According to the back cover, no subtitles on the DVD? bizarre.

I guess they only had room for closed captions?

Well it does feature a 2 hour + movie and over 90 minutes of special features. Guess they couldnt find room for em. Still I cant complain. This is getting a damn decent DVD compared to most of my other favorite films of last year.

A subtitle track usually doesn't take up more than a few megabytes, a fraction of the space on the DVD. Unless the DVD uses the absolute maximum amount of data allowed, which I don't think I've ever heard of, there's always room for plenty of subtitles.

Anyhow, I can confirm this DVD doesn't have English subtitles.

Sony Pictures Classics DVDs rarely have subtitles, unless it is a subtitled film. Yet plain Sony Home Entertainment does.

I don't know why they do this, as a lot of these are upscale productions that might skew to an older audience that needs them. But they never include them.

on the DVD menu there's an option for English subtitle, yet when you click it nothing shows up!

It's an option for "English Special Features Subtitles", for some reason only the special features come with English subtitles. The subtitle track on the main feature only translates the minor French dialogue.

If you want subs for the feature, the blu-ray is the way to go.
