If it won anything from that decade. Same with the rating section too. Though if you want to challenge yourself you could just make Best Pictures only.

I've been watching a ton of movies that would qualify, I just wanted to watch these movies. Watching Ghostbusters right now!

Thanks. That was my initial thinking, but I wanted to be sure. I have failed miserably everytime I've attemped a checklist, so I I don't need to make it any harder than it already is.

Does IMDB have an In Memoriam list? I was searching their site but couldn't find one.

I've been actively trying to not watch qualifying films the last month, but keep messing up. Watched The Constant Gardener last night, somehow convinced that it didn't get any noms/wins. But while watching it realized that this was exactly the type of film the Academy loves.

The Oscar site has one. Looks like it shows people who have died since Feb 1, 2009.

Cool! I added that list to the first post as well. I wonder if that's the list they will use on the show. I assume it is.

Thanks. The February thing explains why Ricardo Montalban isn't on the list. I'm still watching Star Trek II.

I really want in!! Did well with the horror challenge this past year, and this sounds even more fun.

Forget if I mentioned this back then, but you did a great job on your list. Whenever I sit down to write little reviews of what I watched, I decide to just watch more stuff instead.

I wish this began on a Fri. Fri. and Sat. are my main movie watching days. And this Sunday is all about the Superbowl.

Re: The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)

will these threads become stickies?

I'm going to mostly be focusing on Academy-nominees and winners that I haven't seen, or haven't seen in a very long time. There are just so many great films and categories to choose from. It's a great way to enrich the awards themselves.

I'll probably watch a few familiar favorites with commentaries that I haven't heard yet, too. And, there are some current nominees in theatres that I've still got to get around to. I have one best picture nominee left to see for this year's 10, and I'll look forward to that.

Personal goals:
1. To see OVER 50 titles and beat my October Halloween challenge record.
2. To see a film from every category.
3. To see a film frome every decade.
4. To update my list with reviews and comments regularly.
5. To provide a few IN MEMORIUM picks for favorite personalities lost (Dom DeLuise, Patrick Swayze, for sure)
6. To peruse and enjoy everyone else's lists.
I do hope to get around to some of the other checklist goals as well as I can.

For me, this is half the fun. Looking over other people's lists and reading their reviews/comments.

I guess I can safely watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs tonight since it was not nominated for an Oscar and from what I can tell would not fit in the "In Memoriam" option.

I'm aiming for watching 20 films that I have never seen before and watching the DVDs that I haven't seen since the 2007 challenge.

LOL. My wife laughs because I fill up the DVR with all of my stuff, but then when I need room, I start asking her if there's anything of hers I can delete.

Re: The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)

I sat out of the Holiday Challenge (got burned out and was super busy at the time) but have been looking forward to this challenge as well. Loved the October Horror Challenge and won't come anywhere near those numbers, but gonna have fun with this one again.

I will second that it would have been more convenient for me to start this on Friday, but that's part of the challenge I guess!

Have fun everyone and look forward to looking at your lists/reviews/comments!

Re: The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)

I'm really excited about this challenge! I just bought tix to screenings of '"El Secreto de Sus Ojos", "Un Prophete" and "The Milk of Sorrow" at Nat Geo. "Ajami" opens at the Avalon during the challenge - as does "The White Ribbon" at Landmark - the screenings of the Animated & Live Action Shorts down at E Street... and a DVD copy of "The Secret of Kelis" is coming from the UK - phew....I'm exhausted already!

oh and a ton of blurays sitting in a pile itching to be watched.

Unlike the Horror Movie Challenge that begins on the first of the month, this challenge always begins one month before the Oscars air. Which is usually a Sunday (unless it's a Leap Year, and usually that doesn't even come into effect because usually the show is on before the end of February). Believe me, the last few days I've been dying to watch some of my favorites, but I've held off and slipped up quite a few times. But no matter when I start it, I would still be dying to watch the movies BEFORE the Challenge begins so...

are there 'Wild Cards' for this challenge? - I want to included films that were not technically nominated (or won for that matter) but where a director or an actor body of work was honored by the Academy

The Wild Card option is the "In Memorium" option. You can see the rule on the first post.

I think your idea was brought up a year or two ago and it was decided against because there are just tons of titles you can see and now with the new wild card option it opens even more titles to see for this challenge.

Re: The 4th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (2/7 - 3/7)

the "In Memorium" doesn't seem very fair, the actor might not have had any nominations or wins, but a Academy recognition and 'honor' award isn't valid - hmmmm.... I don't agree, an example would be like Harold Lloyd or Satyajit Ray film. If you allow only say, four Wild Cards including the "In Memorium" that seems like a fair inclusion - it'd be interesting to see what folks would watch and include on their lists.
