Fucking finally...I've been holding off buying the bare bones DVD for so long. I was actually thinking, "Fuck it...they're never going to do a SE of this I guess..."

an 6K scan of the original VistaVision film elements sounds like Warner's is going the extra mile to make this look spectacular.

Outside of the new transfer for this re-release, which may mean more for the BD release depending on what improvement it can offer, the 2 new docs are the additions.

Re: North By Northwest 50th Anniversary Edition - 11-3-09
The "old" DVD of this has one of the best transfers I've seen for any film and is a nicely packed disc to boot. That they could have just ported it over but are instead putting so much into the new edition speaks very strongly for Warner. This is one of my three favorite films and just might be the release that makes me buy a Blu-ray player (if not, it will certainly be the first disc I pick up when I finally do).
And that cover, paying tribute to the two most famous scenes and the title sequence? Are you kidding me? People are actually doing their jobs here, and are doing them very well!

I'm in love with that cover art! I'll buy and rebuy Hitchcock films every time they produce better packages, so this is a big YES AND THANK YOU from me.

so I messed up and originally posted this in the HD forum - mea culpa. really belongs here. so here you go:
So, anyone care to share their opinion on the new dvd release vs the 2000? I definitely prefer the aspect ratio for the new one (disagreeing with DVD Talk's Miller where he says it's inconsequential) but I must say that I think the colors are a little washed out and find the overall picture to be not as sharp. Check out the beginning when Grant's Thornhill is sitting in the taxi cab with his secretary. The red of the taxi's backseat jumps off the screen in the 2000 version where the new release it's just kind of there. I find this to be consistent throughout the movie. Still love the flick though and worth the upgrade for the extras and cover art.

well that's the thing....that are some reasons to go for the double dip and some to stay away. I'm wondering what others think. IMO if you love the movie (like I do) I say it's worth it. If you're a casual fan and already have the 2000 release then I don't see it as a necessary pick up. But like I already alluded to, I'm really curious what others who have seen both feel.

Well, I've got both and I'm dumping my 2000 version. The difference here is that this version actually looks like it came from film. In particular, a fifty year old film. There's some grain where there should be which makes it feel like I'm actually watching a movie. The 2000 version just looks strange to me. It's sort of the same movie, but so hyper sanitized with digital scrubbing that it doesn't even look like film anymore. Even the color doesn't look real to me. Everything is cranked up to 11. I could definitely see a younger audience preferring the 2000 version. It's more in line with media they're familiar with, very crisp and clean.

I know I like the old dvd of ANIMAL HOUSE with the murky look.
But the 2000 dvd floored me.
So only if there were deleted scenes would I double dip then.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that. I can see the different releases attracting different people. As long as we're all enjoying the same film, it's all good. This is one of those cases where I wouldn't definitively say that one version was hands down better than the other.

Just an FYI the documentary on Cary Grant, "A Class Apart", is not new at all it is actually recycled from Warner's 2 disc SE of "Bringing Up Baby" - great doc though, and from a great Cary Grant film - supposedly Hollywood's first "Screwball" comedy, like a "Theres Something about Mary" from the '30's (and directed by another cinematic master, Howard Hawks)
