Charles In Charge - Season 4" is coming to DVD *Kinda*

4th Season Available on DVD Exclusively via Amazon's 'CreateSpace' Program

"Charles In Charge - Season 4" is coming to DVD, but not through the traditional manufacturing process. We've got the story about it, plus the studio's press release and cover art, in the TVShowsOnDVD News.
This title will be released on March 24, 2009.

I'm not too thrilled with this. I mean does this mean we won't be getting season 4 any other way and how's the qualilty?

Not a fan of the show, but I hope this isn't something that starts coming more common place. The "on demand" DVDs look like bootlegs, IMHO.

This way of releasing DVDs is a big fuck you to all the show's fans. Why don't they release this in a limited edition Amazon exclusive instead of this DVD-R shit? Or better, why don't they release a complete series and charge $100 bucks for it and consumers actually get a product that looks like the company producing gives a shit?

Honestly, I'd rather see releases like this as opposed to shows being left in limbo eternally.

Because this way it costs the studio barely anything if no one buys it. They don't have a bunch of stock sitting waiting to be sold that cost them money to produce. I personally like the idea, gives a legal way to obtain shows/movies that aren't popular enough to sustain real releases anymore.

What he said. Also, at least this is a decent price. The two Rocko's Modern Life DVD-Rs from Amazon have 6 episodes on one and 7 on the other, and they go for $20-$25 each!

I'm honestly not quite sure why anyone cares. For a large majority of people, you'd never know it was on a DVD-R if they didn't tell you. Who is actually not able to play a DVD-R in their current player?

Actually, if you read the reviews from the DVD-R's on amazon's site, a LOT of people can't play them. Someone even says they won't play on a blu-ray player.

Also says they won't play in computers.

Lame lame lame.

If thats the case, then these discs are pretty close to useless. If it's ma crapshoot whether they will work, why would I want to spend money on them? When I saw that the Dr. Horrible disc at Amazon was a dvd-r, i opted not to get it.

You should have titled this thread Charles In Charge - Season 4" is coming to DVD-R.

If incompatibility wasn't such an issue, this new practice wouldn't bother me, but I don't want to buy something that may or may not work on my DVD or Blu-ray players.

I have no problems with this, I've never had problems with the majority of DVD-Rs I've purchase (probably about as many problems as I have had with factory pressed DVDs). I got the Dr. Horrible disc and it played fine.

I think this is a great way to release some TV series and products that may have a limited fan base.

I have nine DVD players between my stand alones, game consoles, and computer drives. And DVD-Rs play on eight of them. I thought that was the norm. Are there really that many players out there that won't play them?

Yeah, even my first player from 2000 plays DVD-R's. I'd take this over not seeing a show at all.

Re: Charles In Charge - Season 4" is coming to DVD *Kinda*

Cheapo companies. This trend sucks. They're doing it with CD-Rs too. Burnt media doesn't last as long as pressed (or whatever the process really is.). It also cripples the chance of a movie (or album) seeing the light of day on traditional DVD/CD. Now, I got to closely read the listing whenever I order a title from Amazon. I also think the prices suck not that would make much of a difference for me as I won't touch this cheap crap at any price. I spend my money on real media, not something that I can rip and burn at home myself. I fail to see how this can be good in the long run.

Re: Charles In Charge - Season 4" is coming to DVD *Kinda*

I understand your concerns Pizza, but don't totally agree. Number one, for the most part, you can't make this stuff yourself at home. Some shows and episodes might be available in complete form on TV for you to download and make yourself, but I doubt that even the most proficient home user can make home builds as complete and with the quality that Amazon does.

Also, I don't think this cripples the chance of "legit" releases. This stuff simply would never be put out any other way.

Yes, the DVD-R media doesn't last as long. So I recommend backing it up to a hard drive.

Right, but you might not even be able to do that. As it says for Rocko's Modern Life (another DVD-R they sell):
This disc is expected to play back in DVD Video"play only" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.
Sounds like whatever they are making might not be readable by PC drives. How could that be? Unless they are purposely putting on some kind of protection that confuses PC drives.
