Trend towards 1.85:1 films?
Just wondering if there is a trend away from cinema scope 2.40:1 or 2.35:1 films. It seems the more and more films are framed in the 1.85 :1 or 1.78:1 lately. I am a little concerned as I have just ordered a new 2.35:1 screen for my theater.

There does seem to be a trend. I think you're still better off with the 2.35 anyway. There was a thread last month that talked about it:

Re: Trend towards 1.85:1 films?
I'm interested in how films are presented with the wider tv's. I know widescreen dvd's are anamorphic and HD media is 16x9. Both use letterboxing to present anything wider than 16x9. Do these wider tv's zoom into the image to fill the screen? If so, is there any loss of resolution? I'm sure there is some with dvd's, but does Blu Ray media still zoom into the picture or is that handled differently?

[QUOTE=Josh Z;10080860]There is no such trend. If you've been seeing a lot of 1.85:1 movies lately, that has more to do with the specific types of movies you watch.
You mean like most Disney animated titles, Up In the Air,Blind Side, Sherlock Holmes should I go on with no such trend?

Just because there are 1.85 movies released doesn't mean it's a trend. There have always been a mix of both aspect ratios and there will continue to be.

It is not "just the specific type of movies I watch" It seems to be the top releases each and every week that I am seeing which you don't see

You asked a question. Are you going to argue with anyone who doesn't answer the question the way you want them to?

So much for your trend.
There has been about a 50/50 split between the use of 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 for decades. I see no signs of that changing anytime soon. As they always have, filmmakers make their decisions regarding aspect ratio on a case-by-case basis for what they feel is appropriate for their movies.

Re: Trend towards 1.85:1 films?
I've never understood why some people have this need of having the image fill their entire screen, be it 4:3, 1.78, or now 2.35.
You could, of course, get 3 different TVs, one for each ratio.

Re: Trend towards 1.85:1 films?
My screen is 2.35:1 and I have never regretted it. Scope films look so great on it. I would say that it seems that for me, about 50% of the movies are scope and the others are 1.85:1. It appears that way at least because every time I put a movie in, I seem to have my projector set for the other setting. Murphy's Law I suppose.

Re: Trend towards 1.85:1 films?
I am not looking for films to fill the screen unless they are ment to be seen in that format. I watch all types of films, in fact I have hundreds of films in the 4:3 format that I watch in that format. I have no desire to change the format by stretching them and am trying to decide if I should go scope 2.35:1 or 1.85:1. It seems that everything I am preordering is either 1.78 or 1.85:1 lately thats all.
