck Jones as Bim and George Stone as the boy.
23. Battleship Potemkin (1925) * 71 min. A masterpiece of propaganda (in a good way).
24. A Modern Musketeer (1917) * 69 min. Douglas Fairbanks plays a young man who dreams of becoming D'Artagnan and leaves Kansas to find adventure. He meets a young woman on the way to the Grand Canyon, and must rescue her from the ruthless Hopi leader of a band of outlaws and from the rich bigamist that her mother wants her to marry.
25. The Hellfire Club (1961) * 93 min. Young son of an aristocrat in mid-18th century England flees his evil father, returns as an adult to try to displace his cousin who has assumed the title. Good performances by Keith Michell as the good son and Peter Arne as his bad cousin, and a lot of sword fights.
26. Hell' s Hinges (1916) 64 min. Bad man William S. Hart is reformed by love.
27. His Bitter Pill (1916) * 20 min. Keystone western is a drama with a comic performance by Mack Swain as the sheriff. Mama's boy sheriff is in love with woman who is in love with a man who turns out to be an outlaw.
28. The Toll Gate (1920) 73 min. Outlaw leader William S. Hart is sold out by a traitor in his gang, and tries to go straight after he escapes. Great western.

3. Agora (2009)--A depiction of the murder of the Egyptian mathematician and astronomer Hypatia at the hands of a Christian mob in the waning days of the Western Roman Empire, this movie raises disturbing issues of the fragility of reason and logic in the face of hysterical religious zealotry. Watch the trailer.

4. The Devils (1971). Ken Russell's thoroughly wacked out adaptation of Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudoun, a nonfiction account of the trial and execution of a French Catholic priest for sorcery in 1634, which shows the uses of propaganda and fear in the furtherance of state control of the masses. Watch the trailer.

5. Lady Jane (1985) A fairly accurate retelling of the 9-day reign of Lady Jane Grey, played by a very young Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes as her husband who was also beheaded for treason in 1553.

6. The Longest Day (1962) In commemoration of the 66th anniversary of D-Day

7. The Ed Sullivan Show: February 9, 1964/The Ed Sullivan Show: February 16, 1964 Back in the long ago days when there were only 3 channels and American pop music was limited to Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon, The Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, an example of the long-extinct variety show, kicking off the British Invasion and Beatlemania. These 2 shows are a snapshot of the popular entertainment found on TV at the time: magicians, comedy teams, and Broadway performers.

8. Orlando (1992) A spectacularly surreal examination of the roles of men and women, of the dichotomy between art and reality, against a canvas of 450 years of British history.

9. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) One of the greatest, if not THE greatest, films ever made. This is the only film Maria Falconetti ever made, but what a performance! Dreyer used closeups almost exclusively, so that Joan's fear of death and her desire to serve God are etched on her face. This film is mandatory to own for any film fan.

10. Nova: The Riddle of the Sphinx/ Ancient Mysteries: Canals of Venice--Very basic TV documentaries.

11. Downfall (2004), a terrific film depicting Hitler's last days in his bunker beneath Berlin. I was confused however by the scene where Hitler complains about being kicked off X-Box Live, and bitches about Hillary Clinton not quitting the race, and losing his iPad.

12. 1776 (1972) It's a shame this film bombed so badly on its initial release, but the mood of the country in the throes of Watergate and the collapse of South Vietnam was not ready for a musical about the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. It's easily one of my favorite film musicals.

13. The Naked Civil Servant (1975). In honor of Pride month, the autobiography of Quentin Crisp, a gay writer and actor who came out as a flamboyantly gay peacock in the 20s when being gay was illegal in Britain, played marvelously by John Hurt.

14. Marat/Sade (1966)--A marvelously bizarre political tract/discourse on the nature of art that has enough songs in it to qualify as a musical, this film reminds me of Sweeney Todd in its examination of the cruelty of man towards men and the futility of of trying to improve one's conditions. The film is based on the original 1964 RSC production, which depicts mental patients in the asylum at Charenton, France acting out the murder of Jean-Paul Marat under the direction of the Marquis de Sade.

15. For Me And My Gal (1942). Spiffy Judy Garland and Gene Kelly musical set against WWI.

16. Richard III (1995). Ian McKellen and Richard Loncraine's masterful adaptation of the historical play featuring Shakespeare's most captivating villain.
17. Sebastiane (1973). Derek Jarman's directorial debut. (1) It is super gay (2) The dialogue is entirely in Latin.

18. La Reine Margot (1994). An adaptation of Dumas' Marguerite Du Valois, portraying the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572 after the wedding of Marguerite and Henri du Navarre who became Henri IV of France 17 years later.
19. The Young Victoria (2009). A fairly meh biopic of Victoria's first few years as queen and her marriage to Albert.

23. Dangerous Liaisons (1988). Of the three filmed versions of De Laclos's scandalous 1782 epistolary novel, this is the best. Glenn Close makes a wonderfully cynical Marquise de Mertueil, and even though I would have preferred Alan Rickman to reprise his RSC performance, John Malkovich is aptly reptilian as the sexual predator, the Viscomte de Valmont.

24. Battleship Potemkin (1925). Eisenstein's epic account of the abortive 1905 rebellion against Czarist corruption is still as powerful as ever.

25. Across The Pacific (1942). Extremely hokey anti-Japanese propaganda, but still immensely entertaining.
26. Casino (1995). Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Nicholas Pileggi's true crime story of Frank Rosenthal, a gambling analyst who ran the Mob-owned Stardust Hotel in Vegas during the 70s, and his involvement with the psychotic mobster Tony "The Ant" Spilotro.

27. Wilde (1997). Although this biopic of the tragic playwright and poet Oscar Wilde, sentenced to prison in 1896 for the crime of being gay, can drag at times, Stephen Fry as Wilde is brilliant.
28. The Harvey Girls (1946). This terrific Judy Garland musical tells the story of the real-life Harvey Girls, hired by Fred Harvey to staff his restaurants that served stops on the Santa Fe rail road.

29. 55 Days At Peking (1963). Yeah, it's racist in its depiction of Qing China, but it's still an entertaining, albeit long, movie, so it ought to see a DVD release someday. And you can't go wrong with Charlton Heston.

30. Land of the Pharaohs (1955) Terrific cheesy 50s camp, starring Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington's ancient Egyptian many-greats grandmother.
31. Men In War (1957). Interesting Anthony Mann film that kicks off the TCM Korean War marathon.

32. The Hindenburg (1975). An entertaining suspense thriller, positing that the destruction of the blimp in 1937 was the act of an anti-Nazi saboteur.
33. The Horse Soldiers (1959)-Late John Ford Western set during the Civil War.

June 26
34. Elizabeth (1998). Historically inaccurate, but still entertaining biopic of the Virgin Queen (or not so Virgin if Doctor Who is to believed)
35. Word Is Out (1977). Watching this documentary from 30 years ago seems like a snapshot from the stone age. The film consists of interviews with gay people about their lives and their struggle growing up gay in the 40s and 50s-being harassed by society at large, by the police, by the mental health industry. I and other gay folks are so lucky to be living in 2010 when gay marriage isn't just an idea but a real possibility and when homophobia is considered tacky by most people.
