Re: Star Wars "Correct" Watching Sequence

As mentioned before: 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6 is the proper order to maintain all the "shocks"

Spoiler:
(save the brother/sister relationship, but that's heavily alluded to in ESB).

You get the awe and wonder of ANH.
You get the shock of the father reveal in ESB.
You get the back-story and fall of Anakin in the prequels.
You get the redemption and fulfillment of the prophecy/Chosen One in RotJ.

4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3.

I recently rewatched them in numerical order, 1-6. I know everything so it worked out alright, but I'd never start a new person with 1. They'd probably refuse to watch anymore, plus they'd lose so much of the OT by watching the PT first.

Just for the record, if we're going to rank them, 5, 4, 6, 3, 2, 1.

Always this answer.

Shouldn't this be in Movie Talk?

I agree. I know more people who like 5 over 4 than the other way around. Just throwing in a plug for the one I like :)
Actually you wouldn't need to watch 4 again. It would be easy to go from 3 to 5 if 4 had already been watched.

I would want the person watching for the first time to have to wait as long as possible to find things out. That's the reason I said 4, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6.
If you watch 4 then 5 you'll already know what the whole point of 1, 2 and 3 are leading up to. No surprise at the end of 3 as for 2 1/2+ movies you were just waiting for it to happen.

Spoiler:
The only shock you would miss would be the father reveal. The person watching knows (thinks they know) from #4 that Lukes father was betrayed and murdered by Darth Vader. He/she would be waiting for Darth to appear and for that to happen sometime in 1-3. The whole time thinking Anakin will always be a good guy. Both are big reveals/surprises. I wouldn't mind them then watching #5 and waiting to see how Luke finds out.

After Lucas' antics you can tell that the Emperor is the Chancellor from the prequel which could give that away if you watch 5 first.
The Emperor flows better as I don't think he was in 4 (memory's going).
They wouldn't have to wonder why Vader was kind of sympathetic concerning Luke when he first talks to the emperor in 5 (if they catch it at all).
Yoda would flow better, going in to seclusion at the end of 3 and found in seclusion in 5.
This would also make the Boba Fett character flow a little better, no adult to kid back to adult.

Re: Star Wars "Correct" Watching Sequence

Spoiler:
The prequel trilogy isn't about the birth of the twins. It's about the fall of Anakin, the Jedi, and the republic as well as the rise of the Empire. The courtship of Padme and Anakin and the birth/loss of the "child" serves the fall of Anakin. Therefore his story only makes sense when you know he is at the core of Vader.

Spoiler:
Yes, the prequels are about everything you said. After watching number 4 you already know the Jedi and the republic fall, and the Empire rises. I don't think I'd also want to know that Anakin's responsible before seeing 1-3? Let a first time watcher only know that Darth Vader is the one responsible. I wouldn't want to know too much about a movie(s) before I watch it. What fun is that? If I was watching for the first time, I'd think, here is a guy who's going to give his life while fighting on the side of good. Then I'd be surprised when he turns out to be the one who's responsible for its demise. I think Anakins story still makes sense. Now I can watch 5, where he learns he has a son and watch how he deals with it.

Re: Star Wars "Correct" Watching Sequence

I think this is really splitting hairs. For me it hinges on the reveal at the end of ESB where the prequel trilogy falls

Re: Star Wars "Correct" Watching Sequence

I know what you mean. It would be nice if you could watch in an order where neither of the big two reveals get spoiled (near end in 3 and end in 5).

Now that's interesting. Two two movie buildups, then the climaxes. Not bad at all.

I'd go I-VI with the older Clone Wars animated movie between II and III. I'm not sure if it is cannon though... originally I think it was but then they did a 2nd CGI series (which I never saw much of) so I'm confused.

As for spoiling the "reveals" of the series if you watch them in numerical order... what adult born and raised in the United States under the age of 40 has not heard of them before? It's like someone watching the first episode of Star Trek today for the first time and being amazed after Kirk survives each near death encounter. Who doesn't know that Kirk was the main character in the rest of the series as well as like a dozen more films?
