THE DEAD (John Huston's Final film) 11/3/09
"The film takes place in early twentieth century Dublin at an holiday party held by two sisters. The story focuses our attention on the academic Gabriel Conroy (Donal McCann), and his discovery of his wife Gretta's (Anjelica Huston) memory of a deceased lover."
LIst Price= $14.99
But its from Lions Gate so it wouldn't surprised if they butchered it by making it only fullscreen or something.

Aah, she's a 58 year old woman who doesn't look as if she's had any plastic surgery, she looks fine. I prefer her natural look to the lion-face of Jessica Jange, for example. And the movie was made in 1987, so airbrushed or not, it's based on what she looked like then.

That cover art nearly blinded me.
Read the short story for a world lit class, never got around to the movie. Will check it out accordingly.

imdb lists the aspect ratio as 1.85:1- here's hoping Lionsgate follows through.

Yes, this is an exquisite film. They just don't make them like this any more! We eavesdrop on an upper middle class family in Dublin in the early part of the 20th century. They are hosting an after Christmas dinner for their friends and relatives. Their table talk is just idle chatter but it is so well written that one is engrossed. Away from the dinner table some fine piano playing helps to create an intimate atmosphere as if one were there as one of the guests. Perhaps a bit too perfect for an amateur player, the odd mistake here and there would have added to the magic of this film. No real story but real entertainment and an object lesson for up and coming film makers.

Why did this take so long to get a DVD release?!?!

I love this movie. John Huston throughout the 70's and 80's was a criminally underated filmmaker. Fat City, The Dead, Wise Blood, Under The Volcano. Masterpieces. I think because Huston wasn't a young hotshot auteur in the 70's like every championed American filmmaker was at the time, he was unfairly regarded and seen as a relic of the old Hollywood studio system.

WARNING: I just read a pre-release review of this on DVD Verdict (sorry if I violated any rules). The movie has NO extras, the aspect ratio used on the disc is actually 1.78:1 and the print used on this disc has not only been unrestored, but TEN FULL MINUTES IS MISSING (between minutes 8 and 18). Sorry to rain on your parade, but save your money unless you like your movies butchered.

Lionsgate is becoming one of my least favorite studios...
