Eyes of Fire is the best horror western I've seen. Unfortunately, it's only available on VHS and a pan & scan R2 DVD. If you want a less serious take, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat is a lot of fun.

On another note, I've been reading the lists, and it's nice to see that most who've watched Deadgirl have enjoyed it. I watched it again for the challenge myself.

i don't see how The Substitute (Vikaren) wouldn't be considered horror. sure, it wasn't gore drenched and bloody, but
creepy, with tense atmosphere
child terror and endangerment
monster/alien from another world
chicken eater

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Undead or Alive is on Netflix Watch Instantly, so I may give that a shot tonight.

I know it probably wasn't clear since I called it twisted and depressing, but I actually liked it.

Spending the weekend at my parents house, and I only brought a couple movies with me, and I can't watch them until my parents go to bed. So it's gonna be a slow weekend for me.

My list is going to take a hit today as i'm hosting an all-day football party.
Probably won't get any movies in today at all.

Watched The Return last night. Not sure how I feel about it. I liked the atmosphere and setting, not sure what else. I think it is the slowest-paced film I've ever seen...

Weird thing, I had It's Alive on my DVR from when it was on IFC a few months back. Before it started they had a little promo for it, I was thinking looks good. So it started and after about 10-20 mins I realize no psycho baby here, turned out to be this piece of crap.

I have it and I liked it,but it is a strange little movie with weird pacing.

Another horror-western is Bloodrayne 2: Deliverance and it would count for the Uwe Boll item on the checklist.

I liked the fact that it felt like an Asian Horror film despite the fact it wasn't directed by or starred any Asians.

I agree, and I think that's why I liked it so much. My ex didn't like it,and when I asked him why, he said "I don't like Japanese horror remakes," and when I told him it wasn't an Asian horror remake, he wouldn't believe me. It just has that feeling, that idea of being captured in spiraling evil and having to avenge the death of some spirit before you can find rest.

BLOOD BEACH (1980) is today's video review. Lots of beach, but they forgot the blood.

It did have that Asian horror feel. I think maybe my biggest problem is I don't subscribe to the belief of how it ended (the subject matter). I have nothing against that line of thought, just don't personally believe in it.

Also, I'll spoiler this next part for those that haven’t seen it:

Spoiler:
If Joanna is the vehicle of re-incarnation, then what happened to the Joanna that died? Was she just out of luck because she wasn't part of the love story? That's my biggest beef. Small detail, I know.

Thanks for the blast from the past. I remember Blood Beach well! Actually, not how bad the movie was, but rather how intrigued I was as a kid by the movie poster and the thought of a beach swallowing folks up.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I watched Killers of the Sea this morning. It's a horror movie/documentary in the sense that it was from a time when we didn't know too much about ocean life. It's one of those truth is scarier than fiction type films.

I learned:

Whales that don't have teeth don't eat men.
Naturally, whales with teeth love to eat men.
Flipper and his kind are man eaters.
When attacking one of those man eating dolphins, keep it's head pointed up. This will prevent it from diving down deep to drown you.
Turtles love nothing more than to chew up and snap your air hose when diving.
The only weakness of an octopus is it's ink sack. If you pierce it, the octopus will die.
Sometimes an octopus will become so hungry that it'll attack and eat one if it's own tentacles.
Turtles can live without brains.

The entire thing was just bizarre and I could only try to imagine the terror people felt as they watched the guy dive into the water time and time again, to battle a shark, dolphin, or octopus.

Then you have scenes suck as where the black cook, named Dark Evolution who had a peg leg, caught fish the old fashioned way, with a hook and line. He catches some big fish, and as he's carrying it, the fish slips out of his arms and back into the water where he then jumps in after it.

Just got back from Paranormal Activity and it was a blast. I was very surprised I was not let down from all the hype. Its not the scariest movie ever but it was creepy as hell.

Some misc. thoughts on the lists:

17) I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle (1990) - A "vampire demon" possesses a motorcycle which is subsequently purchased by a bike messenger. The vampire motorcycle goes on a killing spree, C-3PO performs an exorcism, then some other stuff happens. Could've been worse.
Sounds cool to me. I’ll have to check this one out.

- I remember enjoying this movie a lot more when I saw it 10? years ago or so. This was directed by Sam Raimi and I saw a lot of Evil Dead type effects/elements. These elements worked for the 3 Evil Dead movies, but for a bigger budget movie like this it just didn't work for me. For the most part, I try to not pick apart movies too much, especially if they have good stories, but I just have always had a problem with believability of people being made up to look like other people. There are just so many things that wouldn't work it bothers me.
I’ve been looking forward to watching this for the challenge, but your write-up doesn’t exactly sell me on it. Hmmm…

I like haunted house movies. I’ll look into this one.

**** - One of my favorite Horror flicks from the past 10 years. John Jarratt's performance is legend. I broke out my year-and-a-half old HD-DVD that I hadn't even opened until tonight and it looked stunning.
The cover to this movie always unsettles me. Your great review makes me think I need to re-consider it.

Last time I saw this was before I became a fan of The Office, so it's really wierd seeing Rainn Wilson as "Fishboy". I really can't stand this movie, there are annoying cutscenes throughout the entire movie. I'm ok with a "Texas Chainsaw" type of movie of a wacked out family that kills, but then near the end, there's a whole elaborate underground dungeon of demons that just makes no sense to me. The last twenty minutes ruin the entire movie in my opinion. 2/10
I couldn’t agree with you more.

I forgot all about this movie. Thanks for the reminder!

Wow. I'm not sure what other word to sum up my feelings on The Orphanage. Beautiful, terrifying, sad. I read a review where the author said this movie was crafted in a style that would make Alfred Hitchcock proud. High praise indeed, and completely accurate. My head is still spinning thinking of this movie, and it will take a while to sort out all my thoughts and to get it out of my mind. This one stays with you...haunts you if you will. Very nice video quality on the Blu, and the audio is absolutely awesome...even with my current lack of lossless capabilities. The surround effects will have you afraid to look around the room, and there are some subtle but extreme (if that makes sense) LFE moments that will really show off a good subwoofer. If you haven't seen this, go get it immediately. Just be prepared for a very emotional journey, especially if you are a parent. Outstanding movie.
Cool. You have me sold on this.

I'm currently watching some of those Inner Sanctum movies. They're not too bad. I'm glad Pillow of Death is last in the box set. Good lead-in to tomorrow.

Happy Death Bed Eve, everyone! (not to take anything away from Cemetery Man - just excited for the "bed" movie)

the review that sums it up forme is the 10 yr old kid that got up after it was over and said "what the hell"and left with his mom
