To be honest, I'm not a fan of the artwork. If they couldn't use the smiley face, they should have at least went with the Doomsday Clock.

I didn't find the movie to be that great but I do want to see the long cut. Maybe I'll pick this up in a year or two when it's $15.

Re: Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut - 11/3/09
I'm in my thirties, married with children and work in an office. Around the office, either the movie was dismissed as a comic book movie no one had heard of, or known as the one with the dong, or in general was just another movie no one saw. Talking with other parents, its the comic book movie they can't watch with their kids, again because of the blue dick.
I forgot when I posted that this film is based on a highly-regarded comic book that attempted to bring "graphical story telling" to an literary adult level. I meant no offense to people who see it this way, and hope you are thrilled with this new release.

There were a bunch of reasons parents shouldn't take their parents to see Watchmen. The blue dick was a (metaphorical) small one.

You didn't "forget" anything, and although your little joke was probably ignored by 99% of the readers of this thread, don't pretend that you truly hope anybody is "thrilled" with the DVD release.
As for your casual dismissal of the movie...
These "other parents" you mention sound like a bunch of idiots. Saying a movie is a "comic book" movie should have no more meaning than saying a movie is based on a novel. The problem is that most people are too stupid and shallow to look beyond a simple label to understand the meaning (or lack thereof) in the label. "Comic books" run the gamut from Casper the Friendly Ghost to hardcore porn, to adaptations of classic literature, to in-depth autobiographies filled with self-analysis, to self-parody, to blatant commercialization and exploitation.
Anyone who would have taken their child to see this movie if the "blue dong" had been covered up is a fool, considering the mature themes, graphic violence, and language that would be inappropriate for most children. This was not a movie for children, or for people looking for a sequel to Spider-Man (not maligning Spider-Man--I liked it). The blue dong was at least an easy thing for parents to see as a reason to keep their kids away. And the rest of us are grateful for that.

I think I am going to pass on this one as well. Seeing it once in the theaters was more than enough.
Hopefully this new cut will clean up some of the mess that was the film that was shown in theaters.

Ha.
I really did forget. You have to understand, I am a guy who forgets that people are sensitive to jokes about their religion, as I find humour in my own. Considering their thoughts on a favourite movie really did elude me.
As to being thrilled - I am simple enough to think that people who find joy in things are better off than those that don't. For example, if you liked Watchmen, you are richer for it.
As to comics, I am a former fan who became so disillusioned with what the big two are producing that I can't see the depth that you do.
As to the mature themes etc in the movies - all I saw, and all my kids saw, were posters in public spaces with smiley faces and comic book hero and villain types.
Anyways, long story short - you win. Cheers.

Anyone know how is this going to work? I signed up at that website when I got the first dvd. Are they going to email me the coupon? Will it be good anywhere or only at the wbshop?

I think they should dump the digital copy and the motion comics and include all 3 cuts of the film with all the extras and maybe include a digest size copy of the graphic novel. That would be an automatic must-own for me.

Just looked at the fine print regarding the coupon and it says the coupon will be emailed to registered users on December 1, 2009.

I bought the Best Buy exclusive Rorshach packaging for the Watchmen DVD, and there was no mention of a coupon anywhere in it. I don't suppose anyone has a spare one that they don't plan on using?

I don't know. I got the Tales of the Black Freighter from Netflix and really don't see how splicing this in with the director's cut would justify spending the extra money if that is all the difference. Repeated viewings (and I am someone who read the GN and thought it was great) have lead me to conclude that the movie probably shouldn't have been made, as the comic achieves stuff only available in its own medium. I appreciate the movie, but I think it was so obsessed with cramming as much of the comic in as it could that it forgot to be its own creation. The whole purpose of an adaptation is to make something from one medium more palpable to people who aren't familiar with the source material (i.e. make more fans) and I don't feel this movie did that very well.

So is the coupon going to be e-mailed to us earlier since the dvd is coming out before December 1st? Or are they going to make us wait 3 weeks to buy it?

So the only main differences from the DC are they Black Freighter is spliced in, the motion comic is a stand alone disk in the package, Under the Hood is included?
If you haven't bought the movie yet, it seems like it would be worth the 4$ more for the Ultimate over the DC (on Amazon), but I don't know if putting BF in would throw off the rhythm of the movie.
