Great news. Haven't had the time to import a copy yet -- now I'm glad I didn't.

Though I don't agree to such a harsh extent, I definitely favored the re-make.

I don't hate ALL remakes just the unnecessary ones.

In fact, 2 of my favorite movies ever are remakes (The Thing and The Fly)..

Great remakes. Others include (imo):

Scarface
The Ring
Ocean's Eleven

There are not many more where the remake is definitely better than the original.

Question for everybody -- Does anyone own the Region 1 Canadian edition of [REC] that was released in January? Just curious if it has any special feature on it? If so, I'm going to go ahead and buy it. Plus, it has better cover art, which isn't a big deal to me, but hey, if it's already out and I can get it several weeks before the US one, might as well:

Can anyone tell me if there are any special features at all or if there is anything bad, like bad subtitles, etc...?

Excellent question. I'd like to know also.

I saw QUARANTINE on dvd a couple of months ago. I have yet to see [REC]. I was very mixed on QUARANTINE. I thought it had some good stuff in it, but the characters kept making really stupid decisions over and over again - all of the lead characters' safety could have been secured if any of them acted smart. I can excuse one or two idiotic characters, but when the entire screenplay is so contived and lazy to make people stupid just to propel the plot, I eventually give up. I did really like the last 20 or so minutes though, once all hell breaks loose and the characters are just trying to escape instead of making any kind of intelligent decisions.

I understand QUARANTINE is a shot-for-shot remake of [REC], but does that mean the dialog and characters in [REC] are as stupid as the ones in QUARANTINE? For example, why do the scientists even come into the building to drill the guy's head when they already know there's an epidemic? What exactly are they gaining except to create some lame horror-film shock set-up shot. Close-up of scientist - then dead-body (Schaech) jumps up and bites him. Duh - saw it coming a million miles ahead and it doesn't even make sense. I hope [REC] is not as dumb and condescending to its audience as in the first hour of QUARANTINE.

I'm willing to buy [REC] as a blind-buy based on its reviews, but if its script and characters are as dumb as in QUARANTINE, maybe I'll netflix instead.

Quarantine actually had a few extra moments in it that were not in [REC], such as the
Spoiler:
beating a zombie in the face with the camera, which miraculously doesn't break the camera...and also that whole dog attack sequence wasn't in [Rec].
I found the characters in [REC] to be much less annoying.

Wait a minute! Quarantine is a "shot by shot" remake of [REC]?!??! Can anyone verify this? If so, I'm not going to bother...

I had no interest in seeing Quarantine. I do want to see [REC], though.

Shame that there's no Blu release in the States to go with it...

Sort of and sort of not. I feel that REC is a far better film. I felt that the camera work in Quarantine went way too much into "shakey cam" mode. Obviously there will be some of that in REC because it's a handheld camera, but in Quarantine I thought it was overdone. I also thought that the characters in Quarantine were quite annoying in some scenes, but not in REC. And lastly, Quarantine adds in a few things, one of which I thought was quite dumb.

I just watched REC, and I found it might tighter, better flowing and more frightening than Quarantine (which I also liked). Of course, it is shorter. Plus with Quarantine, you have the aspect of "hey, there's Deb from Dexter!" wheras I was able to suspend my disbelief far easier and get into the idea that this was "real footage" with REC.

The DVD also has a comically bad English dub, for those not inclined toward subtitles for whatever reason.

I just watched [REC]. Very intense and interesting movie. It was a good decision to keep the movie as short as possible. By the way a sequel is currently in the works.

Nice....makes me want to see the first one. I guess I should. I NEVER wanted to see Quarantine but [Rec] looked a lot cooler.

I think I would have enjoyed REC better if I had seen this 1st before Quarantine. I noticed how strikingly similar these 2 films were. Quarantine was nearly a shot by shot clone of REC.

Re: [REC]---July 14, 2009

I just watched Rec for the first time over the weekend & absolutely loved it, (it helped that watched it with about 12 people all seeing it for the 1st time). A rare movie worthy of the hype, overall I don't think it was that scary, except for the last 10 minutes or so, which was absolutely terrifying. It's such a simple idea, that it's so refreshing seeing a horror film, with no music, give the audience legit scares.

Isn't the horror genre pretty much much controlled by Europe and Asia nowadays?

I guess, I think most of the Asian-horror is absurdly overrated, or just shock for shock-value rather than good film. I will say, I can't think of the last American horror movie I enjoyed as much as Rec.

Re: [REC]---July 14, 2009

Right. I've never seen an Asian Horror film but...for the most part based on the remakes who...sometimes have the the same creators behind it in some way, it is shock based "horror". Closest we got so far to great horror is Drag Me to Hell..which wasn't even true horror it had camp elements in it yeah but...it's part horror.
