Same. The good news is that this is worth the upgrade, the original release had a good but not great transfer, but this new version proudly displays the film with lots of detail and a natural, sharp look. Finally, we get a great transfer (it looks so good they must have a Blu-ray planned).

Re: Planes, Trains And Automobiles: Those Aren't Pillows Edition (10/20/2009)
Taken from the review from Digitalbits.com for the previous release:
The new version has taken care of this problem, it is without a doubt the best Planes, Trains, and Automobiles has ever looked on DVD video. Looking forward to droidguy1119 potential review of this disc.
Unfortunately, this isn't the best looking video on DVD. Considering their pristine presentation of another Hughes' hit (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) on disc, Planes is something of a disappointment. The main problem, is that the print the studio used for the transfer isn't of the greatest quality. Color saturation and accuracy is good and the blacks are deep and true. And the film is (at least) presented in anamorphic widescreen. But there's also plenty of irritating print damage (dust, dirt and scratches), along with heavy grain and even some digital compression artifacting. Fine picture detail is also wanting in some scenes, and a little too much edge enhancement was used to compensate for this.

I just picked this up at BB for $9.99. Yes it has a lenticular slipcover and is exactly as you posted with the christmas theme. However the DVD case itself has different artwork which is the one that was found at Target early. I'm actually glad i didn't get this at target early because i would've missed out on the lenticular slipcase. I know not many like these but i think it looks pretty neat.

Same. I couldn't resist, the lenticular slipcover is really cool and this is one of my favorite films ever so I don't mind being out $10 more on it.

For $10, it depends on how much you love the film and/or whether you already own it.

I agree with you that if you own the previous release and are not a fan of the film or a videophile no upgrade is really needed here since the extras are a bit of a letdown. For viewers who have never owned the film on DVD it's the edition to buy for sure.

Bummer, one of the few movies I would actually enjoy seeing some extras and there aren't many to speak of. Maybe the Blu-ray will have some more?

John Hughes movies never have decent extras. I'm not surprised that this one follows suit.

Just watched this today for the very first time believe it or not! Always heard great things about this film. I thought it was hilarious and very much worth the $10.00 I spent on it-

Of the ones he wrote, Home Alone has a pretty packed SE release....
If you are only including the ones he directed, The Breakfast Club has a pretty decent release....it has a commentary track, 50 minute documentary, an additional short featurette, and the trailer....really, all it needs is some deleted scenes and it would be just about as good as it gets IMO....

Are you just talking about just the 8 films he directed, or do you include the ones he wrote too?

Even without it, it's an excellent SE. And even though he requested it be left off the SCE, when Paramount did the I Love the 80's editions, they reprinted the original disc, commentary and all, so it should be fairly easy to get a copy of both DVDs.

Well, somehow this release completely went under my radar. Read the whole thread, it's one of those movies like Beetlejuice that truly deserves an 2-disc SE extras-loaded release. One of my favorite movies of all time (like Beetlejuice) and just a lackluster re-release. I'll pick it up if it is released on BD.

They should have thrown on the "Don't you Forget About Me" documentry about John Hughes.
If I can find it with the lenticular slipcover i'll probably get it.

i honestly remember not liking this film all that much. that was, until i put it in last night and loved it, all of it. see i always remembered the end and how it always choked me up, but didn't think i liked the movie as a whole, but watching it again i was just laughing throughout and is really well done. i even forgot about the running for the cab cameo.
i love rediscovering or giving movies a 2nd chance and enjoying the hell out of them!

I have never seen this movie surprisingly, I love John Candy, Steve Martin and John Hughes. I saw it was $10 up here in Canada too so I will probably pick it up.
Even without significant special features it at least seems like the best edition to own for someone like me who owns no edition.

Not much of a bump, but given this is one of the only "Thanksgiving movies" I thought I'd suggest a viewing given the holiday tomorrow. I have it on now.
