Re: How do you organise yours?

Due to lack of shelf space

HD-DVD separate section

DVDs separated in 4 or 5 places and in barely any order other then older titles are downstairs and the newer ones upstairs. When I can get the room I plan to keep HD-DVD/Blu-Ray(hopefully by then) and SD separate but hope to have my DVDs all in one place and alphabetical. I really don't have the collections that you guys have (about 400 total) but I just don't have any of those big DVD racks, only the small ones that hold 50 or so.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Unlike my CD collection--which is well organized by a system I've used for many years--my DVD library is rather looser. TV series all alphabetical. For movies, I have a few special categories (Fantasy, SF, Animated, Martial Arts, Shakespeare, Music etc.) and the rest a mish mash, with no particular order. But I do segregate recently viewed flicks (from last year/year and half) into their own section, leaving the rest "on deck," as it were. Every movie contains a post-it note with dates viewed. TV season boxes have post-its with episodes enumerated and ticked off as viewed.

Re: How do you organise yours?

- alphabetically (majority)
- by several categories that make sense to me (criterion, animation, by collection, by studio, etc)
- box sets and tv
- plus wherever they fit

Re: How do you organise yours?

Alphabetically. I originally was doing by release date but that was getting too hard to memorize.

Re: How do you organise yours?

My system makes sense to me, but most people don't seem to get it.
I've got the limited/super-special editions/oversize sets on the top row of shelves This includes movies (stuff like the Dark Knight batpod, Event Horizon Pod) and TV in limited edition boxes, like Amazon.co.uk's Alias and Buffy sets.
Most TV shows get their own shelves (split into watched and unwatched), and pretty much everything else is split by genre and double stacked, with new and unwatched in front, and older titles at the back, as shelves are deep enough for two rows.
But, because of space, and the inherent problems with splitting things by genre, it gets a little messy - a lot of drama and thrillers are mixed together, and the sci-fi stuff is all over the place.
I have a couple of westerns, for example, but not enough for its own shelf. And romance and musical and a handful of music video titles are mixed in with comedy.
The only clearly defined sections are kids, comedy and horror and superhero stuff, and the latter includes some TV (Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman, Buck Rogers) and animated titles.
Unwatched movies, regardless of genre (but only movies, not TV) have their own shelf.
And there's a section with snappers, regardless of genre and steelbooks have their own shelf too, just like the Star Wars DVD and VHS releases ... oh ... i see why it can seem confusing ...

Re: How do you organise yours?

General: Alphabetical by title, sequels always go after the original (ie Army of Darkness is after Evil Dead 2), box sets go under a series name (ie Rodriquez's Mexico Trilogy set goes under 'M'), box sets of movies not in a series go at the end in alphabetical order by set name (Stanley Kubrick Collection is at the end under 'S' with Vault of Horror set under 'V')
TV: Alphabetical by title, generally chronological by airing
Music: Alphabetical by artist, chronological by release
Stand-up: Same as Music
Kids stuff: Alphabetical by name/banner, chronological by release

Re: How do you organise yours?

I organize by putting all Warner Bros. together. DreamWorks, Universal, Paramount, ect... I don't put them in Alphabetical order because you have to keep on rearranging them. I got so many with so little space, that I had to take them out of the cases and put them into binders. I also try to keep the actors together.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I have 3 "sections", categorized alphabetically like so:

- movies/documentaries: by title
- music/concers: by artist
- tv shows: by show title then season

Re: How do you organise yours?

I settled on movies in alphabetical order, TV seperately in alphabetical order (and seasons) and boxsets also alphabetically seperately.

Unfortunately I had a bit of a spending spree today, so have had to leave lots of gaps for the moment until my new DVD's turn up...

Re: How do you organise yours?

Pretty simple on my organization. Any Tin, or oversized (taller than regualr dvd case) and all my steelbooks are on one shelf. Next couple of shelves is all my TV on DVD. Next shelf down has foreign language films on one side and music vides/films on the other end of the shelf. Bottom shelf has the bond films and the porn.
All the rest, what I call "Movies" is in another shelving unit. Each category is alphabetized, with numbers being spelled out. IE The Abyss is the first movie in my collection, and 2 Fast 2 Furious is under "T".

Re: How do you organise yours?

I have movies in one cabinet and TV shows by the TV. As for organization, I have a mild OCD so I know where everything is placed.

Agreed. Do most people do it this way?

I feel like it's the best way, as many movies use the actual number in the title, and many spell it out. It's too difficult to try to remember how each does it, so I just spell it out for them.

Plus I much prefer something like The Abyss leading off my collection, rather than something like 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I identified with many of the previous posts, but this is the best microcosm:

We only have one tin and one oversized package; the tin (Garth Brooks: The Entertainer) is on the shelf with everything else. I took the DVD package of Schindler's List out of its oversized package, put the DVD set on the shelf and the package fits between two shelving units.

Next couple of shelves is all my TV on DVD.
We only have a handful of TV series, and most of those are in packages comparable to regular DVD releases, so they're also alphabetized with everything else.

Next shelf down has foreign language films on one side and music vides/films on the other end of the shelf.
Have yet to get into foreign language films, and the music stuff (as well as a few stand-up specials) are the things that give me fits. I've tried four different approaches with these. First, I had them grouped together after the movies and TV sets. But I figured since I wasn't segregating out any other sub-set, it bothered me to have those set aside. I have since alphabetized by the title (i.e., Garth Brooks: The Entertainer under E's), by performer last name (i.e., under B's) and by considering the actual text as the DVD title (i.e., under the G's). The last is where it currently stands, but all of these methods bug me.

Bottom shelf has the bond films and the porn.
That should be your signature! I have the Bonds alphabetized with everything else (the four Ultimate Edition boxes under J's for James Bond: The Ultimate Edition, and the singular titles by their names). And the adult stuff is in my nightstand because we have too many young'uns over too often.
All the rest, what I call "Movies" is in another shelving unit. Each category is alphabetized, with numbers being spelled out. IE The Abyss is the first movie in my collection, and 2 Fast 2 Furious is under "T".[/QUOTE]

Re: How do you organise yours?

I hate to post back-to-back like this, but I have yet to figure out the art of quoting from different posts.

I have tried this, but for some reason it just didn't work for me. I think this is because I wasn't sure how to spell out certain things, like The 4400. Strictly speaking, I suppose it would be Four Thousand Four Hundred, but going by the show's pronunciation, it would be Forty Four Hundred. I gave up and currently have the numeric titles preceding the alphabetized ones.

I used to just do some cut and pasting, but now we have the new multi-quote button down there on every post.

But to do things like this, quoting from different parts of the same post, you have to cut and paste (afaik).

Do you have that many DVDs starting with "Four" that this was a problem? Wouldn't a DVD only be "off" by one or two spots at the most, assuming you even have more than a couple titles starting with "four" or whatever?

I find it so much easier, even though I am pretty sure that proper alphabetization dictates numbers come first, in numerical order. But I will now tell people, with your permission hopefully, that the reason I do it my way is because of the whole numeral versus written out word for the number dilemma that you mention. That, i thought, was a very good point.

2 fast 2 furious was the first title that I could think of offhand that started with an actual number. I happen to have that in a custom case with The Fast and The furious under F, but it works as an example just fine. 1900 would work just as well. Under Novecento by the way.

Not me. If the number is in the title I put them in numerical order before the A's. IE 21 Grams, 25th Hour...About Schmidt.

Another thing I forgot in my OP is that I put sequels (or films related to one another) together. Night of the Living Dead is under "N" followed by Dawn of the Dead (original), Dawn of the Dead (remake), Day of the Dead (I always put the remakes after the originals). Another one is House of 1000 Corpses under "H" followed by Devil's Rejects. My aunt thought she found one out of place the other day when she found Boondock Saints in the B's followed by Overnight. There is a method to my madness!

I have that Schindlers list disc as well. I remember taking the dvd case out of the box, but I have no idea what I did with the box. The dvd is in my regualr movie section.

Music dvds in my music section are alphabetical by artist. Band names are under the first letter of the name, IE Barenaked Ladies dvds are under "B". Artists that go by their own name are under the first letter of the artists last name, IE Eric Clapton dvds are filed under "C". Multiple discs by the same artist are then alphabetized by name of the dvd, IE Eric Clapton's 24 nights (T) comes before Eric Clapton's Unplugged (U).

My subsections aren't huge, except for tv on dvd. Maybe a dozen or so discs each in music and foreign. But I like being able to find them all quickly, and see what all I have.

Will try it and see what it looks like. Just have to figure out how to turn the signature on.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Mine is alphabetical for films, unless I have multiple movies from the same director -- in which case I group them together by director.

My TV shows are separated from the rest and are in no particular order. I sorta group show's by their creator or genre, and my HBO sets are all together, but this is an area I haven't figured out yet. My Anime is seperated from everything else. My animation titles are in their own section as well. I group these the same way... creator, studio, etc. but no particular order.

My Blu-ray's/HD DVD's are mixed together (separated from the rest of the stuff I own on DVD) and I keep them alphabetical unless I own multiple films from the same film-maker, it is a film series, or TV series. Otherwise, that's how it's organized.

I have a whole shelf as well with my DVD's that is unwatched films I blind bought for cheap to watch and sort through. The same can be said for my HD's/Blu's. All of my items are double stacked on bookcases for space reasons except for my High Definition titles.

I would really like to re-organize my movies someway.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Yep, those last two posts remind me that I too put some sequels with their originals. It all depends on how closely I think the titles are related. The Raiders films have to go together, for example; Army of Darkness has to be with the Evil Deads, but the "___ of the Dead" films are alphabetical for me, though it slightly bothers me.

I've even taken the extreme step of putting some things in two places. For example, I keep all the Oscar Best Picture winners on one shelf chronologically. My Godfather films are in the trilogy package, so it was "bothersome" having Godfather 3 in the winners shelf, and Godfather 1 & 2 out of order. So I just made extras of G1 & 2, putting them in their proper year slots, and put the trilogy case back down with the Gs. Completely silly and OCD I know, but my mind needs it to be that way.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I have all the catalog titles alphabetically, in two sections: VHS and DVD. (haven't jumped to Blu-ray yet due to costs) Some sequels/prequels are with it's first movie. (i.e. Fast and the Furious, followed by 2-Fast 2-Furious, followed by Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift). And double/triple/quadruple features (that aren't related) are separate with no organization. Same with TV series, organized separately and in no order except complete series (seasons) together.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Currently I go alphabetical by director and then that directors work in chronological order. I make exceptions for some movies that are part of a series (Star Treks, Terminators). The Blu-rays/HD DVDs are in the same unit as the rest of my DVDs but are separated from the regular DVDs. I also have my t.v. shows on DVD in another unit all together. On top of my main shelf I also keep some sets that are sort of big and take up too much space such as my Six Feet Under complete gift set, Alfred Hitchock Signature collection, Evil Dead 2: Book of the Dead, and Reservoir Dogs 15th Anniversary tin. Then finally I have a single shelf of one of my book cases that holds mainly box sets (Indiana Jones trilogy and KOTCS DVDs, Back to the Future trilogy, Ghostbusters 1 & 2 set, Godfather trilogy, Scorsese collection, Star Wars trilogy plus Episode III) as well as all of my Batman DVDs (Adam West movie, the two Burton films, The Animated Series, Mask of the Phantasm, and Batman Begins).

Re: How do you organise yours?

I'm with the majority with alphebetizing mine (for the most part). Slight exceptions are all on the Bond movies I have are with "B", Star Trek is in 'chronological' order under "S", etc.

Also, all my music DVDs aren't with everything else. They're upstairs with the CDs.
