Park Chan Wook's The Vengeance Trilogy (8 Disc Set) - 11/24/09

Press release from Palisades Tartan popped up in my mail today. I had originally thought that this release was just going to be the three 1-discs with a box set sleeve over it, but I guess not.

The Ultimate Park Chan-Wook Vengeance Trilogy Box-Set
Palisades Tartan’s 8-Disc VENGEANCE TRILOGY box-set available in stores November 24th

LOS ANGELES — September 28, 2009 — For Immediate Release —You’ve been asking, we’ve been planning and this November Palisades Tartan will release the most exciting, impressive and comprehensive Vengeance Trilogy box-set the world has ever seen! Featuring 8-discs and more special features then any other set on the planet (including the Korean version), celebrity essays as well as a few surprises, Palisades Tartan will release Park Chan-Wook’s VENGEANCE TRILOGY November 24th in DVD stores across the country.

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE is the first film in Park Chan-Wook’s acclaimed Vengeance trilogy. The sister of a simple and deaf factory worker, Ryu, falls ill and needs a kidney transplant, however he is not a match so he looks to the black market which he can’t afford. After being fired from his job, his rebel girlfriend suggests that he kidnap the child of his former boss, Park. When the girl accidentally dies, her father seeks vengeance for her death.

OLDBOY is Park Chan-Wook’s classic genre-defining revenge tale of a man who’s wrongly been imprisoned for 15 years and is then suddenly released. Given money and a cell phone, he’s challenged to discover who incarcerated him in the first place, but he only has five days to uncover the truth. Even with a mysterious young girl to help him, his tortures have just begun. Cannes-winner championed by Tarantino, OLDBOY regularly appeared in top ten best movie polls across the country and is listed as one of the all-time best films as rated by IMDB users.

LADY VENGEANCE, the final film in the trilogy was created by Chan-Wook for his daughter. After being wrongfully convicted of kidnapping and murdering a young child, a beautiful young woman (Lee Young-ae) is imprisoned for 13 years. While in prison she gains the respect and loyalty of her fellow cellmates, all the while plotting her vendetta on the man responsible (OLDBOY’s Choi Min-Sik). Upon her release she sets in motion an elaborate plan of retribution, but what she discovers is a truth so horrifying, even revenge doesn’t seem punishment enough.

Director Park Chan-Wook’s most recent film THIRST won the Jury Prize at Cannes (2009) and was released in the US earlier this year by Focus Features. All three films in his celebrated Vengeance trilogy collection have garnered an impressive 28 Film Festival wins at prestigious venues including Cannes, Venice, Chicago, Fantasia, Stockholm, Hong Kong and the Sitges International Film Festival to name a few.

Each film is recorded in their original language (Korean) and offer English and Spanish subtitles. Each title is presented in anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1. Special features include an essay on each film by celebrated filmmakers, actors and writers, including Eli Roth. Additional features include but are not limited to: audio commentary by Park Chan-Wook and actor Ryoo Seung-wan, behind the scenes, “The Process of Mr. Vengeance”, “My Boksu Story”, storyboards, photo gallery, filmographies, film notes and crew interviews (SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE); three audio commentaries, five behind-the-scenes featurettes, “Le Grand Prix at Cannes” and deleted scenes with commentary (OLDBOY); regular and “Fade-To-White” versions, character interviews (Lee Geum Ja, Prof. Baek), “Prisoners”, “Families”, “Lady Vengeance at the 62nd Venice Film Festival”, trailer, film notes, making-of and deleted scenes (LADY VENGEANCE).

I feel like the release would mention if there were digital copies. If there is a digital copy disc, maybe one disc could hold all three movies on it. That would mean two discs each for the Sympathy movies and the disc contents of the tin for Oldboy.

This is interesting. The three-disc Oldboy set was packed. I'm taking a guess here and this will be the breakdown.

Mr. Vengeance:
Disc 1: Movie
Disc 2: Special Features

Oldboy:
Disc 1: Movie
Disc 2: Making of Doc.
Disc 3: Additional Features

Lady Vengeance:
Disc 1: Movie
Disc 2: Fade to B/W Version
Disc 3: Special Features

wow! what a great set and a fan of this trilogy's wet dream. i don't know. the only thing i don't have is Mr. Vengeance and currently can't play the LV fade to B/W because it is only in DTS so that is worth considering as i was looking for a version that wasn't only DTS. and really MSRP only $49.99?? that seems like such a steal.

also, is this listed on the site yet?

I only own the 3 disc Oldboy...I'll probably bite on this one if it includes that version's features. Never seen the other two though I've always wanted to, especially Lady Vengeance.

Great news. I've been holding off getting these in hopes that there would be an ultra-packed-collection one day, and looks like waiting paid off.

Even if you discount the 3 Oldboy discs as being worth it, that's still $50 for 5 discs (and it will likely be cheaper online).

Wish the Oldboy transfer was better on the U.S release of the Blu-Ray.

Also, I believe an HK release of Sympathy For Lady Vengeance dropped recently.
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

Still makes the 2nd film MIA anyway.

I'll probably bite on this set. Man, the Fall is proving to be an insane time to buy DVD's.

Not interested due to lack of hi-defness, but a complete "Vengeance" set really should include "CUT".

I already have these on Korean imports. I really don't want to double dip on anything anymore unless I can upgrade to Blu at the same time.

If you're referring to the information in Post 1, it was a press release emailed to me by Tartan reps and is not taken from the website. Their website is at www.palisadestartan.com though.

Seriously, I'm actually pissed at this announcemet. Why waste the awesomness this release on crappy DVD transfers & sounds. I have Old Boy on Blu-Ray & the upgrade is significant, I couldn't disagree more w/ whoever here posted that the Blu-Ray is dissapointing. Is it Pirate of the Carribean? Of coarse not, but it's not suppose to be, the cameras & technique used in this film aren't going to result in the most mind-blowing images. But the colors are crisp & much brighter than the DVDs & the details are FAR superior to the DVD (one of my most watched DVDs so I know) & the Korean 7.1 DTS Master is ridiculous.

Solid Snake 09-29-09 07:05 PM

Re: Park Chan Wook's The Vengeance Trilogy (8 Disc Set) - 11/24/09

I dunno but to not derail the thread....

What's all this about the Fade to B&W version of Lady Vengeance? Which is the original Director's version? Is it just Park Chan-wook's visual reworking or what? If anything it's Lady Vengeance that I really want to see over Mr. Vengeance...just looks more interesting to me. Not to knock on the other film.

EDIT:
Soooo...I looked on Amazon and all they have is this. And it states 6 DVDs. And it also comes out November 24th. Sooooo....yeah. I'm confused. Which is the real deal? The badass sounding 8 Disc set or the not so badass 6 disc w/ some placeholder art I assume?

Re: Park Chan Wook's The Vengeance Trilogy (8 Disc Set) - 11/24/09

^ the fade to B/W was brilliant imo. the subtlety in change is as if you don't even notice and then it ends and your jaw just drops.

i loved this movie more than i ever thought i could. it was just such an amazing piece of cinema and this is after loving and thinking Oldboy couldn't be surpassed, which it wasn't, but this version came pretty damn close and is a lot more fun on certain levels.

haven't seen the all color version to compare, but was planning on it soon.

still the B/W version is cinema and just blew me away, but i am not sure if that was more the content then the color change, but i am sure it had a big part to do with it.

LickTheABCs 09-29-09 07:41 PM

Re: Park Chan Wook's The Vengeance Trilogy (8 Disc Set) - 11/24/09

^ I do think the color change has something to do with my love for Lady. I mean thinking about you wouldn't think it would make that big of a difference, but the way it's used is masterful.

I don't understand this, I'm not arguing I just genuinely don't get it. My post & others contained no "back & forth". This is DVD Talk, this is the DVD discussion forum, & I discussed the upgrade & merits of the DVD to Blu-Ray. There are literally hundreds of posts in the "DVD" forum about the same thing. Is this a new rule? Are all of these posts in every thread now being deleted? Why is a DVD & Blu-Ray comparison not allowed? It's DVD discussion. Only 1 person had an issue with it.

The thread was reported and on first glance I saw a bunch of "hopefully it's on blu" type posts which doesn't really matter IMHO. Then it started to get into comments like:

"Quit cluttering up yet another DVD thread with your pathetic whining!"

and follow ups like

"Wow, looks like someone can't afford to upgrade"

"Mods, please warn me and whatnot after I finish making this statement ... Shut the fuck up. "

Now maybe the person who instigated things w/ the first quote is the cause of the problem, I don't know... I don't recall him being reported before for this type of behavior so I have no basis of comparison[1]. So I removed that post and the posts that were directly related to that. In order to hopefully prevent the blu/non-blu from becoming an issue again I just went ahead and removed the "hopefully it's on blu" posts as well. Perhaps I didn't expressly state the reason good enough but frankly blu/non-blu seemed to be the cause of the problem in this thread so I killed that part of the discussion so it can hopefully get back on track about the release of the DVD itself.

[1] I'll be honest I read only a small portion of the threads here so I'm relying on RTPs to help moderate things. If someone is causing problems don't rely on other people to report it or hope it just goes away, please use the RTP feature. Additionally don't respond "in kind" or in a way that could be seen as instigating things. Just report and move on. W/ that said also keep in mind the discussion in this thread http://forum.dvdtalk.com/forum-feedb...-not-work.html where some times we as mods don't agree w/ the reported posts, and some times we have longer discussions about what to do about a specific issue. So if you don't see feedback that doesn't necessarily mean nothing is happening. I do usually try to either respond to the source of the RTP or at least send an email back explaining why I don't think it is worthy of response, usually ;)

I would like to hope that somebody from the studio sees these threads, and gets the message that there's a market for releasing this same package in Blu. Apart from one over-the-top remark from the "usual suspect" and an uncivil reply, I think the discussion was a good one.

Cause everytime I do I keep getting censored. Why is this?
I want to follow the rules and am not trolling just stating my opinion.
