Did Paramount Change Their Mind About "Dance Flick"?

I read that Paramount was going to experiment with the film "Dance Flick" by releasing it several weeks in advance on Blu-ray.

It looks like they scrapped that idea and released the DVD simultaniously.

Is Disney still delaying their Snow White DVD release?

Where did you see the DVD at?

I believe the DVD is available for rental only. Amazon.com still has an October 6th release date.

Ah, I see, it was available only as a rental, not for sale. The Blu-ray is available as a rental & sale.

I thought the DVD was not available at all. I imagine this will probably lead to an increase in illegal acts that I can't mention. Oh well, it's an experiment on a forgettable title I suppose.

no one is complaining about this title :)
i guess in this case no one would even notice or care if its neither released
on blu or dvd :)
image the outcry if they did this with a major title like transformers 2 :)

Yeah, I don't really get their marketing strategy here.

The point is to get people to switch to Blu-ray so they get the film before it arrives on DVD. I get that.

But let's face it. No one is going to be inspired enough to plunk down $200+ on a Blu-ray player they hadn't intended on buying so they can indulge in the priviledge of purchasing a shitty movie like "Dance Flick" before the DVD owners.

I guess they're working up the courage to test this idea on something like Transformers 2 or Star Trek etc.

It's actually done to improve Blu-rays revenue week to week to show that the format is 'growing'.

What's the actual price that rental outlets are paying for this DVD? I looked for it on Amazon and it wasn't there at all; when rental-priced VHS tapes were out Amazon usually still had those for those who wanted to pay for them.

Although I'm hearing that Warner is releasing "Harry Potter 6" on Blu the friday before the SD... just a rumor at this point.

That Amazon listing is for the retail version which comes out October 6th (sooner than I thought, but I'm still opposed to any rental window). It's supposed to include both the theatrical and unrated versions. The disc out now just has the theatrical version, a few trailers and a "Stay in School" PSA- I rented it for free from Redbox and just as a matter of principle committed that illegal act that we can't mention (and don't scold me too harshly- it's only because it's a rental-only disc, and if I end up loving the movie I'll go buy the Blu-Ray). It's just a single-layer disc too. Where did Redbox and the other places get these discs, and how much did they pay for them- is it any more than what they've been paying for other titles? (If it is costing more, I'd hope some stores would just boycott the title.) If I wanted to buy this exact edition today, who would I have to call and what would it cost me?

I'd be a lot more angry about this if the Blu-Ray weren't available (I got a player for Christmas but still saving up for an HDTV)- it doesn't even matter what movie it is, I usually like spoofs, haven't watched this one yet but that's beside the point- the market must NEVER reach a point where movies are only available for rental, or priced at $100 like VHS tapes were. They had threatened to do this with DVD since it came out but this is the first time it's actually happened. If they'd done it during the format's early years we would've still had the option to buy the laserdisc for around $35 instead, if they'd done it after laserdisc was no more but before Blu-Ray was introduced, then we just would've been screwed.

One potential downside for rentailers is their cost to purchase the Sept. 8 DVD carries about a $4 premium over typical standard DVD orders. In an additional wrinkle, rentailers say that in order to revenue share the Sept. 8 Dance Flick, they must agree to hold off selling the copies as previously viewed for a substantial amount of time—well after the DVD version rolls out for sale.
