Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
We've had worthwhile bonus features for more than a decade now, from commentary tracks to storyboard comparisons to documentaries about the filmmakers. The public at large tends to ignore this material, but I know this forum is full of bonus features junkies. There's a lot of fluff, to be sure, but we've all come across those gems that keep us interested.
For the sake of this thread, name one specific bonus feature that is your favorite. Maybe you think Paramount did a great job cobbling together features for the Centennial Collection release of The Odd Couple, but don't just say that. Name the specific feature that you hold in such high esteem, the one that you would suggest other bonus feature junkies check out for themselves, and that you wish would be the template for every release. |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
as simple as it sounds...a really well put-together
1. gag reel (40 Year-Old Virgin, Hot Fuzz) 2. really well made featurette/documentary on the making-of a movie with EVERYONE participating. (Iron Man, Platoon). |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Te recreation of the spider pit scene on original King Kong.
|
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Volume 2 of The Time Tunnel, which included the Made-for-TV Movie Time Travelers and the unaired Pilot for a Remake of this series.

Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Xmen 1.5 fly on the wall documentaries - I loved how we got to see what it was like when Bryan Singer went around the world and premiered his film
All of the bonus stuff on the Alien Quadrilogy, took me 2 months to get through it all! Ultimate James Bond - the documentaries on each film were top notch and well narrated. Blade 2 - loved the director's video diaries and deleted scenes! |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
I can't pick a specific offhand, but probably a commentary from an Evil Dead movie or a Kevin Smith movie.

Original Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots.

Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Well I am a special features junkie which is why I double and triple dip so much.
My current favorite is a Blu-Ray feature-In Movie Expierence/Maximum Movie Mode/PiP tracks. I loved the iCon PiP Mode on Gamer that I just watched for example,as well as IME on Terminator 3 and MMM on Terminator Salvation. I also love FUN commentaries. I don't need a very technical commentary, just a fun one like ones by Bruce Campbell,George A Romero,Tom Savini,Kevin Smith,Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg, and fun ones like the Night of Creeps commentaries and Resident Evil, and quite a few others. Lets just say that I have movies that I own JUST for the commentary Example:Thou Shalt Not Kill.....EXCEPT! because the movie is horrid but the commentary(that includes Bruce Campbell) is a absolute riot. I also love nice feature-length documentaries and some Gag Reels(some do suck however). |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
I like documentaries that deal with real crimes. Like the docs on Auto Focus and Wonderland. The doc on disc 2 of Wonderland is amazing. I watch it more than the movie

Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Specifically or just our favourite type of of extra ? Generally, commentaries and documentaries are great. Specifically, I just love the commentary on A Knight's Tale. That's my absolute favourite. My favourite documentaries are the stuff on the Star Wars trilogy set, just about all the stuff on the Doctor Who dvds, and, of course, bloopers of any kind.

Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Interviews with people you don't often hear from. E.g. SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1986) had informative interviews with three of the stars, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, and Cynthia Rothrock.

I liked that PLANET OF THE APES has a MEGO toy commercial from the 70's. I wish there were more features with pictures of toys or collectables from franchises. |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Yeah Disc 2 is WADD: The John C Holmes Story, I actually upgraded to the XXX version of the Doc just a few weeks ago
|
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
I miss Collectible Booklets and Full-Color Artwork on Disc now that they've taken those away from us. Cases without holes in them were nice too.

Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
The documentaries from the Alien Quadrilogy and Bladerunner. Fuck Laurent Bouzereau and his pathetic puff pieces, I want documentaries that are longer than the movies they're about, that delve into all the conflicts that took place during filming, sparing no ego.

Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
Any commentary by the following people:
- Martin Scorsese - Matt Stone & Trey Stone - David Kalat - Steven Soderberg - Kevin Smith - David Fincher - Tarantino - Wright & Pegg |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
The ten-minute 'Viva Don Vito' compilation on the Viva La Bam seasons 4 & 5 DVD. never laughed so hard at a DVD in my life.

Can't think of any specific examples, but those are my favorite too. Next would be audio commentaries from film historians. |
Re: Your Favorite Bonus Feature?
The commentary track by Steven Soderbergh and Tony Gilroy for The Third Man. I think it's the only commentary track I've listened to more than once.
