The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)

Re: The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)
It's been quite a very slow challenge for me thus far. I've made it a goal to watch movies I've never seen yet, but that means that I have to wait for the desired movie to air on TV or arrive in the mail via netflix. Looks like I'll have to ravage through some old vhs-recorded movies to see if anything pops up.

I'm focusing on Best Picture Winners/Nominees for this challenge. I think I read someone else make the comment (either recently or in last year's discussion thread), but man most of these films are long.

That might have been me last year while I was watching every best picture winner. Some of them seemed to last days.

Re: The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)
I used to think Dance Direction was the most useless Academy Award category, but seeing the number of musicals in those years makes it acceptable.
Now I think the most useless Academy Award category is Assistant Director, but at least it was only around for five years. How are you supposed to know whether he did a good job? The first year, 1934, the nominees were not even associated with films just the studio. The Direcotr award never matched up with Assistant Director award and most of the time the nominees did not even match up in the other four years.

Watched Little Children earlier today. Amazing film, should have received a best picture nomination in addition to the three it got. Kate Winslet was great as always, and Jackie Earle Haley was Oscar worthy.

uggh, the start of these challenges always seem to coincide with when I am busy and can't watch a lot of stuff. I have a big fat goose egg in this challenge so far.

Just watched Pan's Labyrinth on BD and it was amazing. That's what great storytelling is all about. Looked flawless on BD as well.

^ the excessive DNR applied to the bluray transfer didn't bother you ... (actually I haven't yet watched my bluray copy, yet, but that's the general flaw 'AV peeps' have pointed out)

Looking through my collection, I've found a few films that thoroughly deserved Academy Award nominations but were shut out, like Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy and Neil Jordan's The Long Good Friday.
Seriously, Peyton Place and Sayonara were Best Picture nominees in 1957, the same year that the far superior Sweet Smell of Success, Paths of Glory and A Face in the Crowd were denied.
C'mon, not even a Best Actor nomination for Burt Lancaster as the sadistic JJ Hunziger? I call shenanigans!

I'll have to play a bit of cath-up later as I'm off to visit the girlfriend this weekend. Might squeeze in a film there, but not sure. She does have a copy of Slumdog Millionaire which I haven't seen yet.
More updates soon.

As with the Little Children praise, I felt the same after watching Half Nelson. I went into that one expecting only a good performance from Gosling, but both the lead actress (Shareeka Epps) and the entire film left me captivated.

One interesting thing about this month is that we'll all likely see more overtures and intermissions than the 11 other months combined.

I've enjoyed a number of quality films while focusing on Best Picture winners/nominees. Finally discovered the first one I didn't call for at all--Midnight Cowboy.

I really have to start shaking, but between a visit to my girlfriend's and Olympic hockey starting tomorrow, I'll be lucky to accomplish my goal. Doesn't mean I won't cram as many in as I can during the final weekend, though.
Still have some of this year's nominees and In Memorium picks to check out too.
