In need of much needed help in selling my big DVD collection ......

I have come to a cross road where my DVDs are losing value everyday as the Blu-ray discs prices are coming down. I am in debate how to get the most value out of them, thinking selling them in genres on ebay, not sure selling them as a whole will net me what I want. Or perhaps a local ebay sale where they would have to pick them up because shipping will be a costly and a time consuming effort but I only get a small % of bidders doing it that way. I have roughly 440 DVDs and about 20 tv seires give or take. I would really like some advice from someone who has recently done this on how/where would be the best place to make the most deniro on them. Please see below the list of my dvds, any advice would be mucho appreciated my dvd brothers.

My advice is to not buy dvd's for their monetary value but for their entertainment value. :)

thanks gratenberg, your insight is just as witty/clever/powerful as your signature implys and to top it off you did a smiley face color me impress. It makes no sense in thinking I bought 440 DVDs for their monetary value, but it does make sense to get as much money as I can get out of them before DVDs becoming a dying fad, this is the world we live in, you either swim or drown, but that's just like my opinion man.

re: In need of much needed help in selling my big DVD collection ......

your best bet is to probably sell them off on here/to collectors because you will get nothing for them at a store/pawn shop. but you are in the wrong thread for that. i guess you could try ebay as well but that's if you feel like dealing with that b.s.
are you planing on upgrading these all to blu or something? just wondering why you are getting rid of your entire (or a big chunk of) your collection?

re: In need of much needed help in selling my big DVD collection ......

The problem with the question you pose is that if you're concerned with getting top value for them, it'll require some effort--going through ebay, selling them in the exchange forum here, etc. As dkedvd mentioned, you could take them all to one place or try to sell them as one big lot elsewhere, but your return on them would be much smaller per DVD.

My wife usually has a yard sale each spring and I've had some success selling some DVDs that way. Of course, that's not for everyone.

re: In need of much needed help in selling my big DVD collection ......

well I have a 720p lcd I am going to sell as well, so with that money and the money I net from the dvds Im going to get a nice bigger 1080p lcd along with a bluray player and only upgrade about half I would say if that. It's a real bummer though but you have to keep up with the times or it will pass you by.

If you say so... I have 3814 tiles in my collection and I only plan to upgrade 50 of those at the most. Hell I still have VHS in my collection (mainly hard to find titles or titles not on DVD). And who knows what wont ever make it on to blu. It would suck to sell of a film you really enjoy only to find out in 15 years that DVD is the one format I will ever see (I still kick myself for selling some of my VHS tapes that have never seen the light of day on DVD). But I guess if you plan to re-buy everything from your collection that you really want then it kinda makes sense to sell off your DVD collection. You could try a flea market. DVDs sell like crazy at all the flea markets around me. They go between $3.00 & $5.00 a piece. You can rent a table/lot for about $10.00 - $20.00.

Funny you should say that because I have about 20-30 DVDs that i didn't list because im pretty sure they will not get the upgrade , I don't think movies like California Split will get a blu treatment. I did a little homework these are all the movies that I know that on are blu ray or soon will be and the ones that it's ok if bluray doesn't give a face lift to. many thanks for your help man

This is the way I do it. Upgrade the titles that are the better overrall edition on Blu. Don't sell the titles that aren't on Blu yet should you want to wait to see if and when it hits blu. Example: Predator 2 disc vs. Blu-Ray. 2 disc has all the features while the Blu doesn't. BUT if you're only into the movie over features..well than Predator Blu might be for you.

Lighten the fuck up. No need to take a giant shit.

And to answer your question: put an ad on Craigslist. You won't get top dollar... anywhere. E-bay, garage sale, pawn shop, Craigslist, etc. People aren't going to give you top dollar. They're looking for a deal.

At best, most DVDs will net you $2-3 at places like Half.com, Amazon, eBay. You might have a few rares in there, but be warned, you won't get much from them.

Or, if you don't want to piece out each one individually, sell to SeconSpin.com where you input each title, they give you a value, you mail it to them, and they send you a check/Paypal back. You're bound to get at least $1k for everything you listed.

re: In need of much needed help in selling my big DVD collection ......

Try doing a yard/garage sale with a "$5 each" sign.

You could even categorize your DVDs into groups: Special Editions; Limited Editions; etc., at a higher price of $8 or $10 each.

It would also help to have a note saying "or best offer," because some people will try to negotiate even if you indicate otherwise. Some people won't try to dicker at all.

Good luck.

I'd be careful with some of those directors' cuts. There's a few (i.e. Lethal Weapons/Almost Famous/Sling Blade) that have only appeared on Blu in the theatrical versions.

Though I have to say, I believe you'll regret selling that collection. DVD's are fully compatible with Blu Ray players & once you go Blu you'll be more interested in buying new releases than stuff you've already had. Are you really going to re-buy Beerfest?

Personally I consider Blu Rays more of a continuation of my collection than an outright replacement of the entire thing.

If I understand this statement correctly, I can't say I understand the rationale. Are you saying that you are willing to part with a DVD you have, to get around $2 for selling, so you can rebuy it eventually on BR for much more when there is limited benefit in the upgrade. Based on the number of titles that would fit that category that's a lot of cash going out with very little benefit coming in.

I'm with some of the others, the value now of your DVDs vs. what you will get later isn't probably all that significant. Especially, if you are planning to rebuy later in BR. Now if you are trying to get rid of titles to help upgrade equipment with the idea that most are not worth rebuying then that is different.

Just for reference, I have a 1080p 92" projection system with around 1000 movies and 250 TV season sets on DVD. I project at most, upgrading about 20% to BR and will be happy maintaining the rest on DVD. There really is no reason to purge an entire existing DVD collection for BR unless you don't mind taking the financial loss or you really decided that the films and TV sets you purchased weren't worth owning on any format.

It saddens me to see people ditch their entire DVD collection when they go blu, is there really a reason to upgrade the majority of those movies to blu-ray?

re: In need of much needed help in selling my big DVD collection ......

List them on Amazon, ebay or trade them at wherehouse.com. Looking at the list, I can assure you that you are not going to get too much money, since most of those DVDs sell for less than half of its retail price if they are new, so expect to get less with the used ones.

I agree because for every DVD you sell off for $2, you have to replace it for an average of $10-$12 a piece. That's a lot of $$ for marginally better picture and sound.

And then when 3D Blu-ray hits the market in the next few years we get to do
the whole dance again.

Maybe, but I would be surprised if the 3D thing really results in the same kind of turnover. It's more a gimmick and reason to create more sales...it would be another 30 years before a 3D type(will be called something else) system really has a wow factor.

Do yourself a favor and buy a top-dollar upconverting blu-ray player and keep your DVDs.

Replacing DVDs with BDs makes no sense to me either. If you want to keep the film, keep it on DVD, which will play fine on your BD player.

I don't plan on 'upgrading' more than a few titles, and most BDs leave off at least some of the DVD special features.

Yup. Unless you are going front projector/100"+ screen, you won't see a huge difference in upconverted vs. blu-ray on an LCD TV.

I've got nearly a thousand DVDs and there are very few titles that I'm outright planning on upgrading. More along the lines of: as I go on, I will lean towards Blu for new titles. But even then there'll be exceptions, like TV shows I already have part of on DVD, I doubt I'll go Blu for the rest.

You will not get back a pittance of the money you put into your DVDs, and you'll have none of the "sentimental" investment ("I found that rare, collector's edition DVD in a pawnshop underneath ten copies of Big Momma's House" kind of thing).

Enjoy what you have, upgrade your A-list stuff if you must, but otherwise don't go nuts thinking about it.

Yeah, "marginally better".
Deals are there to be had. Amazon has great sales on Blu. But it's all where you look. I don't pay more than $15 for new releases on Blu. I have sold off 500 DVD titles sinced I made the switch. All titles that had a blu counterpart were traded in if the blu was a upgrade, or cheap. I still have 800 DVD titles because of various reasons. I have no problem upgrading for picture or audio, or both.

I have sold my DVD's to wherehouse .com. You have to realise that you are never going to get "fair" value. I would also try some of the other suggestions of the forum members.

In the last few weeks I've traded in about 300 dvds for for maybe 20 used Blu-rays and some cash. Most of this was a much needed thinning of the herd and some discs that were replaced by Blu-rays.

I've come to realize I don't want or need the 1,000 plus titles I have. I'm being much more selective in my buying and I'm only rebuying BD of movies that I think will visually be much more impressive on BD. Trying to replace them all would be beyond stupid.

It's threads like this that make me shake my head in wonder at the "the future of Blu is so bright I've just gotta wear shades" folks. Damn near every single person who has responded to this thread has spouted some sort of variation of "no way will I be buying as much Blu as I did SD". If people are truly not going to be buying as much then the future of Blu actually looks pretty bleak. I mean, yeah, we'll always get the latest piece of crap the studios have churned out and the AFI Top 100-type stuff, but after that it's going to get pretty damn thin.

Sorry. Back on topic.

Hey, you have a few I wouldn't mind buying. If That's what you're doing. I'd pay for the shipping to, if you'd combine a few titles. Plus You could only send me the actual disc and artwork. I wouldn't need the case. That will save $$$ on shipping. cases only cost 20 cents to buy at any store. I got a Sony Blu-Ray for Xmas and I love how they make DVD's look.

I've got to disagree on this. There's more than just a little difference.

I'd put a list up on craigslist and just wait. If something's sells really high, try ebay or amazon. Ebay's a gamble since the person just has to say they never got it, then they get the money back from paypal. The thing to remember is most aren't going to sell for much so sell what you can through places that don't charge fees, like craigslist, and enjoy the stuff until it's sold.

I'd just keep the stuff as part of my collection and get rid of stuff as I replace and upgrade.

Even if you get every title at a "deal" of say, $10 each. You sell off your 500 DVDs at $2 a pop you get back $1000. You turn around and drop $5000 to replace them with Blu-ray ($5000 is an extremely conservative estimate, at this point)

Then you have to consider the $5000+ you spent your 500 DVDs over the years as well.

The bottom line cost of your new Blu-ray collection is going to be at least $9000+

Is having a couple of years of satisfaction knowing you have the best consumer video format available really worth $9000+?

To each their own, I guess it depends on one's priorities. I'm doubtful replacing every title is going to a trend to sweep the industry.

eBay almost always sides with the buyer so DC is worthless. They can simply put a "not as described" and boom, you get screwed.

One thing that many people never factor into the cost of selling their discs is their time. Sure, you could use multiple options and sell things individually on ebay and make more than a buck or two per title after fees, but what is your time worth? Any DVD that is going to net me less than $30 is not worth the hassle. I'll just give it away to family or friends.

I think the OPs reasons for selling the collection are wrong, but if I was going to sell a large collection, I'd sell in bulk. Sure he might only make $500, and maybe triple that if he took the time to sell things individually, but the dozens of hours he'd put into the effort to sell them that way have to be factored in.

I definitely agree with this. If I have a few I know aren't going to bring much then I give them away. But if I have put aside enough over a period of time due to just not wanting them anymore or having upgraded then I sell in bulk to Newtownvideo. Usually, I will have some older title that will bring over $2 a piece and if I have something like 16 or more of these I get free shipping and insurance thrown in.

I just don't have the time or energy to want to deal with selling them individually or advertising them in any way.

Meta, the hard truth is you've simply waited too long. I came to the same conclusion four yrs ago just as Blu was on the horizon, and over the last four yrs thru various means have unloaded 300 dvds, with about 50 remaining (which have no blu release in sight). I used DVDplanet for the bulk of my trade-ins... that has since dried up. Right now I'd recommend DVDEmpire for online bulk trade-ins. I also sold ones on Amazon that were going for a price that was worth my time (Munich SE, Toy Story box).

However, if I had hundreds of DVDs right now I'd opt for a garage/yard sale. You'll likely get more from people than you will selling on Amazon or doing mass trade-ins, and it'll be easy and fast. The other option is to only get rid of a DVD once you buy the Blu-Ray, that'll ensure you can enjoy the movies you have now.

Problem is that paypal doesn't care about it. They need to be able to see online, that it was delivered to that address. DC only shows something was delivered somewhere. They don't take screenshots either.

Ebay. Be sure to state it's condition, and state so if you combine shipping. Maybe $3.00 for the first DVD and $1.00 for each addiitional DVD.
