Rita Hayworth Film Collection from Sony: 11/3/09
The Rita Hayworth Film Collection
A British theatrical troupe continues to perform during the London blitz, in Tonight and Every Night (1945), a sprightly, song-filled drama that features Rita Hayworth as an American singer who falls for an RAF pilot. With Leslie Brooks, Janet Blair; songs include the title tune, "The Boy I Left Behind," "Cry and You Cry Alone." Next, Salome (1953) is a revisionist retelling of the Biblical story, starring Hayworth as the princess who performs the seductive Dance of the Seven Veils in an effort to save the life of John the Baptist. With Judith Anderson, Stewart Granger, and Charles Laughton as Herod. And, Hayworth stars as a bawdy playgirl on a Pacific island after WWII whose encounters with a hypocritical minister (Jose Ferrer) lead to violence, in Miss Sadie Thompson (1953), a musical vers ion of a short story by Somerset Maugham. Songs include "The Heat Is On," "Hear No Evil, Seek No Evil," "Blue Pacific Blues." Also includes Cover Girl and Gilda.

MISS SADIE THOMPSON (1953) was one of a handful of 3-D movies from that brief initital 3-D craze that wasn't an action movie. Most 3-D movies from that period had tomahawks, knives, spears, etc. being thrown at the camera. I've seen this film in 3-D, but I don't remember it well, other than liking Aldo Ray's performance. Charles Bronson is in it, too. It would be nice if they released all these old 3-D movies on DVD in 3-D versions somehow. Other good 3-D movies from that period that weren't action films that I've seen in 3-D are: DIAL M FOR MURDER (Hitchcock), MONEY FROM HOME (Martin & Lewis) and the musical, KISS ME KATE (Cole Porter).

I was able to see both MISS SADIE THOMPSON and I, THE JURY in the original dual projector/polarized 3-D versions at the 2003 and 2006 World 3-D Film Expos. Both times I saw the pair, they were very impressive.
Having seen most of them on the big screen in recent years, the reality is that most of the 50s classics weren't overly gimmicky; nothing like the stereoscopic movies that were made in the 80's, for example.

I watched my tape of FOR ME AND MY GAL (1942), taped off TCM a couple of years ago or so, and was surprised to see that the first hour of COVER GIRL was on the tape also. So I watched it and loved it and then checked my inventory to see if I'd ever taped it before and no I hadn't. So I need to get this DVD. COVER GIRL's a masterpiece and Gene Kelly and Rita are superb in it. (I saw it on the big screen once many years ago. That was the last time I saw it in its entirety.)

I'm getting it as well, but I'm irritated that Sony has apparently once again used an inferior master on a box set for a film that had a superior previous stand-alone release: first The Big Heat in the Noir box, and now Gilda in this box. They're the only company still releasing actual DVDs though, so I guess we should be grateful for that at least. The golden days of 2005 and 2006 seem many miles away now.
