I still remember being kinda pissed off about the image quality on the first two disc LE from Anchor Bay way back when. Whatever forum I was on started making noise about this movie when the the LE was announced, and the SciFi channel happened to be playing the super long cut that weekend, so my wife and I watched it for the first time and then eagerly ordered the DVD hoping to have that cut on disc. Still burns me to this day that not only was it missing footage from the TV cut, but the DVD looked worse in places than the cable TV broadcast did.

I've waited many years for a high-quality, everything-but-the-kitchensink long cut. I can keep on waiting.

The MGM R3 is the one that had the good picture quality. They remastered the picture using film elements, whereas all the Anchor Bay ones clearly sourced the extended sequences from analog tape.

You're too cute. First you will get the Theatrical cut. A year later the Theatrical Cut remastered. A year after the DC Cut. A year later DC and Theatrical. You must be a AoD newbie

Well, thus far Universal hasn't whored out the title the way Anchor Bay did...the same old theatrical disc they're retiring with this release has been on the market since like 1998, so let's hope we finally get something fairly definitive. For xage's sake, at the very least.

They have a pretty recent high-def remaster that was making the rounds on Universal HD and the DVD/HD DVD combo from a couple years back.

Even the DVD side of that combo disc looked worlds removed from the Anchor Bay releases and Universal's own non-anamorphic DVD. The color timing is so drastically different that I'm not sure which is the most accurate.

Yes - I just want a good transfer of the cinema cut. I was hoping that standard-def transfer on the combo would be the basis of this supposed new DVD release but alas it's not to be. I guess I'll have to hunt down the combo disc after all. What a load.

What makes you think they won't be using that transfer?

That's not what I meant - the Screwhead Edition is no longer on release schedule so who knows when the heck it'll come out? Might as well just forget about it.

I assume you're aiming that at Egon's Ghost, but he specifically states he wants the cinema cut, but the R3 has the director's cut.

PQ and extra scenes of Embeth are well worth it.

Re: Army of Darkness: Screwhead Edition!? DVD / BD - May 19, 2009

The R3 is nice! I imported this one when it first came out. I only have 1 region free player though, so I made a copy of it on a dual layer disc. Same quality as the original, but it's NTSC and region free now, so I can play it on all of my players in the house. Great PQ on this one and it's nice to see the extra scenes... though I do like the "S Mart" ending better.

I'd highly recommend buying this release! I also bought the HD combo disc for the flipside dvd! It's the best "standard" version out there.
