Warner Brothers New Releases Now Delayed 28 days on Netflix (New Deal)

Warners, Netflix agree to new-release delay
Deal also increases the amount of catalog titles on Netflix
By Carl DiOrio

Jan 6, 2010, 02:08 PM ET
Warner Bros. and Netflix on Wednesday announced a dramatic pact that will delay new releases reaching Netflix's online rental customers for 28 days, while boosting the number of Warners' catalog titles Netflix will be allowed to offer.

The deal is sure to have broad ripple effects in the home entertainment industry. But for now, the 28-day policy will apply only to Netflix.

As part of the agreement, Netflix will get its delayed rental titles on less expensive terms than previously. Warners -- which says it's instituting the changes to help protect revenue from disc sales -- estimates that the policy shift will end up being revenue-neutral for the studio.

"These new agreements build upon the strong relationship we have had with Netflix for nearly 10 years," Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders said. "The 28-day window allows us to continue making our most popular films available to Netflix subscribers while supporting our sell-through product."

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos called the pact a "win-win" for both companies.

"We're able to help an important business partner meet its objectives while improving service levels for our members by acquiring substantially more units than in the past after a relatively short sell-through window," Sarandos said. " At the same time, we're able to extend the range of choices available to be streamed to our members."
This sucks. After 28 days, people will have already found other ways to watch it. Guess I will have to visit my local Mom and Pop store for any WB releases. How many big releases are upcoming?

Can't you just wait until NF gets them? Consider it the real release date for your purposes. If you really cared to watch it before then, you would have. What's 4 more weeks? It's not like there's going to be new spoilers to avoid.

I guess if you want to look at it that way. From a business standpoint, It's definitely beneficial to Netflix as they are now getting the titles cheaper.

I just glanced over the next few weeks and WB doesn't really have any big titles coming out except maybe the Time Traveler's Wife and The Box.

I don't have much of a problem with this. I'm just more curious to see what some of the WB titles that are being added will be.

Re: Warner Brothers New Releases Now Delayed 28 days on Netflix (New Deal)

I don't have a huge problem with this personally. I generally purchase any new releases that I have seen and want to see again or blind buy things I'm sure I'll like (though blind buying is waaaay down for me). I can wait to see most new movies I skipped in theatres and there are so many movies to watch as it is! Plus more streaming content gets from me.

However, I can see where some people would have a problem with this. It seems the most common question I am asked if I recommend/explain Netflix is "Doesn't it take extra time for the new movies to be released?" or something along those lines...

meh

The only time new releases have been a big deal for me is if I was planning to buy the DVD anyway. If this deal helps Netflix save money and keeps my unlimited streaming costing only $9 a month, I am all for it.

And, of course, those savings won't be passed down to us, the consumers.

Exactly. If people really want to see the movie, they will find some other means of watching the movie. Otherwise, it's not all that big a deal.

Giving this more thought, is it possible that this is the first step moving away from DVDs and towards streaming? Seems like they are screwing over their core customers in order to compete strongly with the streaming companies.

Agreed. I don't rent any new releases anyway, so for me this is pretty much a non-issue.

It would be cool if the catalog title boost meant that some of the Warner Archive showed up on Watch Instantly. I've been really impressed with that service since I got another PS3 a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately, WB provides very little HD content (unlike Sony, for example, who is providing lots of cool catalog HD stuff.)

I hope this means at least netflix will buy enough BD new releases to really cover people who have in it their list as they say in the article. As Im waiting weeks for new BD releases already.

Will they add a new designation "EXTRA EXTRA EXTREMELY LONG WAIT" when a movie is not available now?

So if you want to see a new WB release that you didn't see in theatres, your just going wait until it drops to $10 and blind buy it?

No, I'm going to wait the 28 days... Besides, nowadays there are almost NO movies these days that I am interested in seeing. If am interested, I'll go see them in the theaters. I see a movie in the theaters MAYBE 2 or 3 times a year. That's how much I don't like most of the stuff Hollywood is putting out these days.

Another reason to not use Netflix.

You're probably the exception to the rule though (not liking new movies).

Three different threads for this topic, I think (also in HD Talk and Store Forum, which seems most appropriate)

Yeah I noticed that Gizmo posted the same story in HD Talk 2 hours later.

Now that I really think about it, this isn't as bad as it sounds.

It saves Netflix some $$$ and adds some more calalogue titles to their streaming section. I noticed a bunch of WB titles that were in the streaming section expired January 1st and hopefully this brings them back.

If I really want to see The Box, which comes out in February, I can visit my local Mom and Pop store and pay the $1.50-$2 for the DVD or Blu Ray rental. Otherwise, I will wait the extra 28 days and the movie will hopefully be available.

Eh, while I get plenty of milage from my Netflix account, I tend to use it for titles I know I won't be able to find at the local Blockbuster or Redbox, so I think I'll be able to manage just fine...

How would you see this as competing with streaming?

What they want to do is implement this kind of thing rental-wide, meaning it would essentially get released in stores a month before it's available for rental, so that you are more likely to buy it.
