I planned to start the Action/Adventure/(Crime?/Noir?/Mystery?) thread next week, but feel free to chime in your thoughts on it here, especially on the title.

Dramedy makes sense as an either/or, but I agree it's not really needed with a comedy challenge on the books.

I like the angle of Action/Adventure/Crime. Noir would have a lot of overlap with crime, and mystery seems a little too wide.

I like the idea of Action/Adventure/Crime as well.

Not looking to create more work for Trevor, but it could be useful to list the last host of each challenge in the opening tables.

That's my preference so far.

Good idea. I really do hope to get the tables for all the Challenges done this year.

Thanks, Trevor--we appreciate it!

Someone the other day was talking about the Pink Panther films, and I said to myself "Hmm, I haven't seen those in a while--I wonder if I could fit them into the Crime challenge?" Funny how these have influenced my viewing habits.

So true! 90+% of my DVD watching the past couple of years has been Challenge-influenced.

And thanks for mentioning the Pink Panther films. I've been meaning to break out my big pink boxset for years, thought I'd do it for the Comedy Challenge but was too busy, so thanks for reminding me that they'd fit next month too.

So about the Action/Adventure/Crime Challenge, time for me to throw together a sad thread opening.

Any checklist ideas?

Since you have 3 genres, I imagine it could get pretty large.

Off the top of my head:

Watch a film from each of the following subgenres:
Film Noir
Mystery
Urban cop thriller
Modern Caper/heist
Depression-era crime (Dillinger, Bonnie & Clyde, etc.)
Globe-trotting adventure (Americans overseas)
Treasure hunt adventure
Swashbuckler
Jungle movie (including Tarzan)
Hong Kong crime
Japanese Yakuza
Italian Crime
Conspiracy thriller
Spy/Espionage
Serial Killer

Watch a film by at least five of these directors:
Raoul Walsh
Howard Hawks
John Ford
Anthony Mann
Don Siegel
Robert Aldrich
Sam Fuller
John Sturges
Jean-Pierre Melville
Akira Kurosawa
Kinji Fukasaku
Chang Cheh
Sammo Hung
Takeshi Kitano
John Woo
Walter Hill

Watch a film from at least five of these stars:
Errol Flynn
John Wayne
Humphrey Bogart
Burt Lancaster
Kirk Douglas
Steve McQueen
Charles Bronson
James Coburn
Toshiro Mifune
Clint Eastwood
Chuck Norris
Bruce Lee
Jackie Chan
Sammo Hung
Steven Seagal
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Jason Statham
Bruce Willis

I concentrated on older material because I think the rest of you can fill in the newer stuff.

I'm sorry but an action challenge that doesn't have Arnold or Stallone in the list of actors is simply unacceptable ;)

Those would be your contributions to the checklist.

Hard to find ideas that aren't already a core subgenre of the sci-fi/fantasy or historical challenge (e.g., superhero)

Sword 'n' sandals
Whodunit (or locked-room mystery)
Period war

Heck, yeah! My unwatched pile is so big that I figure I might as well watch something I can get "credit" for. And in an OCD nod, I like having a record of what I watched during that period.

Bank/Armored Car Robbery

I'm the same way--using the challenges as a motivation to watch some of my unwatched DVDs. I also like having the record of things watched...I've been using the monthly unwatched threads for those since I haven't participated in every challenge.

This is what I try to do but if I try doing one of the lists at icheckmovies.com for a challenge, I usually end up getting more movies so I can finish the list. Thankfully I've pretty much stopped trying to finish all the lists, with a few exceptions, and even for those I have what I need to watch. I just need the time/challenge to watch them.

They updated the spaghetti western and exploitation lists, so I'm waiting for the b-movie challenge to finish those two off.

I got into icheckmovies.com for about a day, and quickly realized that it could have sucked away my entire life. I went cold turkey and pray that I never get sucked back in.

Some great ideas on the checklist people! I'm leaning towards making it a fairly small checklist as Challenges go. While I want it to be a bit difficult to complete, and make people broaden their horizons; my overall feeling is that this Challenge should be somewhat light and fluffy.

I'd take out crime if you wanted to make it light. Three genres doesn't make any challenge light. Crime alone adds in another dimension to the challenge. That throws in noir, a bunch of mysteries, and other elements that aren't necessarily action or adventure.

I'd rather have it be a Crime Challenge since I'm working my way through a noir list when I'm not doing challenges but I get the feeling more people would rather have Action/Adventure.

I more meant "light" as to the "rules". Easy numbering, easier checklist than most Challenges, etc (?).

I just made an account at icheckmovies.com and am overwhelmed by all the lists. I might start with the top 250 list being we are in the Academy Award challenge right now.

It's a movie site where you can log every movie you've ever seen. It's similar in that regard to ICheckMovies.com, only you can keep a diary of each viewing (comparable to what many of us do with our various DVD catalog programs). Here's my page if you want to get an idea what it looks like (I'm still adding data to it so it's hardly complete).

Each time you log something, you can give it a different rating. So for instance, I was only so-so on 8 1/2 when I streamed it last February and gave it 3 1/2 stars then. I came back to it in September on Blu-ray, though, and it hit me on a whole new level and now it's a 5-star movie in my book. You can also create lists (like the one I have for this year's Academy Awards Challenge) and other social media interaction features are in the works.

Actually I plan to use the icheckmovies lists to coincide with the challenges. For example, I imagine a lot of the movies on the top 250 list are also eligible for the Academy Award Challenge going on right now, and I spotted a list for Action movies and a list for Adventure movies for your upcoming challenge. Speaking of which, how is the thread coming?
