Criterion Film Club

Welcome to the official for the Criterion Film Club! Once a week, we watch a select film from the collection and discuss, much like your typical book club. If you are interested in joining, please visit our sister thread,

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/55...film-club.html

All discussions will take place in the the dvd reviews section of the forum, You do not need to take part every week, but participation, even with a film you're not interested is strongly encouraged. (If everyone loved the film, we wouldn't have much to discuss!) Feel free to leave questions or concerns in this forum, but please keep all thread capping out of the actual review threads. Thanks, and welcome to the club!

Members selceted to pick a film have one week to pick. After that their chance to pick will be forfited

-Griffin

Count me in.

Sounds good, probably will be only good for those of us with Netflix though.

Re: Criterion Film Club

I'm in, although I'd only be participating for the titles I own as I'm not a renter. Sounds like a good idea.

Re: Criterion Film Club

How do you guys think the process of choosing a film should go?

Sessa17 08-08-09 01:47 PM

Re: Criterion Film Club

I'm down, personally I'd love it if the first film was Wages of Fear as I'm gonna watch it this weekend.

How about maybe one fairly recently released Criterion one month, a catalogue title the next.

Or you can go by Director & choose a different director each month (or maybe 2 Criterions a month). My only suggestion is maybe avoid the more mainstream Criterions, who hasn't seen Seventh Samurai or The Rock for instance, probably not much to discuss for those.

Re: Criterion Film Club

I'd be interested in a club. But like others said my participation would obviously be determined by netflix availability haha.

Start with #1.

But what about when we hit films like Hardboiled or Spinal Tap? Would we just talk about the film, since they have different releases now?

sounds cool I'm in if i can afford it

i dont see why not. I'll try to participate.

Re: Criterion Film Club

Between my personal collection and the local libraries I have access to all but about fifty or so Criterions - so I'd enjoy doing something like this.

islandclaws 08-08-09 04:37 PM

Re: Criterion Film Club

Don't start at #1. Make it a random drawing of numbers if anything. I'd prefer the uncertainty of what's to come than to know exactly what film we'll be discussing until the end of time.

Re: Criterion Film Club

someone should start a horror film club as well

Check out your local libraries. Near me each library is part of a much larger network of libraries so what may not be in stock is usually still attainable within a short period of time since they ship titles within the network all the time. I would assume most libraries work like that these days, but I could be wrong.

Great idea! Which forum would it take place in? DVDs, Movies ...?

Re: Criterion Film Club

In.

One suggestion: Separate threads for each item. That way, there won't be a need for spoilers.

Same here.

Re: Criterion Film Club

I thought this thread was saying that Criterion was going to issue "Fight Club" on DVD

jjcool 08-08-09 06:14 PM

Re: Criterion Film Club

I would be up for this. I really hope that you dont exclude any titles just because some people may think they are "too mainstream". Those are the titles that are going to have the most people own them, and hopefully the most people in the discussion.
Definitely should be a separate thread for each title.

Re: Criterion Film Club

Seems like the discussion(s) should be in the Reviews forum, since you'll (I say you, since I seriously doubt I'd participate, no offense intended) essentially be creating a group review.

Maxflier 08-08-09 06:30 PM

Re: Criterion Film Club

Couldn't it be done in the Groups forum? Maybe a group could be made for the Criterion Film Club and then all the threads could be in it's forum?
Then again that may doom it, since I don't think anyone actually uses the groups section of the forum.

Just use the spoiler code. It's no big deal. I once started a Buffy thread with literally over 50 pages of responses, never saw the series before, & not once person spoiled a single thing for me. I just never clicked on the spoiler warnings.

Except that a lot of people participate with threads mainly through email notifications, and spoiler tags don't work in those.
