Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

2009 Total: 80

00's: 13
90's: 13
80's: 28
70's: 13
60's: 2
50's: 1
40's: 3
30's: 2

Oct 1
1. Child's Play
(1988)
Dolls have always creeped me out, way better than what we eventually get in bride and seed.

2. Child's Play 2 (1990)
I think I prefer 2 to the original. There's a nice contrast with this one being bright and colorful and the first one being dark and gritty. The end at the good guy factory is awesome, and I love the score by Graeme Revell.

3. Hellraiser (1987)
This one gets better every time I see it. The effects are great, no cgi here. I was surprised that my girlfriend actually liked it, although she couldn't wait for Frank could get some skin.

Oct 2
4. The Monster Squad (1987)
Great movie, too bad we don't get kids movies like this and the Goonies any more. Only in the 80's.

5. Children of the Corn (1984)
I haven't seen this in years, its not as good as I remembered. I think the remake has potential to be really good. "That's one angry ginger kid"-my girlfriend when seeing Malachai.

Oct 3
6. My Bloody Valentine (1981)
I wasn't a big fan before, but the uncut version is great. The cut scenes make the film better, even if they weren't the same quality. They should do the same with the heavy cut Friday the 13th sequels.

7. Silent Hill (2006)
One of the best movies based on a video game. Take note Resident evil, stick to the source material.

Oct 4
8. Halloween 6: Producer's Cut (1995)
I hope this gets an official release some day, it's better than the theatrical version. I just hate the Thorn storyline, we don't need to know why Myers kills. I'll still take this over Zombies versions.

9. Hostel part II (2007)
Not as good as the first, the girls weren't as interesting and I didn't really care for the whole auctions and how everything works. I did love the two men who go there to kill and their whole storyline.

Oct 5
10. I Spit on your Grave (1978)
Finally saw this, doesn't really live up to the hype. Not that shocking, other than the rape scenes, but I always find those hard to watch. I think it's better than Last House on the Left though. They sure liked to make rape revenge movies in the 70's.

11. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
One of the best zombie movies ever and just hilarious. I love everything about it. The perfect horror comedy.

12. Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
I really liked the story in this one, there's only so many ways you can resurrect Dracula. It could have used more Christoper Lee though, he was still dead till about half way through the movie.

Oct 6
13. Hatchet (2006)
Another movie that didn't live up to the hype. I liked the comedy and the gore effects were awesome, but Victor Crowely looked lame.

14. In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
The last good Carpenter movie. I loved the references to Lovecraft and some truly messed up moments in this one.

15. Halloween 4 (1988)
My favorite Halloween, other than the original. Even though the mask looked bad, Myers is unstoppable.

Oct 7
16. Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Great monster movie with a lot of cool scenes, loved the ending. I liked the sequel a well, bu it's not as good. It's fun going through the movie and finding out what the Creeper really is. I hope they make more.

17. Zombieland (2009)
Wow, amazing movie. The opening credits with Metallica playing was awesome.

18. Dead Men Walk (1943)
This movie took a lot from Dracula but probably had the least convincing vampire I have ever seen. I liked the assistant, but he was just a copy of Renfield.

Oct 8
19. The Brain that Wouldn't Die (1962)
This movie is really dull, should have watched the MST3K version.

20. Dead & Breakfast (2004)
So not the US answer to Shaun of the Dead. I do like some of the songs and the gore.

21. Trick r' Treat (2009)
It's sad this didn't get a theatrical release because this movie is excellent. I like horror anthologies and Trick r' Treat is like Pulp Fiction on Halloween. I hope is sells well and they keep making these.

Oct 9
22. Revolt of the Zombies (1936)
It took a while for it to get going but I liked the story. It's sort of like White Zombie but with out the remember able performances.

23. The Wolf Man (1941)
This is my favorite of the Universal monsters, I think it's better than Dracula and Frankenstein. I love the music and Chaney is great in it.

24. The Blob (1988)
Love this movie, the blob looks amazing, some of the best practical effects ever.

Oct 10
25. The Wicker Man (1973)
Christopher Lee's best performance. I always liked the whole pagan vs christian theme, witch they left out of the horrible remake for some stupid reason.

26. Tales from the Dark Side (1990)
This movie used to scare me when I was a kid. It's not that great, but I like it for nostalgia reasons.

Oct 11
27. Dracula's Daughter (1936)
I guess it's the sequel to Dracula. This one's alright, I didn't really like the Countess.

28. House of Dracula (1945)
This one is fun, but it's kind of ridiculous how the monsters all appear in this movie. I loved the Doctor, there's a great scene with him going nuts and running from the villagers. It's almost worth it to watch just for that scene.

29. Demons (1985)
The music rocks and it's just a lot of fun. There's a lot of unintentional comedy with some of the cheesy dialog.

Oct 12
30. Return of the Living Dead part 3 (1993)
I just watched the uncut version finally, the added gore makes a big difference. I like this one, it's a love story, with zombies.

31. The Omen (1976)
Classic movie with a great score. The remake was pointless, when the original is still scary today.

Oct 13
32. Let the Right One in (2008)
Now that's a vampire movie, no sparkling vampires here. I was really impressed with the acting and everything about it. The US version will probably be too hollywood and not as good.

33. Black Christmas (1974)
Another movie that's still relevant today. More frightening than most movies released these days, and it was made 30 years ago.

34. The Amityville Horror (2005)
One of the few remakes that surpasses the original, it was fun to see Ryan Renolds play a bad guy.

Oct 14
35. The Fly (1986)
Amazing movie by Croneberg. There's a rumor he's going to be doing another remake of the Fly, I don't know how he can top it, maybe he's got a new messed up idea, who knows. My girlfriend was so sad at the end, such a tragic ending.

36. Happy Birthday to Me (1981)
Just got the new DVD with the original score, good stuff. Great twist ending. I love how things are revealed slowly, it's like Ginny getting her memories back.

Oct 15
37. Friday the 13th (2009)
I really liked the remake, it does feel like a Friday movie, more so than the last couple sequels. Could have used a better score though. It was cool to see Jason running again.

38. House of Wax (1953)
The opening scene is great with the fight and the fire and all that. After he gets revenge on the man that caused the fire, the rest doesn't really live up to the starting of the movie I thought. Vincent price was great as always.

Oct 16
39. The Beyond (1981)
Love this, it's Fulci's masterpiece, it took me a couple viewings for it to make sense though.

40. The Birds (1963)
I always thought the pacing was a little too slow, I like the story, but it does take a long time for the birds to start attacking. Once they do though, it's awesome. The diner scene after the crows attack the school children is probably my favorite.

Oct 17
41. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
Scary human Jason, a great cast of teens to get killed. It's the best Friday the 13th, I've probably seen it 100 times.

42. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
The other series about a killer at camp, the first is the best and has one the most shocking twist endings ever.

43. Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008)
They did the Halloween thing here and ignored the sequels. It was decent but it had the same tone as the first. It was great to see some of the original cast return and some of the kills were inventive and better than the last couple Friday the 13th movies.

Oct 18
44. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
This is the best nightmare sequel but Freddy started to be more of a comedian here but it starts a nice little trilogy ending with the lackluster Dream Child.

45. An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Probably one of the first horror comedies, it is hilarious and the effects are great, especially the transition to werewolf part.

Oct 19
46. Body Double (1984)
I like this movie, De Palma's most underrated film. There's a lot of references to hollywood and B-movies and the porn industry as well and a music video in there too and the killer is really over the top.

47. The Frighteners (1996)
I don't remember the theatrical cut but the directors cut felt a bit long. It's still great though and it was cool to see Jeffrey Combs over acting as usual.

48. Event Horizon (1997)
I've always liked this movie, its Paul WS Anderson's best film by far. The spaceship is a character itself and a scary and creepy one.

Oct 20
49. Night of the Demons (1988)
Next on the remake list is Night of the Demons. I doubt they can top the original, it's got great characters and the music is awesome.

50. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Proof that you don't need a lot of gore to have a great horror movie. When Sally jumps out of the window at the end it's like waking from a horrible nightmare.

Oct 21
51. Carrie (1976)
Carrie is probably the best adaptation of a Stephen King book. Sissy Spacek does a great job, you really feel bad for her. Here mother is great too, she's pretty much crazy and fun to watch.

52. Ghostbusters (1984)

53. Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Machines come to life to the music of AC/DC, hell yeah!

Oct 22
54. Evil Dead 2 (1987)

55. The Brood (1979)
Truly horror at its best, the ending is crazy.

Oct 23
56. Zombi 2 (1979)
Where else are you going to watch a zombie fight a shark? Not as good as dawn of the dead, but I love the zombies in this. They look a lot more like rotting corpses that crawled out of the ground.

57. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

58. Saw VI (2009)
I'm one of the few who liked Saw V, it actually made part IV make sense. Part VI though is the best in the series since II. There is a satisfying conclusion to Jigsaws story at the end, they don't need to make any more. But I'm sure we'll be seeing Saw XIV one day.

Oct 24
59. Re-Animator (1985)
Not much to say, I think the movie is perfect.

60. From Beyond (1986)
Doesn't get as much love as Re-animator, it's not as funny or memorable, but Combs is awesome yet again.

Oct 25
61. Braindead (1992)
Some say it's the goriest movie of all time, and rightfully so. Lawnmower scene, that's all I got to say.

62. The Burning (1981)
The atmosphere in this is great, the music and the killer, very menacing. And George Costanza is in it!

63. Wild Card #1: Dexter s2e7: That Night, A Forest Grew
I jut started watching this show last year, I think it's the best show on tv right now.

Oct 26
64. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
This movie is both really bad and really good. Everything that happens is ridiculous, and I love it. STOP IT!

65. Tenebrae (1982)
One of Argento's last great movies. Once again, the cinematography and especially the soundtrack, are amazing.

66. Wild Card #2: Dexter s2e8: Morning Comes

Oct 27
67. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
Freddy's Dead is in no ways a good movie, it's actually pretty terrible. I love watching it though, it makes me laugh.

68. Troll 2 (1990)
Wow, has to be the worst movie I have ever seen! The acting is terrible as well as hilarious. Basically a guide on bad film making.

Oct 28
69. The Changeling (1980)
Very underrated film, rated R despite having no blood or gore. It's atmosphere is what makes it great.

70. Wild Card #3: Dexter s2e9: Resistance is Futile

Oct 29
71. The Faculty (1998)
I've always liked this movie, it's like The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and 90210 mixed all in one.

72. The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971)
Cool movie, probably the inspiration for the Saw films.

Oct 30
73. John Carpenter's Vampires (1998)

74. Corpse Bride (2005)

75. Wild Card #4: Dexter s2e10: There's Something About Harry

Oct 31

76. Wild Card #5: Garfield's Halloween Adventure

77. Candyman (1992)

78. Suspiria (1977)

79. Pet Sematary (1989)

80. Halloween (1978)

2008: 64

2007: 62

2006: 39

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

October 01

1. Bram Stoker's Dracula - More of a love story than a horror movie, Coppola’s loving tribute to the Dracula legacy is a sumptuous visual feast.
2. Carrie - one of the most tragic, heartbreaking and downright cruel climaxes… you so badly want things to turn out well for her… but then again, it’s just not meant to be…

October 02

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge – this is a pretty stupid sequel but I do admit that some of the sfx was pretty cool. Just wish that there was more sex n’ violence to spice up the somewhat lameass acting and story.

Due to some personal reasons I have to pull out of this year’s challenge. I wish good luck to everybody else who’s still in the race and I hope to be back again for the next DVD Talk challenge. Thank you

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Goal: 25 (Ended with 33)
*1st time viewing

October 1:
October 2:

1. Evil Dead- Nothing I can say about this classic that hasn't already been said
2. Deadgirl*- Pretty original and very entertaining
October 3:
3. Scream- Still a fun 'insider's' horror movie
4. Hocus Pocus- Great family movie with a nice Halloween feel
October 4:
5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)- One of the best remakes around, makes the original proud
6. Evil Dead 2- My favorite of the trilogy, perfect blend of horror, comedy and gore
October 5:
7. Army of Darkness- Different from the first two, still funny but more adventure than horror
8. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)- Another good remake, with prettier people
October 6:
9. Saw- The one that started it all, strong acting and an original story
October 7:
October 8:

10. Zombieland*- This is an America version of Shaun of the Dead, both are funny as hell, but I prefer America 'over the top' humor
October 9:
11. Saw II- My favorite of the series, this is where the 'story' of Saw really begins
October 10:
12. Frankenweenie* (WC)- Fun little all ages take on Frankenstein, you can see the genesis of a lot of Burton films in this one
13. Chopping Mall*- Pure 80's cheese, good times and some nice movie references
October 11:
14. It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (WC)- Timeless classic, perfect family Halloween entertainment
15. Fright Night- More 80's horror goodness, I grew up on this funny vampire flick
October 12:
16. Nightmare Before Christmas- A brilliant wonder, like a glimpse into Burton and Elfman's head
17. Fear House*- Cheaply shot, bad acting, poor story... but hey, it's a horror film
October 13:
18. Psycho- The grand daddy of all slasher films, this is a great character study
October 14:
October 15:
October 16:
October 17:

19. Casper- My girls really love this film (I as well), great humor and cool effects along with a fun story
20. Grace*- Not for me, too much of an 'independent movie' feel with unrealistic caricatures
October 18:
21. Midnight Meat Train*- Yes there was blood! This is what you get when you have a good story, talented actors and a stylistic director
October 19:
22. The Stepfather- Classic 80's thriller with a strong, chilling performance from Locke
23. Drag Me to Hell*- This is totally Raimi, scary in the beginning with over the top blood and guts, then turns on the splat-stick
October 20:
24. Jennifer 8- Underrated 90s serial killer thriller. The mood is perfectly creepy and the story and acting are strong
October 21:
October 22:
October 23:

25. Psycho IV*- On par with the other sequels, Norman's mom was a little too hot though
26. Scream 2- Funnier than the first one, with more gore and pop/movie references
October 24:
27. Scooby Doo: the Mystery Begins*- Not that bad for a TV movie, more enjoyable than the first 2 films
28. House on Haunted Hill (1999)- Wild and enjoyable ride with great acting and top notch production value
29. Simpsons Treehouse of Horror X* (WC)- Fairly average for the Simpsons, couple decent laughs
October 25:
30. Pet Sematary- Vintage King, good old-fashioned spooky tale. Only draw back is poor acting by the main character. They should really do a movie about Zelda, she was the creepiest
October 26:
October 27:
October 28:
October 29:
October 30:

31. Urban Legend- I know it's cool not to like 90's movies, but this flick is very entertaining. Good kills, nice premise and strong acting
32. House of 1000 Corpses- Zombie's version of TCM, the more I watch this the I like it. Zombie captures the insanity of the family very nicely with his MTV video style
October 31:
33. Trick r Treat*- Glad I saved this for Halloween. This film had it all, gore, scares, humor, great acting and an over-all spooky feel. Reminds me of Creepshow and the best Tales from the Crypt

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

LIST IS FINALIZED

Goal: 20 (out of town a bit and work commitments made me lower my expectations.) Well, I've reached my goal, I'll shoot for 31 now. Still have some work commitments though.
Total so far: 32
Last year's total: 33
Last year's list
---------------------------------------------------
Legend
DVD
Blu-Ray
Theater
Television
On-Demand
*Denotes 1st time viewing
#Denotes commentary
---------------------------------------------------

October 1
1 - Supernatural ep (2.14) "Born Under a Bad Sign" WILDCARD
2 - Supernatural ep (2.15) "Tall Tales" - WILDCARD

October 2
None
October 3
3 - Shaun of the Dead - Great flick that is still hilarious after several times. The sequence where Shaun goes about his daily business still makes me laugh. 5/5
4
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - Actually the 2nd time I've viewed this one. I appreciated it more the 2nd time because during the 1st I still hated the fact this was remade. Very nice looking picture but still not as good as the original. 3/5
5
- *Zombieland - Great flick. Had me laughing out loud, especially during the cameo. Shaun of the Dead is still the best Zom Com, but this is a close 2nd. 4/5

October 4
6 - Tales from the Darkside: The Movie - Ok anthology film. Hadn't seen it in over 16 years. The cat story was hysterical though with some great gore effects. Look for early roles by Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi. 3/5
October 5
7 - *Fear Itself: Eater - Ok and relatively sanitary short flick. Predictable to a point, the ending was pretty neat. 3/5
8 - Supernatural ep (2.16) "Roadkill" - WILDCARD
October 6
9 - *The Burning -Always wanted to see this one. Hilarious gore effects but the pacing was pretty slow. I don't know how Cropsy was able to balance in that canoe while slashing 5 teens. 3/5
October 7
10 - *Trick or Treat - Pretty good anthology film. A little over-hyped IMO. Loved the dark humour. 4/5
11 - *From Beyond - Holy crap was this flick insane. Crazy gore effects and just weird as all hell. Highly recommended. 4/5

October 11
12 - *My Name is Bruce - Bruce was good, but the rest of it was amateurish. Not my cup of tea. 2/5
13 - *Laid to Rest - Weird flick. I'm not so sure it knew what wanted to be. The gore was good, but not much in the way of actual scares. 2/5
October 12
14 - *Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires - Interesting entry in the Hammer vampire series. It was a little on the boring side, but towards the end it was good. Enjoyed the random gratuitious shirt ripping that exposed some breasts. 2/5
October 13
15 - Freddy VS Jason - This movie is fun even though the acting is pretty much atrocious aside from Englund. Monica Keena's breasts are mesmerizing for some reason. 3/5
October 14
16 - *Night of the Demons - This one was underwhelming. I heard this one talked up over the years and it didn't really do anything for me. Only memorable thing was Linnea Quigley and she wasn't even that great. Demon effects were ok. 2/5
October 15
17 - Supernatural ep (2.21 & 2.22) "All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1 and 2" - WILDCARD
October 16
18 - *Ginger Snaps - Stupid foolscreen version of the film from Netflix. Good low budget werewolf film. Some parts were cheesy, but overall forgiveable. Creepy take on venereal disease. 3/5
October 17
19 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) - A classic. I got to see this on the big screen with Marilyn Burns who did a q/a afterwards. The print was washed out, but it was a good time. The king of uncomforable horror. 5/5
20 - *Vampire Girl VS Frankenstein Girl - Weird ass japanese flick complete with wrist cutters, sexy nurse, Asians in black face and general insanity. I still don't know what the hell I watched but I had a good time. 3/5

October 18
21 - Supernatural ep (3.1) "The Magnificent Seven" - WILDCARD
October 19
None
October 20

October 21
22 - *Coraline - Really trippy and actually creepy. The stop motion animation was fantastic and the voice performances were well done. Loved Keith David as the cat. 4/5

October 25
23 - *Dead Man's Shoes - Frickin' awesome revenge movie. IMDB calls it horror which it really isn't but the main dude does terrorize some thugs. Paddy Considine is a bad ass in this movie. I don't know how this film flew under the radar but do yourself a favor and check this one out. 4/5
October 26
24 - American Werewolf in London - Great werewolf flick. One of my favorite horror films. Great looking in blu-ray and you can actually see what a fantastic job Rick Baker did with the make up on everything. Even David's friend's neck wound was realistic! 5/5
October 27
25 - In the Mouth of Madness - Carpenter is one of my favorite directors, but his 90s output was severely disappointing. There were some good effects work in this film, but it couldn't save the gimmicky aspect of this flick. 3/5
October 28
26 - *Taste the Blood of Dracula - Very weak Hammer dracula film. I was bored with this one and what's with the ugly chicks? Hammer is usually pretty good with the ladies. 1/5
27 - Supernatural S3 EP6 "Red Sky at Morning" Wildcard
October 29
28 - *Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 - This one is much better than the avg score on IMDB. Forgot Viggo was in this. Some great atmosphere and gore in this flick and some humour as well. 3/5
October 30
29 - Friday the 13th (2009) - Decent remake, I don't hold the 1st in highest regard. That chick's boobs are stupendous. 3/5
30 - Prince of Darkness - Classic Carpenter. Dennis Dun's performance is horrible though. This flick is just creepy as all get out. 4/5
October 31
31 - Halloween - My favorite flick of all time. 5/5
32 - Halloween II - The best sequel in the franchise. Still has some decent scares. 4/5

The On Deck Circle
Prince of Darkness
Vampires
Friday the 13th (2009)
30 Days of Night
Army of Darkness
Corpse Bride
Hellraiser

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

* First time viewing

10-1
1. The Hills Run Red DVD* ~ So so horror flick With lots of gore and nudity. The family is vey sick in the head > The family Gives one of the girls to babyface to do the nasty
2. Inside DVD* ~ I enjoyed this one. I like french horror ever since high tension. This has lots of Suspense and a badass chick going after a prego women. Plenty of gore, not for the weak of heart
3. Storm Warning DVD* ~ Started out good and the setting wasn't bad either but then died down
for me. Bunch of sickos sexually abusing a woman and her husband on a little secluded Island

10-2
4. Toolbox Murders DVD ~ I like Tobe Hopper films but felt this didn"t have enough to stand out on its own. It was nice seeing Rob Zombies wife Sherri Moon in for Cameo. ok slasher film , nothing great
5. Stepfather Online burned copy * ~ Before he was John Locke from Lost, he was the stepdad killer. Good to see Mr Locke in different role with hair too haha.
6. Mothers Day Online burned copy * ~ I heard about the remake and wanted to see the original. Another sick at times sexually abuse movie with a disturb family . The mother is so old it should be called Grandmothers Day

10-3
7. The Last Winter DVD * ~ Not even Hellboy ( Ron Perlman ) could save this. I was waiting for something big to happen and it really didn't. The way the crew died was weak you dont really get to see whatever was doing the killing.

10-4
8. Feast 2: Sloopy Seconds Online Copy* ~ I really like the first one so much that I was really looking foward to this one. It still has enough gore and comedy in it that made me like it. Those 2 midgets stole the show
9. Feast 3 : The Happy Finish Online Copy* ~ Good thing I had this right after the ending of the 2nd part. Thought this was like a filler to the series. Also very short. my least fav of the series

10-5
10. Cube Online Streaming * ~ had to watch it with everyone talking highly of it. I lived up to what i was expecting. traps and more traps. Good movie for its time.

10-7
11. Creepshow 3 Online Copy * ~ All 6 stories was decent horror. My favorite story was the guy with the big mouth and teeth

10-8
Fear Itself Marathon *

12. The Circle - This one has to be the best from the series. reminds me alot of evil dead in many ways
13. Chance- Pretty suspenseful .
14. Skin and Bones - Really scary guy and hungry too
15. The Spirit Box - Another good episode. I like the witchcraft story and liked the twist in the end
16. Echoes - Wasn't really into this one. so so
17. Eater - This another good one. loved the fact stuart gordon did this one. that tall creepy man scared me too
18. Spooked - I liked it from the start but didn't like the ending
19. Community - interesting story.

10- 11
20. Carnival of souls DVD * ~ Not bad or not good either. The main evil soul looked creepy

10- 12
21. Trick r' Treat DVD * ~ Probably the best one I enjoyed for the challenge thus far. The stories were good and how they crosspaths. Entertaining.
22. Unhinged DVD * ~ Reminded me of the mothers day movie. Another sicko family with a somewhat twist ending

10-13
23. Drag me to Hell Blu- Ray ~ I enjoyed it in the theaters and enjoyed it again. Its a fun movie. That old hag stole the show

10-15
24. Riding the Bullet DVD * ~ Thought it was going to be good with stephen king and mick garris behind it but it was a stinker.
25. Shaun of the Dead DVD ~ Great zombie comedy. laugh out loud a few times. One funny line was his friend said " We are coming for you barbara"
26. From Beyond DVD ~ Had this on tape and got the DVD. Somewhat outdated but still has its good moments

10-16
27. Repo! The Gentic Opera Blu-Ray ~ I keep enjoying this film everytime I see it. Mostly cause of the soundtrack. There is enough blood and guts to enjoy too.

10-18
28. Wizard Of Gore DVD* ~ The only thing good for me in this one, was that bump eating rats
29. Awake DVD*~ Good story and Jessica had me fooled.

10-20
30. Let the Right One In DVD* ~ Not the exact vampire movie I was looking for but this was a good story. I like the scene almost at the end in the pool.

10-22
31. Paranormal Activity DVD screener* ~ I saw this at home in the dark. This did spoke me out a few times. not scary but entertaining

10-28
32. Wishmaster DVD* ~ Thought this was going to better. the only thing that stood out for was "FULLFILL THE PROPHECY" lol

10-29
33. WishMaster 2 DVD* ~ I enjoyed this one more than the first part.

10-30
34. Wrong Turn 3 DVD
* ~ Nice beginning , put then died down for me

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

1. + The Call of Cthulhu + (2005) (US) (silent) 47 min. Atmospheric adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft story. Inventive use of low-tech methods to create one of the best Lovecraft fan films. A lot of fun.
2. + Masters of Horror: Dreams In The Witch House + (2005) (US) 55 min. Stuart Gordon directs another updated adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story. Disturbing and gory, although far from Gordon's most extreme.
3. + Haxan + (1922) (Denmark/Sweden) (silent) 105 min. A history of witchcraft, beginning with medieval drawings and texts regarding the origins and early practice of witchcraft, continuing with a reenactment of the process of a medieval witch trial, and concluding with a modern psychiatric interpretation of the hysteria of the witch trials. The movie attempts a scientific approach, but also gives enough attention to the sensational aspects of the subject to keep it interesting.
4. + Igor + (2008) (US) 86 min. Amusing animated tale of a hunchback assistant to a mad scientist who aspires to transcend his lot in life and become a mad scientist himself, and the not so monstrous monster that he creates.
5. + The Black Pit of Dr. M + (1959) (Mexico) 81 min. Doctor attempts to solve the mystery of what happens to the soul after death, but finds that things don't go according to plan. Great atmosphere and some surprising twists.
6. + The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms + (1953) (US) 79 min. An early Ray Harryhausen effort. Competent action and acting, excellent stop motion animation as always, and an interesting finale at the roller coaster at Coney Island.
7. + Masters of Horror: The Black Cat + (2007) (US) 58 min. Stuart Gordon's take on Poe's story. Events in Poe's life parallel the story that he will write. It seems too violent and gory at first, but in the end is true to Poe's themes of dark obsessions and psychological horror.
8. + Eyes Without a Face + (1960) (France) 90 min. Doctor goes way too far in attempting to repair injuries to his daughter that he caused in an auto accident. Her passivity in accepting his crimes through most of the film isn't addressed directly, but is something to think about. A great film which anticipates recent medical advances.
9. + Tales From The Crypt: Operation Friendship + (1994) (US) 24 min. Typical "Tales From The Crypt" story of a computer geek battling to keep imaginary friend under control as he begins a relationship with a new girlfriend. Not one of their gory efforts.
10. + Tales From The Crypt: Whirlpool + (1994) (US) 21 min. Typical "Tales From The Crypt" story of EC Comics writer whose story doesn't meet her editor's expectations. Comics Rita Rudner and Richard Lewis play their arch-typical noir roles fairly straight. Not gory.
11. The Last House on the Left (1972) (US) 84 min. Not as gory as it is reputed to be, but genuinely disturbing. Realistic portrayals of the criminals, but undercut by comic portrayal of the police.
12. + The Witch's Mirror + (1962) (Mexico) 75 min. Assembles parts from earlier horror sources, including Haxan, Eyes Without a Face, The Body Snatcher, "The Premature Burial" and The Hands of Orlac into a creepy whole. Interesting, somewhat sympathetic portrayal of a husband who commits a cold-blooded crime when he first appears in the movie, but later becomes obsessed with restoring his wife's beauty.
13. + The Curse of the Crying Woman + (Mexico) (1963) 80 min. Movie uses Mexican folk tale in story of witch trying to revive evil ancestor to increase her own power. It seems less "Mexican" than many other Mexican horror films of its era, more like a movie that could have been made anywhere, but still ably captures the Gothic atmosphere.
14. Dracula (1931) (US) 75 min. Bela Lugosi could not be more perfect in his greatest role. He radiates power and arrogance. Probably the greatest performance of Dwight Frye's career, taking Renfield from proper businessman to raving madman. Captures the essence of Bram Stoker's story, although in a different fashion than Murnau's Nosferatu.
15. Frankenstein (1931) (US) 70 min. Colin Clive embodies Frankenstein's obsession, and Karloff beautifully conveys the monster's innocence, confusion, fear and rage without a word. A perfect model of the classic horror film.
16. The Old Dark House (1932) (US) 72 min. Travelers are stranded by a storm in the Welsh mountains in the mansion of a strange family.Literate script and outstanding cast including Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton and Raymond Massey. Mystery, madness and mayhem.
17. The Hills Have Eyes (1977) (US) 90 min. Wes Craven again explored the theme of a normal family versus outcasts, as in The Last House On the Left. The cannibal clan in this movie are surprisingly sympathetic, and the family that they attack begin as a bickering, foolish group.Craven establishes a model that many filmmakers would follow.
18. + Flesh For Frankenstein + (1973) (US/Italy/France) 95 min. Starts slowly and predictably as the slutty Baroness (Monique van Vooren) decides she needs the personal services of a farm laborer (Joe Dallesandro), while the Baron devotes himself to his experiments. The creepy children mirror their perverse parents. But when the Baron celebrates his success in creating the female monster in a carnal fashion, Udo Kier's acting shifts from subdued to over the top, and the movie benefits. Abundant nudity, perverse sexuality and rather cartoonish gore make this one not for the squeamish.
19. + Blood For Dracula + (Italy/France) (1974) 103 min. Udo Kier's Dracula is sick and tired, a relic from a past age. He needs the blood of a virgin, and his faithful servant assures him that he will have no difficulty finding plenty in devoutly Catholic Italy. Unfortunately for the Count, he's wrong- but fortunately for the audience. Paul Morrissey seems to always describe his films as comedies, and this truly is- with abundant nudity, perverse sexuality and rather cartoonish gore. If you want to watch a movie like this, this is the one to watch. Great comic performances from Kier and from Arno Juerging as the servant.
20. + The Gardener (Seeds of Evil) + (1975) (US) 86 min. Starts promisingly with a vivid death, slows into a dull portrait of the idle rich for most of the next hour, and rushes into efforts to figure out and confront the threat in the finale. Interesting idea of a menacing gardener who might be some kind of nature spirit is lost by filmmakers that don't understand the need to keep the story flowing in the right direction and to set up the climax.
21. + Dracula + (1931) (US) 104 min. Spanish language version filmed at the same time as the better known English language version. The same sets and basically the same script are used. This version is very well made and explains some plot points better, but the performances of Dracula and Renfield can't match Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye, and Tod Browning has the edge over George Melford in creating a creepy, dangerous world.
22. Freaks (1932) (US) 62 min. Considered Tod Browning's most personal film. Presents amazing group of circus freaks as people leading remarkably ordinary lives, but ready to go to any extreme to protect one of their own. A unique classic.
23. + Blood Bath + (US) (1976) 83 min. Anthology film that isn't scary or gory, has twist endings that aren't too suprising, and is only occasionally funny.
24. + Varan The Unbelievable + (Japan) (1962) 87 min. Typical Toho giant monster movie. Varan is disturbed in a remote lake, attacks Tokyo after it's finished with the local village. Excellent monster design.
25. + Near Dark + (1987) (US) 94 min. Vampire family roaming the Southwest adds ambivalent new member. Intriguing modern vampire tale. Lance Henriksen, Jenny Wright and Bill Paxton are excellent.
26. The Lost Boys (1987) (US) 97 min. About as bad as I remembered it from the 1980s. Could have used more of Kiefer Sutherland and the Frog brothers.
27. + Dracula's Daughter + (1936) (US) 71 min. Van Helsing faces murder charges after he is found with the bodies of Dracula and Renfield. Gloria Holden is a seductive, troubled and mysterious countess seeking the help of Otto Kruger's psychiatrist, who is also trying to clear Van Helsing. Irving Pichel is interestingly odd as sinister servant Sandor. Interesting but not as intense as Dracula.
28. Son of Dracula (1943) (US) 80 min. Count Alucard invited by southern belle to family plantation and people start dying. Plays like film noir, with a femme fatale playing a dangerous new suitor and an old beau against each other. Lon Chaney Jr.doesn't have a lot of screen time, but is commanding and menacing.
29. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) (US) 76 min. Great animation and songs. Fun horror for the family.
30. + Aswang + (1994) (US) 82 min. Monster from Filipino folklore transplanted to rural Wisconsin. Good acting, especially Norman Moses as tightly wound son, and some shocking scenes, but undercut by low-budget special effects. Fun seeing a monster from my wife's homeland used in an American film.
31. + Hammer House of Horror: Witching Time + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Film composer, pushed to the edge by overwork and an unfaithful wife, encounters 17th century witch, but no one believes him. Patricia Quinn is a very sexy witch.
32. + Hammer House of Horror: The Thirteenth Reunion + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Predictable, although the origin of the group behind the events the reporter is investigating was a surprise. Not the best, but still worth watching.
33. + Hammer House of Horror: Rude Awakening + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Excellent performance by Denholm Elliott as real estate broker having difficulty distinguishing between his nightmares and his real life. Lucy Gutteridge is very good as his sexy secretary. Walter Mitty in a black comedy.
34. + Hammer House of Horror: Growing Pains + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Couple adopts polite, well-mannered boy after their son's death. Strange things begin to happen which seem connected to their new son, which also seem to touch upon the circumstances of their son's death. Eerie and unpredictable to the end.
35. + Hammer House of Horror: The House That Bled To Death + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Family moves into house where gruesome murder occurred and strange things begin to happen. Clever twists and unsettling moments.
36. + Hammer House of Horror: Charlie Boy + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Heir comes to regret keeping African fetish. Predictable but done well, with spectacularly hideous statue.
37. + Dust Devil + (1992) (Namibia/South Africa) 108 min. Drifter at the end of the Namibian war of independence preys on the lost and faithless. Unusual supernatural serial killer story with beautiful images.
38. + Dead of Night: A Darkness at Blaisedon + (1969) (US) 52 min. Dan Curtis story of paranormal investigator asked by an heiress to check out a haunted house. Unsuccessful TV pilot is reminiscent of Dark Shadows.
39. +Dead of Night + (1977) (US) 73 min. Dan Curtis/Richard Matheson horror anthology. Story of an old car and time travel is not intended to be frightening; vampire story with Patrick Macnee has a clever twist; "Bobby" is a scary variation on "The Monkey's Paw." If you liked Trilogy of Terror, you should enjoy this.
40. + Waxworks + (1924) (Germany) (silent) 83 min. Writer creates stories of sinister characters to promote carnival wax figures exhibit. "Harun-al-Raschid" is an amusing Arabian Nights adventure; "Ivan the Terrible" is a story of madness, cruelty and poetic justice; "Spring-Heeled Jack" is an expressionist nightmare. Little-known but effective expressionist horror film.
41. + The Flesh and the Fiends + (1960) (UK) 94 min. Fairly faithful telling of the story of Burke and Hare and Dr. Knox. Pushes the violence and sex as far as censorship of the time would allow. Strong performances by George Rose as Burke, Peter Cushing as Dr. Knox, Billie Whitelaw as a prostitute and a movie stealing performance by Donald Pleasence as Hare.
42. + The Bat + (1926) (US) (silent) 86 min. Early old dark house movie is more mystery story than horror. Love the Bat's costume.
43. +Annabel Lee + (US) (2001) 20 min. Excellent stop-motion animation based on Poe's poem, focusing on themes of death and decay. Captures Poe's world of dreams and madness.
44. + The Tell-Tale Heart + (2003) (Spain) 10 min. Loosely based on Poe's story, but misses the central idea that the madman's downfall is caused by his distorted sense of reality which renders him incapable of hiding his crime. This eliminates the suspense. Paul Naschy plays the madman.
45. + The Raven + (2003) (US) 11 min. Very good adaptation of Poe's poem. The raven and the portrait are good ideas that effectively take the narrative out of the real world and into the world of mystery and imagination.
46. + Hammer House of Horror: The Silent Scream + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Recently released convict can't resist temptation and falls into the hands of sadistic captor. Several good twists at the end, and strong performances by Peter Cushing, Brian Cox and Elaine Donnelly.
47. The Doctor and the Devils (1985) (UK) 93 min. Burke, Hare and Dr. Knox covered in a similar fashion to The Flesh and the Fiends, but more attention to the horror of the life of the urban poor in Edinburgh in the 1820s, and to the medical advances that were assisted by the crimes. Not as romantic or as cruel as its predecessor, but it has its moments.
48. + Hammer House of Horror: Children of the Full Moon + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Where do little werewolves come from? Stranded couple meet eerie children and friendly, frighteningly strange adults in the forest. No surprises but a few good shocks.
49. + Hammer House of Horror: Carpathian Eagle + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Police detective investigates serial killings which recall the crimes of an Eastern European countess centuries before. Anthony Valentine and Suzanne Danielle are very good as the detective and a writer. The ending is character revelation rather than an attempt to shock.
50. + Hammer House of Horror: Guardian of the Abyss + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Antique dealer attempts to rescue a beautiful young woman from sacrifice by a satanic cult. Predictable, but Rosalyn Landor is luminous as always.
51. + Nang Nak + (1999) (Thailand) 101 min. Folk tale of eternal devotion of husband and wife. Thai ghost story is slow getting started, but gets kind of crazy once the supernatural events start. The acting is generally wooden, but the actors and scenery are beautiful.
52. + Hammer House of Horror: Visitor From the Grave + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Predictable story about mentally unstable woman who kills and is unbalanced by the aftermath. Worth watching, but one of the weakest stories in the series.
53. + Beauty of the Haunted House + (1998) (Hong Kong) 88 min. Mixes softcore sex comedy, a ghost story and anti-Japanese jingoism. Horror aspects of the movie follow the conventions of the Hong Kong ghost film, which has been done better many times before.
54. + The Living Corpse + (Pakistan) (1967) 103 min. Pakistani version of Dracula. Dance and song interludes surprisingly don't detract from the story and sometimes advance it. Fairly tame telling of the classic story with some unusual variations.
55. + Hammer House of Horror: The Two Faces of Evil + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Wife uncertain of reality after car crash. Unsettling story is more like Twilight Zone than Hammer.
56. + Hammer House of Horror: The Mark of Satan + (1980) (UK) 52 min. Strange story works because we see everything from point of view of the protagonist. His obsessions seem crazy, but what if he's right?
57. + The Visitant + (US) (1981) 20 min. Visit to son's grave becomes surrealist nightmare.
58. + That Little Monster + (US) (1994) 56 min. Grotesque story of babysitter and strange baby. A trip to the Twilight Zone, with opening tribute to Universal's Frankenstein and closing Bob Hope cameo.

All films watched in original language.
+ Title + = First time viewing.

Completed.

Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

Popping my cherry in this thing. Having two jobs and drinking beer all the time will make it tough to do 100, so I'm shooting for 31.

01. Masters of Horror: Deer Woman (2005, John Landis) - Not scary and pretty silly, but fun to watch. Other than Brian Benben, could've used some better acting. (B-)
02. The Curse of the Cat People (1944, Gunther Von Fritsch/Robert Wise) - Not really a sequel or a horror film, but beautifully shot, atmospheric and creepy. (B+)
03. Zombieland (2009, Ruben Fleischer) - Entertaining as hell except for some emo-ish character development that makes the middle of the film drag. (B)
04. Blacula (1972, William Crain) - Most memorable scene in this has nothing to do with horror and everything to do with dancing. (B-)
05. Swamp Thing (1982, Wes Craven) - Saw this in the theater when I was 12 and loved it. Only thing that holds up 25+ years later is Adrienne Barbeau's chest. (C)
06. Deadgirl (2008, Marcel Sarmiento/Gadi Harel) - I guess it's worth watching to see how you react to it. It's trying to say something, but I'm not sure if the directors know exactly what it is. Maybe it's as simple as teenage outcasts will do anything to get laid. Fuck if I know. I hope Jenny Spain (actress who played deadgirl) got paid a lot since she spent almost the entire movie naked and bound. (C+)
07. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974, Tobe Hooper) - Hadn't seen it in years and thought maybe it wouldn't make my skin crawl like it did when I was younger. Wrong...from the time the hitchhiker gets in the van on, it got to me again. (B+)
08. The Howling (1981, Joe Dante) - I'd heard what a classic this was, but it didn't do much for me. Some decent humor and interesting makeup/special effects, but overall pretty meh. (C+)
09. Infection (2004, Masayuki Ochiai) - Japanese hospital infection horror has its moments, but really falls apart at the end. (C+)
10. Black Moon (1934, Roy William Neill) - Other than a few cool moments of creepy suspense and getting to watch Fay Wray for an hour, this is a dull take on voodoo horror. (C+)
11. House on Haunted Hill (1959, William Castle) - Cheesy, gimmicky (like all Castle films) fun. (B-)
12. Murders in the Zoo (1933, A. Edward Sutherland) - Not a great film, but worth seeing for it's pre-code weirdness and Lionel Atwill's creepy performance as the bad guy. Scene where they let the animals loose and lions attack a cheetah is disturbing. (B-)
13. Scream Blacula Scream (1973, Bob Kelljan) - I like both Blacula films more than I should. Maybe it's the mix of blaxploitation and horror or William Marshall playing it straight in the midst of all the laughable shit going on around him. One disappointing thing about the sequel is that Pam Grier adds nothing to it. (B-)
14. The Prowler (1981, Joseph Zito) - Some great gory kills thanks to Tom Savini's effects, but the story is by-the-numbers and the killer was telegraphed about 15 minutes in. (C+)
15. Matango (1963, Ishiro Honda) - The drama of seven people trapped on a deserted island with dwindling food supplies works well. The horror angle of eating mushrooms and turning into fungus creatures...not so much. (B-)
16. The Beyond (1981, Lucio Fulci) - My first Fulci. Crucifixions, eyeball-gouging, flesh-eating spiders, demonic German Shepherds. Crazy, crazy shit. (B-)
17. Left Bank (2008, Pieter Van Hees) - Creepy, suspenseful Belgian film with good acting and great cinematography. Not sure about that ending, though. Thanks to Kimberly at Cinebeats, without her review I wouldn't have known about this one. (B)
18. Drag Me To Hell (2009, Sam Raimi) - Fun at times, but I couldn't get past the ridiculousness and just enjoy the ride. Probably should've seen it with a big crowd in the theater. Also...the Mac guy is annoying. (C+)
19. The Hills Have Eyes (1977, Wes Craven) - Grim and gritty but didn't get under my skin the way I'd heard it would. Features one of the best canine performances in cinema history by the german shepherd that plays Beast. (B-)
20. The Exorcist (1973, William Friedkin) - I'm not a Catholic-raised teenager anymore, but this one still holds up 20+ years after my first viewing. This time around, I'm able to see how good a film it is and not just be crapping my pants at what I'm seeing. (B+)
21. Strange Behavior (1981, Michael Laughlin) - Mixes mad scientist with slasher and gets so-so results. Watchable, but nothing special. (C+)
22. Just Before Dawn (1981, Jeff Lieberman) - Inbred hillbilly slasher film works way better than it has a right to. (B)
