Criterion Film Club

Re: Criterion Film Club
Just some random thoughts/ideas. Feel free to ignore it all.
In theory, if everyone makes their choices, you could have the schedule up months in advance. Say 45 people sign up in your other thread, and make their selections, you could have a 45 week schedule in a post in the master club thread. This will give people plenty of time to plan their purchases, renting, or borrowing.
Start each week's selection thread on Monday, saving plot discussion until the weekend. That thread and discussion on that specific film might last one day, or months.

For those that may be unaware. There is a "join the club" thread here:

I don't know that I would want all the titles lined up in advance like that. To me part of the fun is the anticipation of the reveal for which title is going to be next. I wouldn't mind the OP picking title #1 now though so we know what we are starting with.

The first week is Empire Of Passion (I got picked to choose), and Week 4 is Do The Right Thing.

I'm also in the camp that doesn't like it being a fixed schedule that we know ahead of time what movies we'll be watching. I like the surprise factor, but mainly, for most of us that probably use netflix, I don't like that some people may order a movie that we aren't watching for 2 weeks, & may just keep it for 2 weeks so they can have it in time.

^ there are only two threads, this one and the join thread. That schedule is in post #1 of one of them. Edit to add: here it is. Was on my iphone and in a slow browsing area.
Regardless of what netflix tactics are employed, they only have x number of copies. The more notice we get, the more of us will be able to participate by using libraries or buying copies.
Keeping titles "secret" until a week or even a month beforehand just limits participation. If one really wants to be "surprised" and doesn't have the willpower to not look or cover the list as they read just the top item, perhaps the OP can put the future list in spoiler tags to partially help.

Re: Criterion Film Club
Are we required to participate each week. I joined the club, but I am not sure if I will be able to get my hands on the title each week (since I don't have Netflix) or that I will necessarily have the time each week. I will definitely try my best though, and will participate for sure when I have the title, and when I can.

Haha. What I meant was, would I be kicked out of the club for non-participation? I didn't think Trevor would be showing up to my house with a Anthony Hopkins mask on.

Picked up a copy of Empire of Passion tonight in anticipation of week 1 and the dude that checked me out at Barnes and Noble had to point out that I had JUST missed the 50% off sale

I'm sure they at least used the current 15% coupon.
Good enough to pick as a club choice? I'm planning on picking one of the blu-ray releases when my turn comes, I have way too many unopened blu-rays, including all the Criterions.

For watching in the club, yes, but overall? No. I have watched plenty of Criterion film I have loved, plenty I have liked, and plenty I have disliked. Not that it's necessarily what you were trying to say but as much as I love Criterion films it all comes down to personal taste and not everything will appeal to everyone.
