Sept. 7th: TCM Greatest Classic Films: Hammer Horror

TCM Greatest Classic Films: Hammer Horror

http://www.amazon.com/Tcm-Greatest-C...4750765&sr=8-1

Horror of Dracula
Dracula Has Risen From the Grave
Curse of Frankenstein
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed

$19.99 (2 DVD)

So you get the first and fourth (if you count Brides) Dracula flicks and the first and fifth Frankensteins. Nice collection of Hammer Horror for people to start with, all good movies. Compares to the Warner Home Video "4 Film Favorites" which has two of the same titles unfortunately. Horror of Dracula, Dracula Has Risen From the Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, and Dracula A.D. 1972. $11.99.

Also saw a Gangsters one on the same page that has Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, White Heat, and High Sierra. Also Sept. 7th release, $19.99.

Re: Sept. 7th: TCM Greatest Classic Films: Hammer Horror

Anyone here get this and can let me/us know if the transfers of HORROR OF DRACULA and CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN are the same as the original individual dvds (aspect ratios, esp)?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure all the TCM releases have been the same content as the individual releases, including disc 1 bonus content

I think that Gangster's release was cancelled as the titles are now spread across two different 9/7/10 releases. Shame, because the one in the link was a good set.

More often than not this seems to be the case, but not always. For example, they put out a war set which includes The Green Berets. In all previous issues, Berets was a non-anamorphic flipper, meaning that you had to turn the disc over to finish the movie. On the 4 film version, they put the entire movie on one side and the transfer is anamorphic. A rather significant upgrade from the previous versions.

That is significant

Re: Sept. 7th: TCM Greatest Classic Films: Hammer Horror

It becomes relevant to the OPs question because word has it that the download version of Horror of Dracula has much better framing than the DVD. There is some hope that, in making this TCM set, they went with the newer transfer. Looks like none of us are willing to spend the 15 bucks to find out, though!

So anyway, according to DVD Drive In's review, the transfers are identical to the original releases. This is just a repackaging.

That's too bad, but hopefully there's a new release of the better HOD transfer coming down the road. Still, this is a good starter set.

Still kind of blows me a away that there will be some lesser Hammer blus (though I love all the movies synapse is doing!) before the core titles even get a new treatment. I know it all depends on who has rights and whatnot but still...seems wrong.

Two of these were in the "4 Film Classics: Dracula" set. Weird (and annoying) overlap.
