B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-In Movie Challenge

Re: B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-In Movie Challenge
Uhm, guess I sort of see your point, but no. We have 9 or more Challenges here, and if stuff crosses over into multiple Challenges and if people want to re-watch things why stop them? You might as well try to tell people that they have to watch unseen films, or that it has to be on DVD.
Good idea on individuals keeping track of future stars though.

There's as much or as little overlap as you want.
Good category suggestion. I've listed several in the earlier posts and always welcome more. I had another one:
Condemned by the Catholic National Legion of Decency. Also, a film by "The Asylum" film studio (Snakes on a Train, etc.)

Re: B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-In Movie Challenge
Those 20/50/100/200 Movie Packs are certainly cheap enough. What if the challenge was just to make it through one of them? One that was determined by a vote?
I tried doing this over the summer on my blog with the Nightmare Worlds 50 pack. Only got about 15 movies in though. With a forum challenge though I might have kept going.

I couldn't see why someone couldn't make that a personal challenge. Part of the fun of this, even more than the Horror, is the variety of what other people choose.

yeah...but there's not many on that list that's on dvd....may have to find an "alternative" way of getting to see a lot of those.
I watched Vol 5 just the other night, so I think I'll start by hunting down those that looked good.

Re: B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-In Movie Challenge
Here's my first draft of a checklist of genres. I also want to come up with another list of studios/releasing, directors/producers, actors. As mentioned, films featured on the 42nd Street Forever collections would be on that checklist. I was also thinking Danny Peary's Cult Movies books might be good, but those were written when even films such as Casablanca were only available through repertory theaters and late night TV so they were actually "cult films". Now, some of those films are too easily available and are of too obviously mainstream to really be what we are looking for here. I just have a hard time considering Wizard of Oz a "cult film", even if it technically was in the pre-VHS days. Obviously, these checklists aren't intended to be completely met, but are good guides for the types of films we are looking for.
Biker Films,
Blaxploitation,
Cannibal films,
Carsploitation
Giallo films,
Mondo films,
Eco-Terror films
Nazisploitation
Rape / Revenge films
Sexploitation
Shocksploitation
Spaghetti Westerns,
Torture Porn
Women in Prison films,
Martial Arts films
Eschploitation (religious end times)
Hixploitation/Moonshiners
Nunsploitation
Stoner Films
Vigilante films
TV Movie Bio-pics
Financial Bombs
Critical Bombs (perhaps some threshold on Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic)
Roadshow Exploitation
Beach movies
Elvis
Films starring Rock Bands (or Rock stars that didn't become legit actors)
Eurospy films (examples?)
depression era criminals
"Foreign" Ripoff films (like Turkish cinema)
Bollywood
"Race" films (early films made specifically for the African-American market pre-1950)
Films Dealing with "race" (especially pre-1965)
MST3K version of a film
Non-MST3K version of a film featured on MST3K
"Before they were famous"
"Condemned" by the Catholic National Legion of Decency
Bad Sequels

I would also suggest anything in these books...
there's some mainstream movies listed, but are connected to this genre by the director usually.

I think the biggest problem to solve first is how to determine which movies are ok and not. I like just going with a rating and vote limit off of imdb along with checking if it's won any awards.

Ooh, looks like we'll have the same support as for the Horror Challenge, and perhaps even prizes. The nature of this challenge lends itself to hyping some sponsors output even more than most other challenges since it's not really a specific genre. If anything, it's a celebration of some studios like Troma, The Asylum, Mill Run, Synapse, Something Weird, etc.

Hi. I was just checking on the interest in a B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-in movie Challenge. This might be one of the most challenging challenges to date. What we are celebrating here is trash cinema. The dreck and dross of films. Flotsam and just plain shit.
date would be April 1-30, 1010, with possible extension through May 1.

Re: B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-In Movie Challenge
You know, originally the thought was more just B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-in Schlock but I honestly can't see why we can't include straight-out Cult Movies. This is what throws away any concept of having some external source as an arbiter of whether a movie would be allowed and not allowed. Some cult movies are highly rated on IMDB for being good examples of their art. Like Death Race 2000. It has 6.1/10 rating with 9,335 votes. Or Rocky Horror Picture Show with 7.1/10 and 38,842 votes. As far as movie selection, this is going to be the most subjective challenge yet. Everyone is going to have his own idea of what constitutes a B-Movie. This is actually what I want. This should really represent your taste, which in some cases will be representative of the opposite of your taste. Some people are probably going to be totally tone deaf as to this genre while others will have no problem. Part of the fun will be to see what others choose for their lists.
Yeah, I think pretty much anything in those Midnight Movies, Cult Classics, Psychotronic, inclusion on the 42nd Street compilations, Something Weird, Troma, most Mill Run collections, etc should count. But they aren't absolute. 2001 a Space Odyssey might be in the Pyschotronic book, but it might be a little high brow for this challenge. I really can't think of anything that would absolutely preclude any movie from inclusion with the exception of Oscars. If a film has won or been nominated for an Oscar in a major category like Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress then it probably is not what we're wanting (I'm not including screenplay, because Oscar has been known to be liberal there). There is an explicit exception for "Race" movies made pre-1965. Imitation of Life, both the original and the remake were both nominated for major Oscars. Both are glurge masterpieces. If someone else can think of other examples like this, then let me know. I'm even thinking stuff like Mildred Pierce-type "women's pictures" from the 40s might be exception worthy. Oscar or not, how could you not include most Joan Crawford weepies?
Yes, that means some lists might be filled with classic B-pictures while another might have Andy Milligan flicks but that's part of the fun. Perhaps an award category could be the "toughest slog" (for the list with the most impressive list of hard to watch titles), "widest breadth of genres" (for someone who hits many different types of films), "Most obsessive in a particular Genre" (for someone who watches an excessive amount of one particular genre), etc.
Anyway, "B" is in the eye of the beholder. If someone comes in the thread and asks if Film "A" would count, we can give our opinion, but if someone puts Film "B" on their list, then there should almost never be a reason to discount it.
