I'll be disappointed if any film fails to generate at least one heated exchange.

Agreed. Hmm.... this is starting to sound even more fun! I'm excited about this period though as I have plenty of Criterions to see for the first time still.

I'm hoping so, since I'm the one that picked it. I wouldn't want to get things off to a lame start...

So I won't mention
Spoiler:
that you really only got 23.5% off, not 25% (10% off member price, then 15% off of the 90% left).

Or that a couple weeks ago it was really 67-80% percent off depending on MSRP (50% off, than another 5% with membership (10% off 50%) then another $5 with coupon).

Sorry, I'm evil today. But back on topic, I've been in the Criterion mood the last couple weeks and have watched a bunch of really good films.

Before the Rain was amazing, I might pick that if no one else does.

Good call. And sci-fi in July, Metropolitan in December, etc etc

Maybe the OP can kind of guide that or move slots around to accomodate the Challenges here? I can't imagine people complaining about the order of their place in the queue.

Speaking of which, when will we find out where we are in the pecking order?

Re: Criterion Film Club

There is no pecking order. People are detirmined by a random number generator, and then have an asterisk placed by their name so they won't get picked twice.

Ok, let me re-phrase it. When do we find out where our choice is in the picking order?

Re: Criterion Film Club

Is it bad that I've bought so many Criterions lately that I can't remember if I own George Washington or not?

...

Ok, just checked my DVD Profiler and apparently I do own it. Hmm...interesting.

Re: Criterion Film Club

I'm getting antsy I guess, about to watch week one's film, Empire of Passion, right now. Was going to wait until one day before the discussion starts, but what the heck. Love the menu shot.

Decided on thread titles yet? Maybe something like:

"Criterion Film Club Week 1, 8/17/09 - Empire of Passion"

Starting the thread a few days early may give it more exposure and get more people involved.

Ive made my choice. Hopefully everyone enjoys it and is as impressed as me with the film. It was a blind buy and I loved it. I'll wait for gg to list it for 8/21.

Re: Criterion Film Club

Did I dream Criterions or did someone change their selection? I bought some titles in the queue and now one of them is missing.

Re: Criterion Film Club

Just noticed that through the first five weeks we already have two horror films selected, and neither slated for October and the long standing Horror Challenge.

Would it be possible to play with the slots to facilitate the challenges a bit better?

Netflix might even have every Criterion,I'll soon find out.

8/17 Empire of Passion(own,Keeper)
8/24 George Washington(local Library, found it their they day after I requested it from netflix, lol)
9/7 The Ruling Class (netflix, mail or streaming)
9/14 Do the Right Thing(local library)Not Criterion..:-(
9/21 Jigoku(netflix)
9/28 Brakhage: An Anthology(netflix)
