Re: What year did you start collecting?
My first VCR was in 1984. My first DVD was in 2002. My SERIOUS Collecting began in September of 2006, after seeing a Commercial for an "Adult Product" aired during A CHILDREN'S SHOW. I Cancelled my Cable TV Subscription and begin using the money that was formerly used to pay my Subscription Fee to purchase DVD Box Sets of any TV Show that interests me!

Re: What year did you start collecting?
It's pretty weird that I can trace it back to the exact day I got the collectors bug. For years my parents had been recording movies of pay-per-view and HBO, and I enjoyed their vast library but I've always been more a television freak. I remember the night that "Angel" premiered on the WB was the night that I got into the regular habit of recording my favorite TV shows onto VHS (it would usually take 3-4 VHS's per season to get all the episodes) - I stopped this practice about the time 'Angel' ended as well when "complete season" DVDs were almost guaranteed.
I bought my first DVD player the day "The Simpsons: The Complete First Season" came out - and then it was all over :P

Re: What year did you start collecting?
To be honest, I didn't begin collecting in earnest until about 2003. I was one of those whose VHS habit far more favored renting than buying. When I transitioned to DVD in 2000, I bought only a few favorites and became excited about Netflix making it possible for me to finally get to see The Sopranos without having to have HBO. My wife, though, had a big habit of buying movies that dated back to the VHS era; she'd gladly go to a rental store and buy those 3-for-$20 offers without knowing much about the titles as long as she recognized someone who was in them and the premise sounded remotely interesting to her.
Thankfully, I've managed to steer her into far less costly venues for acquiring media, but I have to say that without her influence, my library would still largely consist of just my favorites and a few franchises (Bond, Star Trek, etc.).

VHS, around 1984. I still remember my first VCR with the wired remote. My first rentals were Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone!
I purchased my first DVD player in the summer of 1999. I still have movies from the promo purchase that I haven't watched (Stargate, Stepmom, Lost in Space). I joined DVD Talk that October.

First DVD player in 1999, joined DVD talk, and still have those first 5 free DVDs. (Another one was SixDays, Seven Nights but I can't remember the 5th.)
VERY late to Blu Ray since AZ got hit hard by the recession and I have been out of work or under-employed for a while, but got the best job of my life and my first Blu Ray (UP!) late last year...so here I am back on DVDTalk!

Early 80's I started with Beta. Some prerecorded but mostly recording off HBO. Then by the late 80's or early 90's I was in to VHS. In 1998 I got my first DVD player and started DVD collecting. I quickly was spoiled with the quality but disappointed with the availability of titles. I picked up a used LD player and grabbed a bunch of LD's that were going to be slow to come to DVD; Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Disney were the major ones. I started with BD and HD in 07. I was working down on Long Island and the company paid to furnish my apartment so BD and HD are essential for anyplace.

VHS & DVD: 1999
I loved watching films before then, just never thought about collecting them. The moment I bought The Hills Have Eyes, Dawn Of The Dead and Zombi 2 on VHS, it all changed.

Around 1983, I think. My family got a Betamax and I started collecting. I think I've still got some Beta tapes floating around in my basement somewhere.

Re: What year did you start collecting?
I never collected VHS as I have DVD, although I did own a few tapes that I bought at cheap outlet shops. I bought my first VCR in 1984 and transitioned to DVD in 2000. I 'm a movie fan who likes to own films, but I'm not a collector, as in I don't care about slipcovers or inserts, and I don't feel the need to buy every movie in a series. However, with various sales that I've found through DVDTalk and by cycling CH memberships over the years, I've managed to amass around 1500 DVDs, which I guess one could call a "collection."
Last Christmas one of my presents was a Blu-Ray player, but I have promised myself to be a lot more circumspect about buying any BR titles.
So . .
VHS 1984. First owned: 200 Motels
DVD 2000 First owned: True Stories
Blu-Ray 2009 First owned: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Re: What year did you start collecting?
Got a dvd-rom for my computer in 1998 and a handful of dvds for my dorm.. First DVD was 'The Doors' but a few days later I think I got 2001, Dr. Strangelove (super weird looking cover), and Batman.
But the collection really took off when I went to Vietnam in 2001 and each title was $3. (of course those weren't the real deal and I don't consider those titles to be part of my collection now, but that really re-ignited the collector in me).

Re: What year did you start collecting?
The few VHS tapes I collected over the years might fill a standard size rubbermaid storage container. Don't remember the year, although I do recall getting my first VCR (LXI - 4 head w/ Titler!) from my parents in '91.
Never owned any laserdiscs.
The DVD obsession began in December of '98 with the silver case edition of Tomorrow Never Dies.
Joined the BD train in December 2007 with The Simpsons Movie.

Re: What year did you start collecting?
Good question. I got my first VHS tapes around 97 or 98, I think. As for my first DVD's, I think that collecting starting in 2001. My HD DVD collection began in 2008, at the beginning of the year, and my Blu-ray collection began around August of 2008.

Re: What year did you start collecting?
I started buying DVDs in 1999 when I got my first player for my birthday (cost $300, now you can that same player for like $40. Though it lasted damn near 11 years with no problems, just crapped out on my a few weeks ago). I was only 15 at the time so I didn't have a job. Got maybe 7 or 8 titles in 1999, started collecting actively in 2000 when I got my first job!
2007 with BD and HD-DVD, BD was first in March and then in May I got my HD-DVD player.
First movie on:
DVD: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (still have it)
BD: Scooby-Doo
HD-DVD: Three way tie since I bought three at the same time as the player: The Mummy, The Mummy Returns & Land of the Dead
