They cynical person? I would say the logical person, because what other reason would they have to do that?

I wasn't meaning substandard in relation to blu, but rather substandard in relation to just a basic transfer. A cynical person might suggest that they are purposely making the picture look like a pile of crap in order to make the blu look that much better.

This habit of Warners has been remarked on a number of times before.

My apologies... I misread your post to mean gimping it in terms of features. I hadn't realized that WB's transfers have gotten shoddy.

Just for the record, most of the reviewers are now stating that Warners has "fixed" whatever was wrong with their new title division poor MPEG-2 transfers. The last mucked-up DVD MPEG-2 encode was "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". It was so bad it was virtually unwatchable. Almost every new title DVD release since then has been up to normal DVD standards.

As for me, that last Harry Potter release was the last straw. I purchased a nice Blu-ray player from Wally World in late December along with the pristine BD of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and have been pretty happy with the results. And what everybody has been saying is true: The best DVD players on the market today are Blu-ray players.

Despite the growth of Bluray it's still a significantly smaller market than the installed DVD user base. I think it's an easy statement to say there will be some form of this megaset on DVD as well. I'm sure there will be some dropped features, and if you really want to get cynical one might guess that even Lucas were to include new transfers of the original theatrical versions in the Bluray set, they won't be in the DVD set in order to entice more people to go Blu.

Whatever happens, there'll be something on DVD. It'd be crazy for them to pass up the additional revenue.

Thats for sure. If the low sales numbers for the LOTR blue ray set are any indication, they will almost definitely release the set on dvd as well.

Again with LOTR, they are bare bones theatrical versions. Apples to oranges. Who wants those?

Who's to say you'll get much more from Lucas the first time around? Do you actually think he'll give you packed editions in hi-def and miss out on the eventual double-dip?

Actually the media representative said that they were working on a lot of extra features for the BD release. That's not to say that there won't be a double dip, but it's safe to say it won't be bare bones.

Re: "Star Wars"--Will There Be a Corresponding DVD Set With the Upcoming Blu Ray Rele

I've wished for years now that they had been releasing multiple sets for Star Wars on DVD. There's no way everything will ever fit in one set, there's always going to be that "one more thing..." that gets left off. If they had simply started in 97 with the SE's, just port over the laserdisc boxset extras, and done actual, meaningful updates over the years (and I still maintain that the 2004 silver box we got was pretty lightweight), there would have been cries of double dipping, but he did that anyways, and he didn't even provide real incentives to do it.

And the way Sansweet worded it, I'm definitely expecting multiple releases. I'm not entirely upset about it as I know there's tons of supplements that could be put on these sets, and as long as they cram each one full and don't repeat stuff (from set to set, I do want to see the older VHS and LD stuff archived on disc) I'm much more likely to keep double dipping.

Weren't we supposed to see something more official by now?

It's George Lucas! He'll milk a cow with tweezers if given the chance. So yes, there will be a corresponding dvd set.

I suspect it's just a clever play on words given the month and date.

Again with the same tired argument, sigh.

Doh...still it would have made a heck of a day for George Lucas and the folks at Skywalker Ranch to make an announcement.

Oh well "Am 4. Mai sind wir bei Ihnen."
