26 Paramount value DVDs available 9/15

It took some detective work but I have found a list of Paramount titles with a pre-order date of 9/15. They don't belong in the "price reduction" thread because these have different UPCs from the current DVDs {even though they appear to have the same artwork and all). I'd have posted this in the "DVD Bargains" forum, but this isn't a sale, this is a consistently-priced list of "value DVDs".

Barbarella (1968)
Breakdown (1997)
Bringing Out The Dead (1999)
Bug (1975)
Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)
Conquest Of Space (1954)
Dead Again (1991)
Dead Zone (1983)
Domestic Disturbance (2001)
Don't Look Now (1974)
Eye For An Eye (1996)
Fire In The Sky (1993)
Flashback (1990)
Graveyard Shift (1990)
King Kong (1976)
Let's Scare Jessica To Death (1971)
Murder On The Orient Express (1974)
Orca: The Killer Whale (1977)
Prophecy (1979)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Silver Bullet (1985)
Sliver (1993)
Still Smokin' (1983)
Suspect Zero (2004) Full Frame
Suspect Zero (2004) Widescreen
Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (1990)

To see for your own eyes (the first 26 titles): http://www.cduniverse.com/charts.asp...ortOrder=Price

The price varies from store to store, but within each store every title is uniform in price.

BN.com: $3.99
CD Universe: $4.40
DeepDiscount: $5.99
DVD Planet: $7.09

More store comparisons, represented by this version of Don't Look Now: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q="Don%27t Look Now" DVD&cid=2123419650402147401&sa=title#p

(They're not listed on DVD Price Search)

For some reason, I don't own a copy of Don't Look Now. That'll change.

Another batch of Paramount titles that will be $3.99 at B&N.com. Nice. I probably own most of the titles interesting to me already. Might cave in and finally buy Dead Zone though; haven't seen it since its original theatrical release in 1983!

IMO, Don't Look Now and Rosemary's Baby are essential at that price if you don't already own them. Possibly the two best psychological thrillers ever made and both great movies. Bringing Out the Dead is a steal at that price as well. One of Scorsese's most underpraised movies and deserving of more attention.

I guess I should not hold out much hope for titles like Breakdown (1997) to be anything other than the current non-anamorphic presentation, right?

Indeed. I love that movie, but I also love anamorphic.

I own all of these that I'd want to, though a couple might make it into my collection for $3.99.

There are a couple titles there I've wanted and never picked up. I'll have to search them out in a couple weeks.

I'd go with the R2 from Optimum - it has a superior transfer, commentary track, and featurettes. Here's a comparison.

Re: 26 Paramount value DVDs available 9/15

I'd always hoped that Paramount would jump on the three-film and four-film set train that other studios like Warner and Universal have been using the last few years. Most of the titles in that list would be ideal, and bundled together a la the Warner Four Film Favorites line, they'd take up a lot less shelf space.

The pre-orders or current versions?

I've seen the current DVDs of King Kong (1976) and Captain Kronos at multiple Blockbuster locations previously viewed for $1.99 .

Yeah. I discovered this whole value-DVD pre-order thing when searching B&N for Don't Look Now. According to DeepDiscount & DVD Planet the retail price for these DVDs is $9.99, so B&N's $3.99 is a good deal (they don't list a retail price).

Might cave in and finally buy Dead Zone though; haven't seen it since its original theatrical release in 1983!
Yeah, it's a great film. I don't know whether this will be the special edition with Cronenberg interviews or the original bare-bones release.

Definitely agreed.

What if it was a Rosemary's Baby / Orca double feature?

Two just doesn't cut it any more. Not with titles like these. Warner puts bigger hits than many of these in quite a few of their multi-movie packs.

Here's a 4 Film Favorites: Dead Zone, Graveyard Shift, Silver Bullet, Tales From The Darkside. $10 tops.

Here's another: Dead Again, Breakdown, Eye For An Eye, Flashback

Here's a Triple Feature: Orca, Bug, Prophecy (maybe throw Dark Side in for a 4-pack)

or these three: Domestic Disturbance, Sliver, Suspect Zero

Re: 26 Paramount value DVDs available 9/15

Hmm. I pre-ordered several of these at BN.com and a few days later got an email saying "we are unable to fulfill this part of the order." I'm assuming the issue is more with B&N than these titles. They recently cancelled a couple of book pre-orders too.

But they have made some odd combos, you have to admit. A while ago at Target I found a Planet of the Apes (1968)/Big Trouble In Little China double feature.

But yes, some of the "4 Film Favorites" are good, though I'm more inclined towards these combos when it enables me to replace snappers (not an issue with Paramount). And I like being able to own Dreamcatcher without having "Dreamcatcher" appear on the receipt, haha. Not that I have any visitors, but if I did, less eyebrows would be raised by "4 Film Favorites: Stephen King".
