Ordered mine from DD too. The balloons are a cool extra indeed

I imagine the DVD is a theatrical edit that had stuff cut out of it to get an R rating, not that the DVD specifically is edited.

Is the quality any better than the previous release? Is the only difference the cover and the soundtrack?

As everyone probably knows, Walmart has been selling the new edition of the film for $5, a week early.

It's part of their new display of $5 Horror Movies for the season.

Grabbed it as a blind buy from Wal-mart this week. I don't know how I missed this one the first time around.

Interestingly - the theatrical edit IS the uncut version. The edits to many special effects were done after the theatrical release. The toned-down R-rated version premiered on pay cable and VHS. The effects haven't been seen since the 1981 theatrical release (of which I'm soooo glad I got to see at least once).
In the UK, this edit did slip into VHS for a bit. There may still be copies around on Ebay but I don't know which version is which.
I remember being disappointed with the edits wondering if I imagined it all when the movie premiered on Showtime in 1982. An article in Fangoria explained the situation.

I love the sticker on the front "Now with the score fans have begged for!"

What are people going to do with their old DVD?
I'm going to keep mine as an alternate cut.

I'd love to give that woman at Columbia-Tristar who said "Sorry... the version with the original score is not available" a piece of my mind!

I sold mine on ebay for $8 shipped. It paid for my new copy

I almost wish I'd waited on buying it, I didn't see the cool balloon promo, I would have gone for that!

Saw this in the $5 bin at Best Buy and was wondering if it is worth buying if I have the original DVD release?

The new DVD release has the original soundtrack to the film, so yes :)

I didn't buy the original release, but from reviews I've read, the transfer differences are minimal.

I wish I had pre-ordered this. The balloons would have been awesome... not that I would have used them, but still awesome. I haven't watched this movie yet but from the few clips I've seen I'm sure I'll like it.
