At the pace we are headed, in a few short years all the challenges will overlap, and after you watch something just put it on the list of all the challenges it applies to.

I had an idea for this years Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge. I was inspired by the bonus week for the Academy Awards Challenge. Thanks to Lisadoris for this idea. What are the with the feelings toward a pre challenge bonus week with the stipulation that it can only contain historical elements?

Is there a particular reason for it like the Academy Awards Challenge had (the nominations)? That's the only reason I'd vote for it.

edit: Or does it follow the historical challenge? If it does, then I'd be fine with it and also suggest an optional weekly theme through the rest of the challenge.

It follows the historical challenge.

Technically, it wasn't Lisa's idea; it was David's and I brought it forward. I can't speak for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy host, but as the Historical Appreciation host, I can tell you that time travel is not eligible for that challenge.

Last year, I think we expanded to allow time travel in the final few hours of the challenge, but they had to take place in a time period that had already occurred (i.e., Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would count because it takes place primarily in 1986, but Star Trek: First Contact would not, because it takes place primarily in 2063). I don't know whether we'll allow such things this year or not, as it was an experiment and to be honest, I don't recall if anyone actually did it.

Save your time travel for the 2016 Leap Day Challenge! ;)

Good idea :)

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

There was one checklist item I contributed that might be similar in idea and can co-exist, but have a more Sci-Fi ironic twist. Films that take place "in the future", but the time period has already passed. Like Death Race 2000, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010 The Year We Make Contact, 2012, 1984, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Space 1999, Lost in Space (TV), The Omega Man, Escape From New York, Transformers the Movie (animated), etc. This year will allow Back to the Future part 2 (even though that's October, it should count) and we are fast approaching Blade Runner in 4 years.

I just realized that the Academy Award Challenge is almost over, and was wondering when the thread for the Action/Adventure Challenge will go up.

Maybe you could do it if Trevor doesn't want to.

I had to search to see who runs it and saw I had this same type of post to you years ago.

Yep, someone else can do it this year. Otherwise, I'll put it up tomorrow or Thursday.

I barely want to run the sci-fi challenge, actually the only reason Im running that is I -have- to.

Actually, after thinking about it, unless someone wants to run it instead, I am cancelling the Sci-Fi Challenge this year, as I no longer want to run it.

I don't think anyone should feel forced to run a challenge. Either someone else will take it on, or we'll go without. I myself think we'd be OK just having a list thread and a discussion thread. Any rulings could be taken up by the community.

shadokitty-I'd be willing to pick up the Sci-fi challenge along with the animation one this year. Those are my favorite two challenges, so I don't mind doing them in a row either.

I'm lucky if I get the discussion threads for my two challenges started a week before the challenges start. I can see starting the October one a month (or more) early since it's an "event," but I don't think it's really necessary with the others. Most people who are going to participate already know the rules, etc. by now.

No problem. I enjoyed hosting last summer and like Dimension X just said, most people know the rules by now. :)

I think the main appeal of seeing the discussion thread get started is just knowing that the host is still willing to run the challenge. :)

The time for getting suggestions to changing people that were in a checklist from the previous year.

Good point.

Do we need a month to update a checklist? If Trevor starts the discussion thread tomorrow, he'll still have over a week to finish it. But I guess it would be nice for the people who are doing the checklist to have it earlier so they can pick out stuff to watch.

Good points. I'm at work and not going to create the thread on my phone, but everyone assume it's exactly the same as last year for now.

Action/Adventure Challenge threads created. Forgot to put 'list' and 'discussion' in thread titles, doh! Will try to correct.

People start doing the jibber jabber when it starts. Bouncing ideas off each other. Other stuff.

We're three days in since the thread started and we're at page 3 already. I think there's always people that jump in early to get excited and plan stuff out.

I've already decided my 'Make Your Own' challenge theme - "any and everything related to nature and animals"
