Re: Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut - 11/3/09
You know, the problem of the movie, for me, ist that whereas in the graphic novel every fragment had some kind of significance or metaphorical meaning towards the dramatics or the themes, both sociall and human, that you were reading, it just doesnt happens in the movie.
The black frighter segment all had something to say about the moments you were just reading; they didnt stop the novel, they expanded it. At least to me. Then, at the end,all finished, it made a point about the themes of the gn as a whole. In the movie, the black frighter secuences have practically nothing to do with what is happening in the movie you are watching; they are secuences of a another story that promises to explian its existence at the end; and so it does. It really mirrors some themes of the story AT THE END.
But meanwhile, its just a short story in pieces getting in the way of the main story, destroing ist flow. Moore knew that the whole and the piece had to work each on its place as aclock work. He succeded in my view (iīm perfectly aware that the black frighter secuences are, also in the graphic nove, like the Squid, one of the most controversial elements even between Watchmen lovers): Snyder didnīt. To me, it just doesnt works. Still, its a very interesting experience.
On other matters, the greatest thing in the ultimate Cut is the interaction of the Two Bernies. THey are great together; they even have some very nice, touching bonding together, even if the kid is ttying to hide it sometimes. Its neat, and that actually enreaches the movie and makes the last scene of them together very significant. In fact, the scene between them just before the last moment hug makes that hug allmost heatbreaking.
PD: Al said and done, rhis is only my fisrt impression. I may need more vievengs. Its recomended for fans of the movie, thats for sure, and really, the two Bernies make it allmost worth it alone.

Black Freighter scenes were weak and I agree with Rammsteinfan that they were quite out of place and disatracting. Anyone else annoyed that they included yet another digital copy disc? I'd much rather prefer the theatrical cut in place of the digital copy which was already included with the previous DC. Kinda like that sweet Blade Runner set.

I think I may have to pass on this. I just have to remind myself that I passed on my other all-time favorite movies with "Extended versions" such as Gladiator. It just seems that the animated sequences are too long. If the animated sequences were short then maybe.
Or I'm waiting for a really positive review of the Ultimate Cut to be convinced to buy it.
They shouldn't have released that Black Freighter DVD by itself so that more people would have bought the Ultimate Cut.

I would buy it as a box-set where you could have the directosr cut and this ultimate version on ultimate discs. Its really worth a look, besides the fact that in the long run it may not work too well.

Isn't Watchmen Ultimate limited? I read somewhere that both the dvd and the Blu-Ray were limited, and both deepdiscount and Amazon.com have SIGNIFICANTLY raised there prices on this title. I read on dvdfile.com that the blu-ray had only 70,000. Can anyone confirm this for sure? Are they numbered? I doubt they are numbered but if there really are these few copies, then this will sell out in time. No doubt.

Amazon.com has raised the price of the Blu-Ray from $32.99 to $39.49.
Deep Discount has raised the price of the Blu-Ray to $48.26.
Walmart.com is SOLD OUT of the Blu-Ray.
Dvdfile.com (which has never been wrong on their reviews that I know of) says that there are only 70,000 Blu-Rays. Anybody know the details on how limited the dvd and Blu-Ray really are?

I'm guessing while the version with motion comic is limited, I am sure Warner's will be releasing an Ultimate Cut only release. So no need to fret about limited number, unless you really want that box.

I wish I could use that coupon that came in my Blu-Ray.
Not being able to get the coupon until December is massively lame.
