Help a teacher find a DVD on Netflix for my class!

I tried over and over but I can't find a decent documentary on life in the Middle Ages that is meant for middle school kids. At this point I'd take one on:

Knights
Castles
Warfare
Life in medeival society

Everything I find is either aims at adults or the reviews say how incredibly boring they are. Is there an advanced sesrch function?

If you have to settle for a "boring" one, maybe you can break up the doc into sections. Stop the DVD, discuss what has been talked about with the class. Maybe have a quick quiz for those who paid attention and give out some sort of prize for a correct answer.

I work in an urban school that prizes nor quizzes motivate many of them. The video HAS to be solid...one we watched last week that they LOVED was that Castle video by David Mcaughly..it was amazing.

i've done the "Engineering an Empire" for Ancient China.

not bad, done with Peter Weller who was very animated to say the least talking about Shi Huang Di and the Great Wall. i wouldn't say it was highly accurate however. there was a lot of conjecture and "could have happened" scenarios.

My advice is to not worry about whether or not they're targeted at middle schoolers. Don't pander to notions of what they're "too young" to handle. Their world is the most violent, sex-crazed world in generations--they can hang with the content. If anything, as long as the imagery is interesting, don't even worry too much if the narration is convoluted; they'll still get the point. Besides, you're there to provide the supplementary commentary you want them to have.

You have to sort of worry about those things if you want to have your job the next day. You have to be very careful what you show them as well as getting administration's approval.

This is so obvious, I thought it went without saying. I was referring to those titles the OP characterized as "aims at adults." That does not necessarily mean "inappropriate."

Well, it seems that most of the things that adolescents find interesting these days are also inappropriate for school. I know because 90% of the things that my students talk to me about wanting to see at school are either things that are a big no up front or would require parental consent from every parent. A fellow teacher of mine was showing an art film and because it had some cursing in it the teacher had to send a letter home to each parent and it had to be signed and returned giving consent for their child to see it. Mind you those were high school students. These days even small things can throw some parents into a tizzy. Some of my fellow English teachers have it out now and then with parents over some required reading because it might mention smoking or something they deem inappropriate.

How about Terry Jones' Medieval Lives?

Haven't watched it yet, but how can you go wrong with a documentary by a Monty Python?

Re: Help a teacher find a DVD on Netflix for my class!

There was a series of documentaries based of David Macauley's Castle (1983) and Cathedral (1986) books that would be great. They aren't on DVD, but may be available from your local library on VHS. Each is about an hour long.

James Burke's Connections is a great series. However, you'd have to preview to determine which episodes are relevant to what your class is studying.

Connections

Connections 2

Connections 3

Try the documentary Scared Straight.

If you want movies, try To Sir With Love, The Ron Clark Story, Music of the Heart

A History of Britain - The Complete Collection

Very well done...and covers the stone age to the 20th century.
