Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

Oh wow, I only have 18 movies in 2007 and didn't participate last year. So much going on, but I will do my best this time. It's hard to find the time to fit all these movies in. I hope to do 1 a day. Saw and Zombieland will be 2, so that's a start.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

^You're probably wondering what the hell that is. Well, it's another optional goodie to go alongside the 31 Days Subset, the 6 Wild Cards and The Checklist. It's there for you indecisive folks who have trouble deciding what to watch on any particular night or just like the idea of genre/theme nights. And hopefully it'll add some more fun to this and conjure up a little discussion as well.

With the exception of 10/4 and 10/31, the themes were matched with their respective days using random.org. Let me know if anything needs to be added or rearranged.

Thanks. I had Quarantine planned already and had been looking for a deal on [Rec]. I went ahead and picked up a used copy of Hatchet too, may as well with the flat rate shipping.

Works out well that vampire night fell on Bela Lugosi's birthday.

The "Theme Night" selection looks good, Chad. That's something that I definetly can play with compared to the specific movie-picks.

I'm not sure if Nightmare Castle falls into the "Supernatural/Haunted House" category or not (if it does, then my post is a "moo" point), but those following the 31 Films Subset could kill two birds with one stone if They're Here! - Supernatural/Haunted House fell on Sat, Oct. 3, where Poltergeist is the "movie of the night."

Nightmare Castle isn't anywhere on the Theme Nights list. I think you were looking at the 31 Films Subset list where it's listed on 10/2.

Nope, there were just three films. Had no idea though that they remade the first film in 2008. Weird

Also do films that fall in the middle of the Exploitation/Horror categories count?

someone correct me if I'm wrong but if IMDB and/or ALLMOVIE have it as horror on the genre it counts.

I haven't read through the rules again this year, but that's how we did it last year. I don't see why that would have been changed for this year. I have a couple of movies on my DVR that I've never watched before and wasn't quite sure if they would be considered horror. IMDB tosses horror in among the listed genres for those movies, so I'm planning on watching those.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

Ooh, I'm liking the theme nights! I have a little pile of Asian horror movies that have accumulated in my collection that I haven't gotten to see that I set aside for an Asian night anyway.

R-Point
Phone
The Maid
The Tomie Collection (I've only watched the first one)
Ringu 2
The Red Shoes (I saw this on demand and it freaked me out so bad I bought the DVD)

I meant that Nightmare Castle was listed on 10/2 in the 31 Films Subset... the same night that you originally had "Supernatural/Haunted House" scheduled for the Theme Night. If Nightmare Castle was about ghosts or haunted houses, it would have fit well with "Supernatural/Haunted House" Theme Night. But I have no idea what it is actually about so I suggested changing "Supernatural/Haunted House" night to Oct 3, the same night as Poltergeist.

Did that make any sense?

Just kidding, I plan to watch it someday. But seriously, go ahead and watch it. You can still fully participate in the discussion and camaraderie all month. You just can't count them, and counting is the least important part of these Challenges.
Even if they don't count because it's a British television anthology series, I'm definitely going to get through the Hammer's House of Horror box that I bought 3 years ago and haven't yet finished.

Do y'all know how hard it's gonna be to NOT watch a horror movie this weekend??? I feel like I'm fasting right before a hotdog eating contest.

I haven't seen any of those so I think some more people should weigh in, but I don't see any reason why they couldn't be included. IMDB shows that each ep is 51 minutes long. I'm assuming each one is a self-contained little film. I think this could fall into the same category as Masters of Horror and Fear Itself, and we've already said those could be counted individually. If the DVDs of Fear Itself are the versions that were aired on TV and not some extended versions, those eps would probably actually be shorter than Hammer House of Horror.

I know! All this talking and thinking about horror films has me craving a scary movie. Instead, I'm going to try to watch some non-horror Netflix stuff and clear more room from my DVR. Just one more week ...

You could watch one of the Criterion horror films this weekend, count it now in that Challenge, then rewatch it with commentary next month and count it and get two (or more) checklist items! Triple dipping!

I think the MOH "episodes" were originally granted a semi exception to the no TV rule because they were intended to be films, but ended up being sort of jury rigged into that TV series by Showtime after the fact. Not sure of the circumstances of the others mentioned.

I only own 4 Criterion releases so I sat that challenge out. In an attempt to stay away from horror yesterday, I watched Rocky Balboa with commentary. Although I'm editing a horror convention commercial right now so that is satisfying most of my horror movie cravings... sort of I might watch Blade Runner tonight.

I feel your pain! I usually watch at least a couple of horror flicks a week but haven't watched any all month (except American Werewolf in London blu ray - I couldn't wait and I needed something to stave off the shakes!).

Count me in, I've done it almost every year. While I'll be happy to surpass the goal and even happier if I make 100, I'll stick to my usual goal of 31, 1 per day.
